Speculation: Ducks prospect Henry Thrun will not be signing with the team

It became news today that he would not be signing with the Ducks. He may only want to sign with Boston, considering he would have likely gotten time on the Ducks this year. The fact he is the Captain of Harvard and Boston born leads me to believe he wants to stay local.

But what could the Ducks get by trading him? He has potential, a very high IQ, and some good physicality. Only concern is his skating is a bit lack luster. I feel he should be comparable in value to Jack McBain, who returned a 2nd last year, although circumstances could cause values to shift. What do you think Henry Thrun is worth?

All kidding aside, Pittsburgh has one of the best, if not THEE best, track records of signing these NCAA guys and getting them on the NHL roster.

ZAR, DOC, CDS, Marino, Sheary. Maniscalco and St. Ivany in the minors recently.
If you are a ufa ncaa player best to always sign with teams who have a track record of developing guys from the A into the nhl. Versus go to teams that have an opening and poor track record of player development.

Pitt’s has a strong track record of helping guys make and stay in the nhl that require some time on the A.

Those would be the types of teams I’d lean towards.

Boston had a track record of giving college guys the old “we will play you a game to burn a year” deal. For a team with few prospects and a LD group that outside of Lindholm will all be gone after next season it would make sense for all parties.

Depends on how open Thrun is to his teams options. Fox had to return for another season so NYR went and made the deal and we’re wise to do it.

McBain has 11 points in 54 games with AZ.

If Thrun only wants to sign with Bos or NYR for example I don’t think you’d get much from another team if they can’t get him signed. He needs to do a 2 year elc as he will be 22 in March. So he benefits by signing and burning an elc year.

But really depends on how much time he needs in the A. If he does then he’s also best served looking for a team that has that track record of player development.

Nathan Smith could have also gone ufa but was included in a deal with AZ and signed with them and is currently on their A club with just 10 nhl games this season. So, can’t just look at only the nhl openings. That teams ahl club will also factor in unless you are confident about walking into the nhl from Ncaa.

Wonder if he wants to go to the big market teams, cup contender or if he has 1 specific team he wants

Not just Boston every team in the league applies this “strategy“ from what I know.

so does he still have 1 more season at Harvard until he technically becomes a UFA? hes basically just letting Anaheim know in advance so they can work on a deal?

Realistically he might be looking for a team where he could compete for an NHL spot sooner rather than later. I know many fans don't like players when they go this route but I think we could understand if you're about to graduate from college and you have a choice between a job that will most likely pay you 80K versus another job where you could make 900K.

We saw last year that Jack McBain declined to sign in Minnesota but agreed to sign in Arizona. It wasn't because the Coyotes were contenders or McBain had Coyote pajamas growing up. Arizona simply had NHL roster spots available. He liked the idea of making 925K with Arizona than probably riding the buses in Iowa while making 80K.

If he just wants to sign with a specific team I guess it is what it is.

If he’s worried about competition on the ducks, then his confidence is questionable. Pretty blank slate starting in anaheim

a 4th round pick not the end of the world but think the nhl should copy other sports and make players declare for the draft. Would take all this nonsense out

I mean you never know but Thrun will be highly sought. McBain returned a 2nd last year. Thrun is a better prospect IMO. But I think teams also value this draft more.

Maybe award a compensatory pick one round later than you drafted the guy if an NCAA guy goes the UFA route after being offered a standard ELC by the drafting team. If a team drafts a guy out of Russia or Harvard they likely get them at a lower pick than they would if they played CHL. Losing that guy is a risk that probably led to the player falling. I don't think you can declare for the draft at 18 and then play NCAA? I don't want to hold back the player but if the drafting team offers him a contract and the player says no a compensatory pick isn't unreasonable to me. If I am a GM no way I draft a kid going to Harvard without a vetting interview or two first.
