NHLX TURBO - 2023/24 Season Beta

DOWNLOADS

- You'll want to make sure to grab the DB file and the extra config. I'm going to try to keep this link to the database folder "live" so you can grab an update whenever you want.

NHLX Turbo Database

LEAGUES
- You can only play the NHL and AHL. This is why this is NHL "Turbo" :)

PLAYERS
- NHL UFAs are unattached. I have not messed with RFA's yet, they are still on their 2022-23 contracts on their teams
- ELC contracts have been "slid" with their new numbers per CapFriendly.
- Aged out drafted CHL players remain property of their NHL teams for now.
- Aged out drafted NCAA players - if the player has a 5th year of eligibility, they remain in college. If not, they've been made free agents with no NHL rights.
- I've removed NHL rights for older guys who aren't even prospects anymore and are playing in Siberia or have basically no chances at NHL careers. Some of them were deleted in the great purge anyways.
- NHL roster and systems including prospects have been re-rated based on 23-24, although I'm still messing with some things as usual
- 2007, 2008 and 2009 real prospects have been updated - includes the 2007 U17 USNTDP Team (plus a projected 2008 USNTDP roster), last night's 2007 OHL draft class (the highlights anyways) and projections for future CHL draft classes.
- All other rosters outside the NHL will be in flux, plenty of updates but tons more to do. Have yet to really dig into European rosters (but also keep in mind in this streamlined DB, many rosters will feature only "highlights" - top prospects and players with legit potential)
- Old players and staff have been completely weeded out
- Lots of future added players for robust draft classes throughout the sim (the real prospects right now stop in 2008 with a few dozen in 2009). Have yet to hit some of the minor nations yet - future versions will have greater chances at legit players from smaller countries. ECK - I stole some of the nationality name lists from TLB/Pivot so thanks! :) (the actual player attributes are completely different though)

2023-24 NHL STATS
- All updated so you'll have accurate prospect lists and rankings and competition for the 2023-24 Calder Trophy.

TEAMS
- Atlanta, Houston, Quebec and Portland are the NHL expansion teams.
- Some updating of Euro league tiers but not a lot yet (and keep in mind - not playable anyways)
- Keeping the OHL Bulldogs in Hamilton since Brantford is only a temporary home
- There is no ECHL or lower level North American pro leagues...just not interested in playing them, their rosters fluctuate too much and the level of players are bad. NHL teams only have an AHL affiliate but with the reduced database you will have plenty of space to store prospects on your AHL team

2023 NHL DRAFT
- The first two rounds are integrated into the DB. This will get the top real prospects on their proper development track and keep the top of the 2024 draft more accurate. Made some projections on 2023-24 clubs including import possibilities.
- Did a random lottery results generator...don't complain to me that your team didn't get Bedard. You can always edit with archi's editor. LOL.
- Will of course update everything after the real draft.

OTHER STUFF
- Olympics will be wonky, have yet to update them
- Recommend playing with "FULL" database size since the DB is so much smaller now anyways.
- You shouldn't need to add any fake players or prospects or staff.

Here's the settings I use:
CCugUF3.png

GRAPHICS
- In flux, but here is the latest graphics pack. I am streamlining even more stuff so some of the logos are not updated especially for the "reduced" youth-type leagues.

And I've already tinkered. With the news floating around that Salt Lake City is interested in pursuing an NHL future, I've demoted Portland to the AHL and upgraded and re-branded the SLC club from the Grizzlies to the Salt Lake City Swarm - the new 36th team in the NHL. The Rosebuds will serve as the Swarm's AHL affiliate. I liked the idea of going with a unique color scheme here, similar to the San Diego Padres. FYI the live links for the DB and graphics should be updated for SLC.

ZD7joXe.png

I've started a maiden campaign as GM. Got rid of my entire coaching staff - hired veteran AGM Trevor Timmins and Providence College's Nate Leaman as an attacking minded head coach. The new backroom staff includes former NHLers like Freddy Brathwaite, Francois Beauchemin and Sergei Samsonov.

I then went on a big free agent spending spree. The expansion teams generally suck as putting together rosters, even with UFAs available so I was able to really build a pretty good squad by out-spending other clubs.

Puck drop for our first game was in Vancouver against the Canucks:

xnO5kCp.png

A loss, but a decent first performance. Actually outshot the Canucks but had a woeful PP.

KQaqruD.png

Second game is the home franchise opener at Vivint Arena (AKA "The Hive") against another recent expansion team, the Kraken...and it was a magnificent win!

At the 1/4 mark of the first season of NHL hockey in the SLC...the Swarm are killing it!

aSBpd3Z.png

My Russian free agent signings are killing it. Granted - I'm running a very "run and gun" tactical scheme so I knew I was going to be able to get some goals out of this line-up but Barbasehv is having a season for the ages. Tarasenko looks re-born on the opposite wing and Orlov has been exactly the #1 defenseman I was looking for.

tXPfcFR.png

It will be interesting to see if I can make a legit run or if I tail off - how much I can squeeze out of some of these guys at the trade deadline. Either way - the top guns of the 2024 draft like Celebrini, Eiserman, Kiviharju and Demidov look out of reach for me as I'm doing way too well.

VdbtIw3.png

And Barbashev with another 4-point night. He's putting up McDavid numbers. Not sure what's gotten into him - he's a hard-working player with a nice shot but this is crazy. He's shooting 27.3%...

So, at the TDL, I had the Swarm sitting in 3rd in the West and within striking distance of first, but I decided to deconstruct things in order to build a more sustainable future. My free agent frenzy had netted a deep and very good team but one perilously close to the cap ceiling and with basically tons of long-term deals on guys in that 28-32 age bracket. Meaning very little future maneuvering room and lots of players that will soon be on the downsides of their careers.

I shopped around basically everyone not in my core - some very useful players - and netted a ton of extra draft equity both this summer and into the future.

m3GwEQH.png

Of course, I knew the team would take a fall in the standings with such a dramatic hit on depth but was still able to guide them to 7th in the West and the playoffs in the inaugural season.

8iF0fVE.png

Much of that is attributed to Tarasenko, Barbashev and Orlov - my Russian core obtained in free agency (along with Gavrikov). Tarasenko and Barbasehv were a two-man show offensively and Tank wound up winning the Art Ross! Much of this can be attributed to my tactics - Tank's rating after a poor 2022-23 season in real life and declining returns isn't even all that amazing but he and Barbashev just had crazy chemistry in my up-tempo scheme.

ZtpGs8i.png

Here were the 2023-24 statistical leaders...surprisingly sub-par from McDavid and Draisatl who almost always finish in the top 3 in my test sims...

73NPBuc.png

Bedard led the rookies, easily - to nobody's surprise. He also led the rebuilding. Blackhawks in scoring. Luke Hughes actually had a better game rating but missed a chunk of the season…and obviously played on a mugg vs better team.

Lots of rookie goalies also had strong years. Devon Levi led the Sabres in starts and put up 26-10-2 with a .907 sv% to lead the Sabres to the playoffs for the first time in ages. Dustin Wolf might have been even better for the Flames with 18 wins in 34 starts and a sterling .924 sv% while Samuel Ersson is really starting to make the Flyers think about trading Carter Hart. They basically split starts in net and both won 20 games.

zSL4u3x.png

I'll be playing the Predators in the best of 3 NHLX Playoff Qualifying Round. We split the series in the regular season. Games 1 and 3 (if needed) will be at the Hive as I have home-ice. The Pred as always are led by Saros in net and Josi along the blueline as well as Forsberg and Duchene up front. Tommy Novak continued where he left off in 22-23 by being a full-season revelation in 23-24 and the Preds have developed some nice young depth. They are certainly not an over-powering team though so I'm hopeful I can get past this round!

Game 1 vs Preds. Blew a 2- led in the third at home and lose 3-2.

t4qcro1.png

Game 2 vs Preds in Nashville - a must win or I'm out. Take a 2-1 lead into the third again, allow the game to get tied up and then lose in OT. Season over. Brutal way to end but all in all, I can't have much to complain about...I knew this could happen when I dealt all those assets at the deadline. But - I think it will help fuel the franchise into the future. Time will tell!

DyGoF5I.png

Here's the match-ups now with the Prelims out of the way.

West top seeds are Dallas, LA, Winnipeg and Colorado.
East top seeds are Tampa, New Jersey, Carolina and Buffalo.

Tampa and Toronto get matched up again as well as the Avalanche and Oilers. The East Prelims came out by seed with no surprises but Calgary, Nashville and Vancouver all pulled upsets in the West bracket.

Some surprises as we hit the Conference Finals.

Out West, the Jets and surprising Predators will square off. The Oilers fall short once again though no fault of McDavid or Draisatl who were cooking but the Jets' depth and Hellebuyck in net were the difference. The Preds are getting an unreal run from Saros who is an early Conn Smythe candidate.

In the East, the Lightning and Hurricanes will square off in a conference final showdown that surprises...nobody. Will Vasilevskiy - who has been in typical playoff form - be the difference or will his young compatriot in the opposing goal - Pyotr Kochetkov - make his own mark?

And it's the Tampa Bay Lightning returning to the Finals in 2024 to face the Winnipeg Jets.

The Jets had a good season but are a pretty big surprise given their underperformance in 22-23 and did very little to change their roster, brining essentially the exact same team back this year and making only very minor moves during the season. But their big guns stepped up this year and the Connor-Schiefele-Ehlers line went NUTS. Add in a deep blueline led by Josh Morrissey and great goaltending from Hellebuyck and you see a franchise that has never lived up to its talent finally make a deep run.

4M7Pg8q.png

The Lightning of course are the Lightning still. They won the President's Trophy, Kucherov won the Rocket Richard Trophy, Stamkos and Point joined him in the century club and Vasilevskiy is again on the Vezina shortlist. The Lightning beefed up their depth at the deadline adding Sean Walker and Chris Wideman along the blueline and Sam Steel, Julien Gauthier and Rem Pitlick for forward depth.

CdYCtdk.png

STANLEY CUP FINALS - GAME 1
- Easy victory for the Lightning who cruise and establish their bona fides right away:
aamX8BW.png

STANLEY CUP FINALS - GAME 2
- The Jets make this one closer, but again the Lightning offense is too much. Not a great game for Hellebuyck who lets in 5 on only 30 shots. The Jets muster only 21 shots on the flip side.
UXavJWI.png

STANLEY CUP FINALS - GAME 3
- Series heads up North but it makes no difference in a blowout for Tampa. Their experience and talent appears overwhelming,
BGnJGd1.png

STANLEY CUP FINALS - GAME 4
- Get out the brooms! It's a sweep and Tampa scored 5 or more goals in all four games.
2mOCw68.png

2023-24 Playoff Leaders
Points:
Ehlers (WPG) and Stamkos (TBL) with 26 each
Goals: Kucherov (TBL) with 15
Avg Rating (Min 10 GP): Draisatl at 9.00 (10 goals, 17 points in 11 games)
Wins: Vasilevskiy with 14
SV% (Min 10 GP): Saros at 0.940

Around the globe in 2023-24...

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

- Canada wins the World Championships over Sweden in a dramatic nail-biter with Kirby Dach winning the Gold for TC in OT.
- Sweden settles for Silver while Finland beats a surprise run from the Swiss to claim Bronze.
- Logan Thompson wins MVP in net for Canada. Mika Zibanejad wins the points title with 15 in 10 games while Wild Bill Karlsson swins the goal scoring crown with 10 in 10 games.

CuD7Jyf.png

Zf77WKL.png

WORLD JUNIORS
- Russia takes home the Gold over athe USA with a thrilling OT win. Gleb Trikozov with the game winner.
- Sweden edged by Finland 3-2 in the Bronze medal game. Canada was surprisingly dumped in the quarterfinals by Russia after going undefeated in the Group stage. They gave up 5 straight goals in a 5-2 loss as poor goaltending crippled an otherwise strong team.
- Frank Nazar had a standout tournament for the USA, winning MVP and the points title. Jani Nyman had 8 goals to lead the tournament.

As we approach the 2024 Draft, the Final CSS Rankings are out:

4htuWR7.png

4chHaqx.png

A few guys in the top 100 that didn't make it into the two-round 2023 Mock that is built into the database but otherwise enjoying how this is shaping up.

We've known for a while now that Eiserman, Celebrini, Kiviharju and Demidov are the crown jewels but Kiviharju slipped just a bit in the final rankings...on his heels are a couple of other stud blueliners with bigger frames in Levshunov and Jiricek. Berkley Catton crashed the top 4 - he's not as developed perhaps as some of the others but very dynamic and loaded with two-way upside as a center.

Elsewhere in the rankings:
- Konsta Helenius joins Kiviharju as a highly-rated Finn.
- Tomas Galvas gives the Czeh's two potential top 15 blueliners.
- Poor draft from Sweden in terms of top end talent with only Alex Zetterberg ranked as a possible first rounder.
- Strong draft for the WHL with Tanner Howe joining Catton as a potential top 10 pick and many others potentially in the first.
- The OHL for the second straight year may be lacking a true top end, top 10 type talent. Bennett Sennecke leads the way at 15. Michael Hage took the NCAA route in lieu of the OHL and is 14th.
- Maxim Masse easily leads Q-eligible prospects and is a potential top 10 selection.
- Outside of Eiserman, the 2006 USNTDOP class has some other high-flyers in Cole Hutson (Lane's brother), Kamil Bednarik and Kristian Epperson. James Hagens is a star but a late boirthday so not eligible until next season.
- Top ranked goalies include two Finns in Emil VInni and Petteri Riimpinen while Czech netminder Jakub Milota could also be a high pick.
- Levshunov at #6 is by far the highest rated prospect from a non-traditional power.

@BKarchitect I just love it when you can find useful players from Europe!

I'm running through a super quick paced test playing with SLC, and in year one I picked up an AHL depth piece from Russia named Arseni Gritsyuk. He spent 3 years in the AHL, averaging 35 points a year, then a spot opened up on the NHL team and he grabbed it and never looked back! After 2 seasons of adapting, he has been a consistent 35-40 goal scorer, and one of my best players!

Haha nice! Gritsyuk is actually a bit of a bug I’ve just fixed - he’s a top prospect for the Devils who have his rights indefinitely (as a KHL based prospect) but because of a “bug” in EHM when I rolled over to the new season they lost his rights due to his draft year.

So next time you download the DB he will be either rights-owned by the Devils or signed by then which I suspect will happen in real life as he is out of contract in the KHL.

Buuuuut - I’m the meantime, enjoy his services on Salt Lake and you did a proper job in developing him for sure!

I wish I knew why coaches make the decisions they do... I don't coach games because I just spam the broken tactics and win every year, and whats the fun in that?

I have a 2nd line center.

This center played 2nd line center all year long... He scored 17 goals, and 43 assists for 60 points... he was plus 2... he went 59% on faceoffs.

I then have a spare center...

This center played 8 games all year, netting 3 assists...

My number 2 center is not hurt, he isn't having emotional issues, he isn't angry... he didn't get suspended... just... got scratched the second the playoffs started.

I thought it might be a "player status" issue... but he is listed as "core," and my spare is listed as "prospect."

Here is my 2nd line center:
Pono stats.png

and here is my depth center:
Schwabl stats.png

is there anything here that should stick out to me that the depth center is the choice to go with? Also, he was played as the 2C the whole playoffs... even though on my depth chart he is my 5th C... and when looking at reputation, ranks behind 5 wingers that "can" play C. (I know reputation isn't really a good indication of a players worth)

EDIT: ON TOP OF THAT the game just awarded my scratched 2nd line center with the King Clancy Memoria Trophy... smh coach... smh.

2024 DRAFT RESULTS

- I came away with quite a haul. Because of my unexpectedly good first season, my pick in the 1st round was until #19 but I also was able to accrue a massive amount of picks with my trade deadline sell-offs to build up my system. Keep in mind, some of these guys are 2023 eligible but the DB only has two rounds of 2023 mocked.

Basically, my strategy was to cast a wide and diverse net. I also only selected guys with at least a '15' for Determination. It's a trait I have a strong preference for and one I feel positively affects development.

JGkBL1l.png

- The overall results featured the Noriques grabbing Eiserman at #1 to build their future around. I really like Celebrini going to the Pens to grab the torch eventually from an aging Crosby and Malkin. The Thrashers will be building their blueline around Kiviharju while the Aeros first foundational piece is center Berkley Catton.

I may have asked this before, but this thread moves so fast so it’s tough to keep the pace.

playing with the default rosters, is there somehow a way you can add more ethic naming options in the database - or am I stuck?

my save has Portuguese and Brazilian players spawning which I like, but they either have Russian names or some wacky Asian name when they generate. I have to use the assistant to manually edit some names to make it sound natural, since the Portugal and Brazil naming options are only limited by so much.

You can easily add more names to the database yes. Will the game use them and generate more players? Not without significant modification to the database.

Is there any active development on EHM by Riz (or SI) any longer?

Kind of a complicated answer. I'm sure some of the 'bigger players' that do behind the scenes DB creating can chime in a bit more, but to me the project seems to be in limbo.

SI won't commit money into the project, Riz is committed to Football Manager full time and only does EHM in his spare time, and there is some uncertainty if there is another update.

Will there be an EHM2 with new features? I would say most likely no - unless Riz takes the project and moves somewhere else with it, or SI puts more people into helping him
