I expected to dislike it. I've never really cared for the Bene Gesserit and I wasn't eager for another series about space witches and acolytes. The lackluster reviews were pretty discouraging, as well. I ended up not hating the first episode, though, and I actually genuinely enjoyed the second. I daresay that I'm liking the series so far.
I'm glad that the sisters are a lot more human and less creepy than they're portrayed in the original novels and movies. Also, I was pleasantly surprised that they're only half of the story, while the other half is about the Emperor's court and political games. It does feel a bit like Game of Thrones, which I think is fine because I read that G.R.R. Martin was influenced by Dune.
I was afraid that I'd have trouble following along, but I haven't really. My understanding isn't 100%, but I'm not at all confused about what's going on. There are a lot of names, but characters are often just referred to by title or description (ex. Emperor, princess, swordmaster) and, even when not, it's usually not hard to put a face to them by the context of the conversation.
I don't have many issues with the acting. Some of the younger actors do feel weaker than the rest and a little too "CW pretty," but I wouldn't say that they're much worse than Cristin Cole in House of the Dragon and they have the least amount of screen time, so it hasn't bothered me too much so far.
The production quality is fantastic and at the level of other top HBO shows. The visuals, especially, are impressive. As a sci-fi fan, I'm loving how it looks.
If you're struggling through the first episode, try to stick it out because the hook doesn't come until the very end and then the second episode is much better, IMO.
