He’s had like 2 bad games since he’s been here. Pretty much every player on the team has had 2 bad games somewhere in that stretch. I get he’s under a microscope because we just traded for him, but we collectively need to relax.
I'm basing my post on him is a player. Mostly with his whole body of work with the Sens, but throwing in what I know of him in his career.

None of what I said I think is off base, or in need of 'relaxing'. His whole career in Buffalo he showed signs of being a net negative player on the ice due to terrible mistakes. Those things have started to show in his play in the last few games, its something to watch out for.

Oh please, he had one bad game. Otherwise he's been very good and helped spark Batherson.
No one knows for sure if he will elevate his game beyond what he did the first few games, or if he will revert to his Buffalo play, or someplace in between.

I think the best way to evaluate him so far is to look at his numbers as a whole. Not what he did in just one game, but not what he did taking out his bad game. Good stretches count. Bad games count. Great games count. What you do as a whole, including all of those things, is what makes a player.

With that said, what is he? He so far since the trade is exactly this: 13 games, 3 goals, 6 assists. -2. 16:11 minutes per game.

Per 82 games that paces out to 19 goals, 38 assists, -13. That is what he is, good and bad combined, up until this point. At least those are his numbers. The team has 17 points in 13 games with him (I think). Too small of a sample size to make a firm judgement.

"Too small of a sample size to make a firm judgement."

That's a bannable offence around here.

Over the last number of games the Perron - Cozens - Batherson line has been our best line. At some point they will need to place Brady back with Stu & Giroux, the Fabio experiment isn't working, I don't know where that guy will fit in, if he even does. We are a three line team at the moment, hope to see Halliday given some games in Ott soon.

Zetterlund is definitely working. He actually forechecks. I'd opt for moving Perron or Giroux to the third line before I move Zetterlund back down. Zetterlund millimetres away from scoring a bunch. If you move him away from Stü then he needs to go with another play maker duo in Batherson and Cozens.

People are quick to pounce after a loss... Coache's fault seems popular with the few anti-Green hold outs. ... a couple games without a point the player sucks .. should kept Norris cuz something ..

The first goal he did nothing to tie up his man in Front of the net, if I know something about Travis Green hockey his 6’3” C has to at least push the guy who’s trying to score - happened on the 2nd goal too he was puck watching big time

He also doesn’t have to do much for the trade to be a win.
We still get to draft a 2nd rounder.

The 1st goal was a mishandled rebound where Ullmark lost the puck. That was 100% on him. The 2nd goal was a shot Ullmark lost from the point.

So because the goalie played bad Cozens is excused from pushing people who should be pushed? Play to the whistle. 110% effort. All out. All thise thing don’t apply because Ullmark was having a bad game? Josh Norris woild of been battling rhat guy in front of the net and the opposition played wouldn’t of scored the easiest goal of his season 3 feet from the goal line with a player on his back like he did standing shoulder to shoulder with Cozens, to me that’s inexcusable in a playoff race to be in your own blue paint with zero will of tenacity.

His awareness is the worst among our top 12 forwards. He just goes to sleep sometimes during shifts and stops playing

Off season trade - Cozens + 1 round pick for Barzal
Not against him but, we cant achieve success with that type second line C ( with 7 M cap space)

Someone said in the GDT last night he might be out of shape and I agree with that. At least that’s what it looks like watching him, he seems to not have enough jump to chase pucks now that the adrenaline has worn off. I don’t think it’s an effort thing either.

Anyway, not really expecting much to close out the season/playoffs, though hopefully he can regain his earlier form. I’ll worry if he still looks like this next season though.

So he’s been out of the shape his whole career? His level of effort or perceived level of effort has been an issue his whole career

He’s a big guy that doesnt like serious contact and doesn’t really want to get anywhere quickly.

I think when you listen to some of the stuff Staios and Green have talked about this year, you can see they put a large focus on conditioning. Staios has even mentioned several times that they ask their players to follow the process even on off days to ensure they’re ready for the next game. So they’re constantly preaching about diet, lifestyle, conditioning all the time - who knows if they’re doing that to the same extent in Buffalo.

So yeah, I do think it’s possible that without accountability, Cozens does not do enough in the off-season or take care of himself enough in the regular season that it impacts his ability to play at the highest level he can. I’d bet that a lot of losing culture teams have issues with this kind of stuff.

I don’t think it explains everything. But like Batherson I don’t think Cozens is the same player if he’s not using his size effectively. I also don’t know that this is actually the issue. It’s just a thought I had, then someone else said it too. He legitimately looks like he cannot fully keep up.

We saw how long it took our players to shake the bad habits and start playing the right way after years of clusterf***ness. Cozens just came from a similar situation Buffalo, he's not going to have it all figured out after 10 or whatever games here.

Only 13 games with his new team. Needs many more before chemistry can be established. Too soon to give a grade. Needs to work on his defensive play to cut down on GA and get the +/- on the right + side.

I think you're being a bit much honestly. You have something negative to say about this entire team, a lot the time. Cozens has some things he needs to work on, but he isn't a lost cause. He has been very physical and added some instant chemistry to our line-up. He will do well here in Ottawa as he gets accustomed to playing for an actual playoff team.

Guys, we moved Josh Norris's contract. Just let that sink in. A contract that was easily one of the ten toughest to move in the entire NHL due to his injury history, and our GM managed to get a guy who can hold down our second line centre spot, is in the lineup every night, is fairly young, and on a contract that while not great is at least not awful. That is an absolute masterclass by Staios. Pick apart Cozens's game all you like, and maybe you'll make some good points, but the fact that we were able to move on from an injury prone player who will likely finish his career on Robidas Island and get a useful contributor in return is huge. Where is Norris right now? Oh right he's hurt....again! It's OK, though - Darren Dreger says that it is important that they take the time to get him "right" (for the seventh time in his career.) Norris is a great dude and I wish it wasn't this way but pro sports is a cruel business, and the fact is that we had to move on from him in order to move our team forward...

I think it is far too early to say which team did best in the Norris - Cozens trade. There were reasons why each team made the trade. Only time will tell which team won.
