Colorado makes a ton of sense.

The Avs only trade chips for a trade like this (other than 1st's, Ritchie, Gulyayev) are:

2025 NYR 2nd
2025 COL 4th
2025 VAN 4th

Not having a 3rd round pick until 2028 means the Avs would have to hope Anaheim can be enticed with a couple of 4th rounders and/or a fringe prospect, or use the NYR 2nd.

The NYR 2nd is projecting as a high 2nd though so it might be too rich here unless there's a lesser pick or something coming back.

The Avs would most likely also need 50% retained as part of the deal.

Hes been really solid in Anaheim... i think any team looking to add to their bottom pairing(someone that can move up a bit if injuries happen) should be asking.

We traded a 4th to get him, i imagine were hoping to get back a 2nd, not sure if hell get that... just depends on the market.

If he's in the same state he was when he left the Pens, he's no longer capable of logging top pair minutes but would be a really solid #5 for a contender.

#5 on the depth chart on a good team is the exact right spot for him. He can give you steady top 4 minutes on any given night if needed, but you bring him in to lead your third pair or balance/solidify your bottom two pairs as "top four depth".

Big body, can log minutes, never gets running around trying to be anything more than a defender and has Cup winning experience - I think someone will give up a 2nd to rent that, especially with some retention. Worse Dmen have brought in first rounders but it shouldn't be expected

That feels so much better than relying on Middleton to play important minutes (though the Avs clearly like him) or trotting out black holes like CdH and Kylington.

Bonus is Dumoulin would be a nice add to the PK and in certain playoff situations can take some load off of Girard. Actually love the fit to be honest, for a rental.

I'm not too keen on Norris as a Ducks fan who follows the Sens a bit as well. 8M for five more years, one more year before NTC kicks in - and the injury issues are a pretty big concern. The Ducks could use his scoring ability but otherwise the fit really isn't there. Anaheim already have a lot of left shot forwards who naturally fit at center.

Rather spend that cap space and a few more mil to go after one of those huge fish in this UFA pond

Canucks should be interested.

With the current state of our ‘D’ and the fact he’s an ex-Pen with connections to our current management, I’d think there’s a decent chance we see him wearing a Canucks uniform soon.

My guess is Anaheim will want a 3rd from us though. I’d do the 4th Anaheim had to trade to get him in the first place.

But they can probably get a higher 4th than ours, and I’m not thrilled about spending a 3rd on him for half a season…

Given he is pending UFA and will be 34 to start next season I dont think Ducks going with "Not hanging up but make it really good" is best strategy on this type of player

I’m going to make the assumption that if he said he’d be willing to re-sign that they wouldn’t be selling, but it’s possible that they are measuring the value of trading him vs the value of having some team success. A 5th doesn’t really move the needle much if the team continues to win, then let him walk, for instance.

I think that Norris has negative value and nobody will take him without the Senators retaining or taking back cap+term.

Gibson is overpaid based on his play over the last few years, but he has less term than Norris and a lower cap hit.

The Senators are very clearly going to need a #2 goalie who they can trust to play 40 games a year. Ullmark has rarely played more than that and is now facing injuries.

They also need a goalie right now, and nobody reasonable is available. With Tkachuk's NMC kicking in this season, it is very important that they make the playoffs. Gibson is overpaid, but dumping Norris subsidizes that overpayment. It's not the same as straight up taking a 6.4M 1B goalie when you're dumping an 8M questionable 2C, let alone an 8M 2C who has significantly more term than that goalie.

Gibson is also a more dynamic asset. If he goes to Ottawa and plays above average hockey, he only has 2 years left after this season. If they get cold feet about having such an expensive tandem, or if Ullmark is looking solid, there is a chance they could flip that contract to a different team. The Norris contract is going to be a lot more difficult to move.

They basically need a goalie and a D right now to save the season.
