News Article: Drury signs multi-year extension

Why? He worked his way up through the ranks with the Rangers. Isn’t that the reason nobody likes Messier? He wants to be handed a job.

I’d say you’re also a tad biased against him.

Not saying i want messier as coach or Gm, prefer him as president, but Messier brought a cup to NY, all Drury has ever brought this organization is pain.

Do I agree with everything Drury has done to date? No. I also have decisions I wish I could have a do-over on.

My wish has actually been granted - during this abomination of a season I wanted changes, drastic as they may, to please change the culture and team identity. Given Drury's track record so far, he is cold as ice in player transactions.

I'm looking forward to the offseason, and just really hope we keep our young core intact. (or most of it)

Cold as ice??? He gave Igor and Mika both full ntc.

He gets the summer to move out Kreider, Z and Panarin. Maybe Soucy too. If the new season comes along and I'm watching the same vets suck up all the ice, and just suck, then I gotta cut bait. I want to watch young players try hard and either succeed or fail. Create a team of speed and aggressive checking. I don't need to keep seeing vets and mercs float and fail. I've seen that one before. I didn't like it the first 10 times. I don't like it now.

Can you name one player he's brought in that displays this magical combination of speed and aggression?

Brian Cashman is grossly incompetent. The Yankees develop hitters like the Rangers develop forwards and they haven't been able to win despite tripping over a top 15ish talent in the history of the sport.

I'm glad Dolan envisions being that except without Aaron Judge. It's gonna be great.
Surely locking up the goalie for $92m gives us the punchers chance we need!

Dolan said Drury reminds him of Brian Cashman. He is here to stay. The question is how do we get an elite player? Brady-Matthews etc. That is how you win the cup.
Am I the only one who sees the irony in you saying the way you win the cup is to (checks notes) get two players who have never actually won the cup?

I really don’t have a problem with this at the moment, with that being said you hope he learns from past mistakes.
People are definitely overreacting. Yes he's made 2 bad trades but he's been fine for the most part, and he knows the problem with the team and is going to address it, he started last summer getting rid of the garbage and will continue this summer.

Because we had great success with Barclay Goodrow, who turned out to be a martyr instead? Sorry, but i have to rebut here. There's no reason those two OP mentioned can't win a Cup just because they haven't yet

He's made some seriously un-forgivable trades but I actually think him getting rid of Trouba and Goodrow was the right move.

The problem unfortunately was that the room didn't like it. Well...tough titties. You guys had 3 kicks at the can and weren't good enough to win. Trouba can't play anymore and Goodrow sucks. Intangibles are great but you have to be better at hockey than the other team. Trouba may as well have been wearing a Panthers jersey.

We'll see what happens this off-season. Zibanejad is going nowhere. I don't think Kreider is either. They can't possibly have worse years than they did this year. Drury needs to have a come to Jesus moment with those guys and hash it out.

His biggest challenge will be reloading this horrific defense corps. That should be his focus.

Figure out how to get Mitch Marner. Yes, that probably means Kreider has to go. Fine with that. Need guys in their prime to win a cup. Marner is perfect Panarin replacement.

I feel like this organization needs a complete reset.

First: Every player they draft needs to start in Hartford. Every single one. Make it an organizational norm instead of a perceived slight. The good ones are going to go there and dominate and will be up with the big club shortly. The ones who balk have just let you know that they are going to be a problem. Better yet, if they ever take the time to interview any of these kids prior to drafting, tell them that this is how the New York Rangers do things. If they catch an attitude right then, you have a key point of information.

Second thing is that they need to normalize that all players take the bridge deal off their ELC. You do this because it allows the team to fit the top end talent on the roster. You do this because it keeps the young players hungry and they don't show up to the rink like they have already crossed the finish line when they haven't accomplished shit. See Lafreniere, Alexis.

Third, a prospect has to be told that every single thing you get here will be earned, Nobody, from a #1 OA to an undrafted free agent, will walk in here with the keys to the city, I feel like that's where this all went wrong with this last rebuild. Lias was the highest pick we'd had in years. I am sure they poured it on heavy when they walked him around. What the hell happened to him down in Hartford that broke him? Then Kravtsov came and they told him the same thing. Meanwhile there's no room on the roster. Then the shiny new toy Kakko shows up. At least he's on the roster. But what about Kravtsov? You pumped his head full of dreams you haven't given him the chance to make come true. Oh, we do it again when we finally get the big prize in Laf. He bumps everyone down even further. If you can show me another time in NHL history that a team got #2 and #1 OA back to back but didn't give either one of them any special teams time I would love to see it. But you can't tell the kid he's the king of New York on draft day and treat him like a walk on in camp. Kakko should have started in Hartford. Laf should have started in Hartford. Make all players go down there and prove to you that they are too good for that league. The next time they put on a Rangers sweater, they have the confidence that they belong in the NHL.

Whoever they decide to run this bench has to be one of those transformational guys. The team has to be in his image. There are certain transformational guys who, once you bring them in, nobody questions It's a short list. Torts. Tocchet, Quenneville. Then you surround him with the best X/O guys out there. That's the only way i could even fathom the inevitible Messier question because even though he has coached zero games in the time we have moved on from three coaches, there are still people who think he is somehow the answer.

I feel like there is a weird circular problem with Panarin/Marner.

You can't have both. The main obstacle with getting Marner is to unload Panarin. One problem unloading Panarin is that anyone interesting in Panarin could have Marner for free. Another problem with unloading Panarin is that he can block the move. If you get too creative, Marner looks the way we treat even the best UFA's here and decides to go somewhere else.

Yes, I have. And if they behaved that way, I'd suggest that this may not be the best fit for you. If they think it's is, then get to work. If not, there the door.

Silly question
The point was to have a line of communication open so you dont end up in that situation.

Too add, Drury brought probably one of the most remembered quotes from a Rangers player. It's worse than anything Mika has said, and I'm not a Mika fan at all.

I’m not anti-messier. I just find it interesting that people say Drury was handed the job when he clearly worked his way up.

The way you win the cup is through draft and player development.

We have never been able to do it, and the only Cup we have in our lifetimes was made possible through the drafting and player development of the Edmonton Oilers.

In a cap league there is simply no equal to having meaningful contribution from players that outweighs their cap hit. You cannot win in a cap league paying all players commensurate to their value, because the better the player the more cap he absorbs and leaves less room to fill out the roster. The sure way to lose is to pay bottom six players top six money because you can't develop your own.

You win by either sucking so bad that you get the top picks to increase your chances or having the best scouts in the business.

We have allowed our scouting department to go through the motions for decades. They can pick goalies in the bottom half of the draft though. To pull Henrik and Igor from where they did is crazy. But they need to get career scouts who are all about it, not old players who use it as a way to keep their lifestyle and go one road trips on the company dime. How are you going to have an organization that preaches accountability when you allow layup jobs to an "old boys" club?

He’s Sathers protege.

That’s why I thought he would have a near infinite leash

Besides fans getting overly emotional his resume wasn’t really fire able after missing the playoffs 1 time in 4 seasons. Across the league there are guys who haven’t made the playoffs once in 5+ years who still have jobs. Firing Drury would not have been a positive for the organization. Especially when the veteran core is still yet to be broken up.
