I still have a good feeling about Cozens. Ottawa is a low scoring team; everyone's numbers are down this year. Cozens is the right age to grow and mature with the team. Hopefully it all culminates with Ottawa becoming a cup contender.
It’s not cozens offence that worries people. Although for 7 million he doesn’t do much offensively

The first goal he did nothing to tie up his man in Front of the net, if I know something about Travis Green hockey his 6’3” C has to at least push the guy who’s trying to score - happened on the 2nd goal too he was puck watching big time
"Puck Watching" is a consistent problem with some of our forwards on this team.

This board is obsessed with offence & pts, the biggest difference between this team being in a playoff position this yr from last yr is because they have cut down on their goals against. This is something I have been stressing for yrs now that they need to cut down on their goals against while most have & still do want more offensive players which we can't afford. They have taken a big step forward this yr playing great defensively & this young group is just starting to mature & develop into a very good team.

This is the whole point of bringing in more players who are hard to play against & much better goaltending that help reduce the goals against, the offence will be fine, they have plenty of good offensive players. I have zero concerns about 5 on 5 production that will balance it self out over time, we do need to start finding replacements for our aging players & they are also in the process of doing that.

Someone said in the GDT last night he might be out of shape and I agree with that. At least that’s what it looks like watching him, he seems to not have enough jump to chase pucks now that the adrenaline has worn off. I don’t think it’s an effort thing either.

Anyway, not really expecting much to close out the season/playoffs, though hopefully he can regain his earlier form. I’ll worry if he still looks like this next season though.
Coming by to see how Cozens is doing. To the bolded- in Sabreland we believe he has confidence issues. It makes his entire game look a bit...wonky? He'll make a nice play here or there, but when we watched him shift by shift we'd notice a player that seems to be second guessing a lot of things. He's young + was groomed in the wasteland that is Buffalo, so give him time. The tools he has are enticing. That being said, we grew to believe he'd be a better winger than center. Still can carve out a nice career in the top-6, but confidence and IQ may always be lacking a bit.

Norris looks about the same as years past. On the injury list :( wise of your GM to move on from an 8M player that can never stay healthy.

I’ll say, he tries so hard and then he’ll go into a battle and just concede the puck, it’s like everything is set up perfectly for him and he just gives up body position and will lose a 50/50 puck battle with ease. To me he doesn’t have great sense of leverage like a David Perron or Ridly Greig does, he loses puck battles way too fast sometimes IMO. He battles like MikeHoffman sometimes you’re not sure what side of the puck he wants to be on and neither does he.

The hard ice hockey we saw in the first 5 games isn’t there now, he prefers to roll high on the blue line and play in softer ice.

Still a good player but I see the a lack of awarenessin his game. Good player, but he’s good at what he’s good at and what he’s not good at - intensity - it’s obvious he has holes in his situational awareness

He’s like a bad version of Gino Malkin, amazing on the PP, really noticble physically sometimes, and then he takes 3 shifts off, or starts a shift on fire and then loses a puck battle to a smaller player, and then score a goal when you think he’s not having a great game

I think I agree with that. It looks like some mental stuff is going on. Either confidence or just thinking too much. Or a bit of both.

The hope is that with the staff here he can work on those things. Getting stronger, quicker, more comfortable with the team mates and city should all help that.
He’s still very young and has potential to be just what we need.

Norris was not as good of a fit here but could end up an even better player. The hope for him is that he can get healthy next year. This year was a pretty big success imo considering everything he went through.
We’re cheering for the guy over here.

I still think Norris will end up in Van over the summer. Maybe Byram + Norris in deal for Pettersson?

Cozens was really good first few games but strangely you don't notice him right now and probably it started at the same time as Tkachuk injury. Seeing Tkachuk play probably encourage his style of play.

The guy look like a shy guy who doesn't want to do a mistake in crucial moment for the team in this playoff push. I saw him make a mistake that lead to goal 2 games ago he looked really mad at himself guy definitely cares.

That being said at 7 millions a year as top 6 center for sure you have to produce points and more. But it's not the time yet to judge Cozens play , maybe in the playoffs but more provably next season were he will have a real impact on the season.

Norris is a great player when he is healthy, he is a complete player playing well at both ends of the ice & has a rocket of a shot. Once he gets healthy you will have a good one & he will make those around him better too.

The only way this would happen is if there is a regime change in Buffalo, and whoever takes over wants to re-tool. They wanted a hockey deal for Cozens to change the culture, and they had a few on the table. Adams and Ruff view Norris highly as a 20 minute a night 2-way center.

Wonky is the perfect word to describe him. I honestly haven’t fully gotten a read on him yet, both because I’ve missed more games of late and because he’s just a hard player to evaluate. He’s pretty nifty and his playmaking impresses me almost every game but yeah… he looks wonky out there. Could be confidence as you suggested, I’m really not sure what drives it. He seems to be a lot better with time and space, but also doesn’t seem dumb without it - just slow. To your point, maybe he does just panic or start overthinking it.

I love Norris. One of my favs. He’s got limitations himself with his puck skills and battles but at his best he is such a fun player to watch. Great shot, great speed and a good brain. Hope he can stay healthy for you guys, but obviously that’s the big concern.

Despite Cozens' issues, he's still put up 10 points in 16 games. That's a 51-point pace over an entire season.
Ideally for the money we would be getting more

With some context of the whole deal it’s not as bad.

But 7 mil needs to bring more than 50 points and poor defensive play

He was really good when he first started here. Lately he’s getting caved in like crazy. 2 pts in his last 7, and even when the underlying numbers were good, that line was still on a hot streak that wasn’t likely to last.

Anyway, I’m not sounding the alarm, it’s just an observation.

A couple more is that when he first started he was being pretty sheltered by Green. Lower ice-time (~15 mins), now generally getting ~17 min. He’s also getting more d-zone starts. So that in part could explain some of the discrepancies, but if he keeps playing like this for a long time the points won’t look so good.

The more I see, I like healthy Norris more than healthy Cozens. Cozens just seems awkward and low IQ, even if he's out there winning face offs, making hits, etc., Having said that, his availability and playmaking is making him worth it. He's pushing Pinto down in the line up and letting us roll 3 effective lines. He's still got some development left in his game too

I think we should be patient with FabZ because ... well I will think of something and have very little patience with Cozens.

I love the trade and I think Cozens is a much better fit at 2C here than Norris.

He kinda like the forward version of Chabot lol.

Good and bad.
I don't mind that comparison,

I do find Cozens typically doesn't have the "too casual" element Chabot can sometimes be guilty off. His gaffs tend to be risk taking for offense (chabot does that too).

I think he's at his best when he's being physical, would love to see Tkachuk-Cozens-Batherson together for a bit.

I remember him forgetting to bring the puck with him from behind the net in the last game.

In any event, no skater aside from maybe Sanderson can be accused of having a tremendous stretch of games lately.
