Eakins or Carlyle

I would've gone with Eakins. As others have said, he has that "it" quality to get the most out of every single guy. Not to mention how dedicated he is to fitness, would've been good for some guys.

He seems to know what buttons to push with our young players, ie Kadri, to get them to perform at their top level.

I don't hate the Carlyle choice, it's a logical one given all factors, but it's a safe choice. IMO, it's time to take a chance on something/someone. Whether it be Eakins at coach, Kadri at centre in the NHL, or going all in for a star centre/goalie, it needs to be done. The last real splash we made was the Phaneuf deal.

Lupul and Gardiner?

No it hasn't. Who's your choice?

Your 1.5 months of being here have told you this?

And if we had Eakins there would be 50 threads popping up asking if he s ready, if he was rushed and people calling him an AHL coach. How about we wait until the puck is dropped and see how the team plays. Far to many crystal ball readers here.

Wilson.

Seriously, one thing that bugs me is all this talk about fitness with Carlyle. Go back to Wilson's beginning and he stressed the fitness level, then go back to when Maurice came in and his big thing was improving fitness. Man we must have been in bad shape with Quinn!

You can insert the name of any coach to ever join any team, ever. Make it double if they didn't make the playoffs the year before.

Not surprised they went with Carlyle given the state of the team and a GM desperate to make the playoffs.

Stanley Cup vs Calder Cup runner up

Its quite easy to pick imo. Nothing against Eakins, he may have potential but we're here to win games, if you have Eakins you don't know what you have really. He could bring us to the cup or bust big time. With Carlyle he's a proven NHL coach but people need to stop gushing over Eakins because of what he does in the AHL its actually quite pathetic by how much this fan base makes him out to be some sort of messiah lol

I think coaching is the least of our worries at the moment. We have some pretty good prospects on the Marlies , and our coach is one of them. I'm a huge fan of Eakins, but there was just no way Burke could throw him to the wolves and right into the TML job at the moment. He needed an experienced coach who could steady the ship. Maybe if this were first year of a rebuild, he could afford to hand over the keys to Eakins and let him grow with the team, but there is a lot of pressure on the team to compete now and bringing in Carlyle just makes a ton of sense. We may lose Eakins, but thats the chance you take and I dont see how BB had much choice.

I'm just glad that we finally have good coaching at all levels. What's nice is that both teams play close by and have the same system in place. It's a very good situation.

2-3 years Eakins will be the coach of the Maple Leafs. Carlyle will be moved up in the organization. I think the timing on was a bit off; safe to assume that Eakins was supposed to be the guy after Wilson but with Wilson's firing it changed the timeline.

I'm legit wondering if any of you people even think.

You want to put Eakins behind the bench now? In a shortened season? When the training camp is like a week? And you want him to implement his system effectively without a full off season?

Those are some great questions that will probably get some dumb answers.

If anything, leave Carlyle this year, see if his system gels, if not, Eakins after making a long playoff run, hopefully Calder Cup champs, will be then thrusted to his throne as Leafs coach.

That wasnt a splash at the time. Now it's huge, but at the time people were more pleased with ridding ourselves of Beauchemin than getting Gards and Lupul.

I'm talking a big move, a move that makes people go "holy ****". See: Phaneuf, Kessel deals.

Also, Kessel deal didn't make me go holy **** like Phaneuf's. Kessel was more holy **** when those 1st rounders turned into a #2 and a top 10. Then it was a sad....holy ****.

Randy for a couple of years while Eakins gets the experience. Eakins, like Nonis, seems to be a loyal Burke kinda guy.

Carlyle for sure. Now that Burke's gone, if Carlyle gets fired we'll have no chance at Getzlaf this offseason. Maybe post 2013 if Carlyle doesn't do much, I might go for Eakins.

I think Eakins is the better coach, but I want to see a full season out of Carlyle in Toronto before I really judge that.
