Actually, my scientific expertise is in chemistry. :dunno:

I do know that panthers aren't real and the logo is most definitely a puma.

So what is the difference between a panther and a cougar, anyway?
Cougars are pumas. The naming difference just depends on the region they're from. Puma is a Latin word and cougar is an English translation. The cougar/puma is the animal the Florida Panthers are named after.

The panther isn't a real species. "Panther" is like a colloquial term for a big cat that isn't a lion or a tiger. Although it technically can include lions and tigers most people will just call them lions and tigers. Panthers include cougars, pumas, jaguars, and lynxeses.

That doesnt explain the subfamilys Pantherinae and Felinae though! Pantherinae is Panther!
