Pre-Game Talk: ECQF Preview: Your New Jersey Devils vs. Carolina Hurricanes - We're Playoff Bound!

Maybe it’s just me and I could be completely wrong, but the 22-23 version of the Canes were scarier to me than this year’s version.

I have the devils taking this in 6.
Definitely a drop off between the 22-23 Canes and this years team, especially defensively, but the drop off between the 22-23 Devils and this years Devils is way worse, in my opinion.

I still think it’s winnable, but I’m not optimistic going in.

The only real path to an unlikely victory is a low event, low scoring series. Issue with that is you need Markstrom and/or Allen to be consistently good and not allow any muffins for that to even work....which is unrealistic based on this season and the prior 2 years of play by both goalies.

Here's to hoping for a miracle though.
This isn’t exactly the 1980 Russian Olympic team we’re playing

There’s a concert on Saturday the 26th, so I’m thinking games 3 and 4 will be on Friday and Sunday, which was already leaked somewhere but maybe that was fake, only because they put it together with the idea that there would be no Saturday game because of the concert?
I didn’t realize that. That likely means a Monday start with Tampa and Florida starting Sunday afternoon.

The tv windows up through what would be game 6 are published on espn, TNT’s and TBS’s website. I was going through this morning giving it my best guess based on how the NHL usually divvys things up. Plus, LAK-EDM have to start Sunday because the Lakers are home Saturday. Also, the following Thursday is the NFL draft so there are only 3 TV windows available that night.

Are there still matchups that don't start until the third day of playoff games?

I don't recall in previous years, though I do remember our series with Florida not starting until day 3 of the playoffs back in 2012.

And If we don't start until day 3 then I'd say it's almost a guarantee that game 1 of the next series will be just 48 hours after game 7 of this series ends, if there is a game 7. Just like in 2023.

I don't see forsee Allen getting a game.

I still think Markstrom is the far superior goalie.
Markstrom is better, but he's had at least two games since he's returned that have probably been worse than any of Allen's games this year.

The Pittsburgh game last month and Boston game last week was like they called up the ghost of 2019 or 2020 Cory Schneider.

I think Markstrom would have to completely shit the bed in like 3 straight games for Allen to get a start. Which isn't impossible, but I don't think Markstrom will be that bad. I think scoring goals is going to be more of an issue than preventing them.

The TNT, TBS, and ESPN Networks schedules shows only 2 games on Saturday, April 19 (both on TNT). There are 4 games on April 20 on ESPN and ESPN2, and 4 games on April 21 on ESPN/2. So it looks like 2 series start Saturday, 4 on Sunday and then last two on Monday.

Right now here are the TV windows per day for the first 4 games of each series:
  • Sat. April 19: 6pm and 9pm TNT
  • Sun. April 20: 12:30, 3PM, 10 PM ESPN, 7pm ESPN2
  • Mon. April 21: 7pm, 7:30pm, 9:30pm, 10pm ESPN/2
  • Tues. April 22: 7pm, 7:30pm, 9:30pm, 10pm ESPN/2
  • Wed. April 23: 7pm and 9:30pm ESPN
  • Thurs. April 24: 7:30pm ESPN2*, 7pm and 10pm TBS
  • Fri. April 25: 7pm, 7:30pm, 9:30pm, 10pm TNT/TBS
  • Sat. April 26: 1pm, 4pm, 7pm, 10pm TBS**
  • Sun. April 27: 12:30pm, 3:00 PM TNT, 7:00PM, 10PM TBS
  • Mon. Aril 28: 8:00pm ESPN

(*- NFL Draft on ESPN that night, **-St. Louis Arena booked 4/25 and 4/26, so one game may be bumped to Sunday for a 5 game slate that day)

After that it is 4 games each night split between ESPN and TBS/TNT. ABC has two windows open on May 3rd for Game 7's that could become Game 1s of round 2.

I'm glad we won't any 8pm home games at least.

Just for the excuse to vent, the NFL Draft used to be one of my favorite events of the year. But ever since they moved it into prime time in 2010, it just hasn't been the same for me. I liked rolling out of bed on a Saturday morning and watching a few hours of the draft.

I had the 2010 Draft recorded as I thought I could get home and catch up. Then the non-sports radio station I had on spoiled the Chargers trading up. In 2012, the first round went up against Devils/Panthers Game 7. Mix in the Chargers bailing for LA and I'm just not as invested. [/firstworldproblems]

Roger Goodell ruining something for the sake of money? Never!

For what it’s worth. Moneypucks playoff model pushed us up to 41% chance to beat Canes.

Devils will also end up only 4/5 games behind Carolina in the standings which is wild considering the awful 2025 results. Carolina is indeed beatable. NJ needs their A game every single shift.

this team plays so poorly and packs it in once things get tough they really need to score first to keep themselves in the game mentally. get a split and ideally it be game 1 they win please!

i will say big IF they win the series the east is so "weak" anything can happen. i think the jackets could play better against the caps so i want them in. but i'm not as worried about the caps or jackets as much as the canes being the devils playoff boogeyman. then you either face bolts/panthers both great teams but tons of playoff miles on those rosters or the leafs in a conference finals? all the pressure is on them and sheldon revenge series.
