Eh, I just disagree. Whatever goaltending, not bad, which is irrelevant when offense at ES and PP produces nothing. Absolutely nothing. Even more concerning considering they were trailing majority of game and still couldn't generate much. When Rangers pushed, they created glorious chances.

Unrelatedly, I want good ol' Lindy to justify sitting Sharangovich vs a top powerplay.
What the hell are you talking about. They had some of the best chances of the game. Tatar had a grade A chance, Haula had a sitter he should have scored, Nico had a couple grade A’s and easily could’ve scored, Jack had a couple grade A’s, Graves hit the post, etc. They had some really good chances and the Rangers obviously did as well.

Saying they didn’t generate any offense is just absurd.

They've been like this the past decade, we've seen it in their prior playoff years/rounds. Give them credit for somehow making it work but the Devils just need to keep it 5v5 and see what happens. Them getting frustrated they aren't scoring is playing into the Rangers's hands because they'll take ill timed penalties like bozo Wood did.
It's actually wild. Devils 60.07% xGF% tonight 5v5 and they weren't even dangerous as we know they can be (even though they got a few looks). We can beat these guys. Just have to stick to our game and put more pucks on net/drive more. You have to try it to beat Igor. Dude is so f***ing good.

That's gonna happen when you're getting pumped though. The team who's down is always more desperate and pushing the pace. Welcome to Hockey. The last 40 mostly 'belonged' to Jersey. First 20, NYR was in complete control.

Anyway, 57/43 NYR on the "Deserve-to-win-O'Meter" if that's your thing.
Expected Goals all situations: NYR 3.6 - NJD 2.7

Game 2 will be completely different one way or another, regardless. Devils have settled in after a 1st period where they were clearly nervous.
No doubt the Rangers deserved to win tonight. They executed their game plan to perfection. Once they got that 2 goal lead they shut it down and kept us to the perimeter and didn't need to attack. We got our chances and Igor made the saves. The Rangers got their chances and capitalized. If this game is going to happen, then let it play out in game 1. If we can't adjust, then we don't deserve to win the series. Scoring the first goal in game 2 will be critical because it completely changes their game plan.

They got into their own heads, the Rags blocked like a good 8-10 shots early on and the Devils decided to overpass to avoid those blocks. As the game went on, if they just shot on some of those looks they probably either score or generate grade A rebounds to bang home. Need Sharangovich in on Thursday for the PK + his shoot first mentality.

This goal drove me nuts.

He moved his head OUT OF THE WAY. That doesn't go in if he holds still.

This was just a flat out ball buster, Devils were caving them + no goal call and then that shit goes in. That's when I knew it wasn't meant to be tonight.

No, I don’t trust Schmid. The issue is there is no solution right now. Nothing they can do about it this year at least.

Honestly, I think Daws/Malek might be more of an answer in the long run. But that doesn’t solve the current issues.
Daws?

I have less than optimal trust in him but only because he hasn't gotten a chance to come up and try the NHL Goaltender thing again like Schmid got.

Who is Malek?

Finally saw the replays.

Siegenthaler was waaaay to lacksadasical on the play leading to the first goal (or soft).

Vitek angling on 3rd goal was as bad as i thought it was live.

The PK cant give up so much upfront pressure on their pointmen. Their guys arent that amazing deserving that much "respect". In fact pressure them to force them to pass around on njd dime versus their decision

This is just the beginning. Special teams is correctable. I think the pace of play at even strength was roughly even.

Anyone heading for the hills after 1 game can stay there. It’s a series for a reason.
Sam Rosen has the Rangers in the finals. They may be the greatest team in the history of history.

Or the Devils had a bad period; as if that never happened before.

Yeah that sucked, but after the first 10 minutes they played fine. The Rangers completely turtled from the first intermission on. Igor was good but we didn't get a huge amount of quality on him, most of it was one and done from the outside.

But - think a huge part of that was going down so early. Which I blame on the special teams. 0 shots on 4 PPs is atrocious and unacceptable.

The Rangers clearly did their homework and know that we like to look back to the points and go for royal road passes. They had their sticks ready. If they're going to deny us those passes, then the onus is on the players to be more aggressive driving to the net and generating their own chances (especially the big four - Hughes, Bratt, Nico, Timo).

I', not sure if lineup changes are necessary at the moment, but shortening the bench in the 2nd and 3rd shows that Lindy isn't confident in the 4th line to do anything positive to help turn the score around. I don't know what subbing Wood/Bastian out for Lazar would do to change that, but it is a bit concerning that we can't be a 4 line team.

That being said, I'm not going to panic. In 2012 we were down in all three of our Eastern series and we came back to win all of them. The nerves are out of your system. You got punched in the mouth and now you know you're not made of glass. Get back on track tomorrow night and steal a game at the garden to get home ice back.

Main board? I might avoid this board.
making the playoffs - the rest is gravy

there is nothing wrong with wanting to winning or at least to be competitive. i just don't see any reason to turn on the team, the coaching staff or any single players because of a sample size of one game.

a learning experience was kind of expected and the more games the team gets the better for the future. if the next three games end in the same fashion and the team gets swepped without any resistance, there is serious concerns. based on a single game i don't get.

suck it up, toughen up, try again in the next game

Why does it make me feel better Toronto is losing like that?

I even like Toronto.
you have less toronto fans on the mainboard talking sh*t about the devils.

Missed the third period but after thinking about the game more disappointed with the result than the effort.

Wish they would have hit the net more in the early going and been a bit more thorough in their own end.

All things that can be corrected.

Drive to the net by players like Bratt, Meier and the BMW line will wear down the Rangers and Igor as the series progresses.
