Thoughts on our goalie coach, should he stay or should he go. Pretty much all the goalies he coached for the Oilers have either got worse under his training other than Smith.

I'm curious what others feel.

Fire for sure for me. Seems like the goalies do worse as time goes on. That includes time here. It includes other goaltenders like Hart and Jarry, who he works on with other teams. Smith had to hire his own goaltending coach (which I doubt is that uncommon). Obviously we dont know what happens in the background but the results speak for themselves to me. Hire someone with a successful track record.

Will a New Partner Help Mike Smith?

Smith worked with Adam Francilia, who is a consultant with the Sharks but is allowed to freelance outside the Sharks. He sure helped Smith last offseason but makes me wonder what the hell happened to Martin Jones. Maybe he didn't utilize Francilia?

Easiest poll I have ever come across on these boards (besides McDavid vs Matthews poll ;) )

Has never played the game at a high level. Constantly our goalies have mental focus issues and cant get prepared at the beginning of the game. Doubt Schwartz can provide any tips in this regard, cause he never lived it. Constantly our goalies come here and are decent then progressively get worse. Don’t even talk about improving, Schwartz has never helped improve any of our goalies. The glaring issues Kosko had in his game from day 1 are still there to this day.

Yes, fire Schwartz already. Nothing against the guy, but this is how it goes in a result oriented business and Schwartz has had plenty of time.

As a results based business, we would need tangible stats to look at to properly assess his effectiveness as a goalie coach.
Just to keep it a fair evaluation from a fan point of view

- results of previous oiler coaches to compare his stats to
- results of potential replacements
- what are the stats of the goalies before and after training with Schwartz
- who are the goalie coaches that are head and shoulders better in developing NHL goal tenders (proven record of successful graduation to consistent NHL starts) that are lining up to try take that position from Schwartz

Frederic Chabot was fired by the Oilers and went to Minnesota, where he seems to have fixed Talbot and also got a few good years out of Dubnyk. Of course, I think he was also here for some of the DoD years.

I don't think anyone here knows enough about what our goalie coach does or doesn't do to express an opinion on this fairly.
He is paid to coach the goalies, what else is there to know.
If the team sucks the coach gets fired. All except the goalie coach. I find this odd.

as someone who has coached multiple high level goaltenders including the collegiate and WHL I have no idea how he has kept his job. the goalies either dont respond or react to his teachings or they do and his methods and teachings are trash. either way he is an ineffective coach.

Literally could stop 2/3 of the top corner glove hand goals on koskinen if he would hold his glove 1-2 " closer to the shooters.

Interesting. Would love to hear more from your perspective as a goalie coach.

I've been proven wrong. One person here has the knowledge to critique, and I would love to hear more as well.

They should hire you, IMO

I sub out the goalie coaching with the older kids now because i had the realization that because i dont have the professional experience i wasnt qualified to offer guidance at that level. but its not a coincidence that a goalie like dubnyk who struggled here terribly (and in mtl, nash phx as well) but then got to minnesota and became a rock. it wasnt some magic coaching, they allowed him to limit his movement and play more of a blocking style than an athletic style. Goalies over 6'3 - 6'4 and especially ones that are 6'7 should use minimal movements. They literally cover 75% of the net when in their full butterfly. Coming out 6-10" out of the crease makes that number mid 80s%. It can be harder for big goalies to track the puck because of their size (opposite of a Saros who can peak around the hips and legs of other players while still staying in a reactionary ready position) so they should be top of the crease to let the shots hit them. the more big goalies move the more holes they create, especially down low. If i was koskinens coach i would be working exclusively on rebound reactions and use of the glove hand.

when i mentioned holding his glove out further from his body i would encourage anyone to watch pekke rinne in a shootout. as the player gets closer to the net he brings his glove hand out and almost palm down to prevent any player from going roof on him.
