So montreals magic number is 1?

I thought if Columbus went 2-0-1 both teams would have 88 pts and 27 row, is the next tiebreaker not gf?
The first time breaker is the regular wins. Then the regular wins + OT wins. Then total wins. Then H2H total pts (depending on number of meetings). Then Diff. Then total goals

This means Columbus needs to win all 3 games in regulation if they are tied for pts (if MTL gets a loser pts)

Waiting for the take two on Fantilli from Leonard, somehow Ovechkin will play, he must feel like habs is easier to take on first round
They said yesterday was a rest day for him.. He didn't travel with the team and he stayed in Washington. Sounds like it was always part of the plan

Magic number is still 2, in your example it’s 1,
Magic number depends really.

The magic number for the Habs is 2, meaning a Habs win of any fashion in their last two games and they are in regardless of what CBJ does.

However, CBJ’s tragic number is 1 meaning if they lose a point in any of their final three games, they are out regardless if the Habs lose their final two games in regulation.

The reason for that is if the Habs lose their final two games in regulation, they will be locked in at 88 points, 29 RW and 37 ROW.

If the Blue Jackets win two in regulation but lose a point in a OT or SO loss they will also have 88 points with 29 RW and 31 RW.

Habs would win the tiebreaker by having more ROW.

Magic number is based on, what is needed to clinch, not on what could possibly happen.
So ya it’s 2.

No it isn’t. It’s the combination of points to clinch. Right now it’s 2 if you only look at the Habs perspective but if Columbus just gets one point today, Habs clinch.

Magic number is a combination of points gained and points lost between 2 teams fighting for a playoff spot

In montreals case it can either be 2 gained or one lost from cbj

Yes it is lol.
Habs magic number is 2 right now, magic number is not based on what if scenarios.

otherwise if Columbus wins out, and Montreal just gets a point, habs are out.
If Columbus wins out , habs need 2 points.
That’s why you don’t play the what if game, magic number is 2.

So if Columbus loses in ot that’s one point.

If Montreal gets a point, Columbus needs all wins in regulation

The "Magic number" works better in baseball because they have straightforward wins and losses. No different tiers of wins, like hockey has with Regulation, OT, and SO, where each win has a different value.

Which explains how Montreal and Columbus can have different 'magic numbers'. If Montreal gets 1 more point, Columbus can still win. Three straight Columbus wins ties Montreal with 89, but Columbus then surpasses Montreal thanks to one more RW. Columbus makes the playoffs.

On the other hand, if Columbus loses 1 point, the maximum points they can get is 5, which ties them with Montreal at 88 (assuming the Habs lose their last two). Then Columbus has the same RWs but fewer ROWs, so Montreal makes the playoffs.
