Of course the West point total to reach the WC2 will be higher when you have 3 teams in the West eliminated 15games before the end of the season. So many free points thrown around in that conference. No one was expected to tank in the East except Montreal and yet they still in it.

With that said, playing .507 hockey and still being in the race with 10games to go is insane.

Well, also the last wildcard in the West is decent - STL has 87 pts. With East WC contenders losing most of the time, it's hard to eliminate teams.

How are they both getting in, they’re both behind WC1 in the east, that was my point, you’ve yet to refute.

They would face different competition if they were competing for a playoff spot in the east.

Just to drive home point distribution. The two conferences have the same amount of GP. The east has 1 more point than the west.

H2H East is 249-196-48, West is 244-196-53. Intra-conference OTL, East has 65, West has 69. Two really bad teams in SJS and CHI have driven up point totals of teams above them.

If there is more parity, the points required to qualify will be lower. I don’t necessarily see this as a race of losers. Just a bunch of close teams.

Not necessarily “losers” but for reference, going into the day Montreal was -28. When Toronto was dead last and people said they were intentionally tanking they finished -48. They (Montreal) were also pacing for 16 more points than that season. Yet might make playoffs.

They would also have fewer games against Chicago, San Jose and Nashville, so I doubt that would actually be the case.
