Eastern Conference Wild Card Watch

The wheels fell off the Jackets and I come back a few days later after they have not played and they are in a better position now (they now have games in hand?. What a strange wildcard race.

Edit: Having games in hand is like having a stock at a high level. It doesn't mean anything until you convert on it.

Nobody wants to get owned by the Caps in the first round it seems.

As a Rangers fan, they certainly have no business making the playoffs at the rate they're going. Yet if MTL loses tonight, and the Rangers beat the Ducks, they'll take over the spot.

Didn't realize how abysmal the East Wild Card race is compared to the West. The Blues who are currently 8th in the West would be 11 points above the 9th team in the East. They would also be 3rd in the Metro. Right now the teams battling for the final spot in the East are all playing horrible hockey.

Montreal has 75 points in 71 games and in their last 10 they are 3-3-4
Islanders have 74 points in 71 games and in their last 10 they are 4-3-3
Rangers have 74 points in 72 games and in their last 10 they are 3-6-1
Columbus has 73 points in 70 games and in their last 10 they are 2-7-1
Detroit has 72 points in 72 games and in their last 10 they are 3-7-0

There are 5 teams that could have easily gotten ahold of the final spot within the last couple weeks and not a single one has stepped up to the plate. If any of St. Louis, Calgary, or Vancouver were in the East they would be in the playoffs. Even Utah would be tied for the last spot with one more game played.

This is just a function of the west having two really bad teams and east having no really bad teams. On points percentage. It’s just a different point distribution between conferences.

Honestly doesn't seem that way. I don't think it's a strength of schedule thing at all. A lot of the East and West wild card teams have been facing each other the past two weeks and the Eastern teams have gotten slaughtered. It seems like the Western wild card teams are just better. In the past ~ten days the Western wild cards teams are 5-1 against the Eastern wild card teams.

If we are talking about point cutoff for playoffs or points of teams in the race you would obviously look at entire season and not a select few teams in a small sample.

Calgary has done well in march vs Eastern teams in the race. They are 4-0.

STL 1-0
VAN 2-2
UTH 1-2

St. Louis for example has played Nsh x3 and Chi in the last two weeks. Thats strength of schedule.

Teams in the west race are hot right in the last two weeks. Teams in the east race were hot two weeks before that.

Some teams out West get to play Chicago, Nashville, and SJ 4 times.
