I feel like this organization needs a complete reset.
First: Every player they draft needs to start in Hartford. Every single one. Make it an organizational norm instead of a perceived slight. The good ones are going to go there and dominate and will be up with the big club shortly. The ones who balk have just let you know that they are going to be a problem. Better yet, if they ever take the time to interview any of these kids prior to drafting, tell them that this is how the New York Rangers do things. If they catch an attitude right then, you have a key point of information.
Second thing is that they need to normalize that all players take the bridge deal off their ELC. You do this because it allows the team to fit the top end talent on the roster. You do this because it keeps the young players hungry and they don't show up to the rink like they have already crossed the finish line when they haven't accomplished shit. See Lafreniere, Alexis.
Third, a prospect has to be told that every single thing you get here will be earned, Nobody, from a #1 OA to an undrafted free agent, will walk in here with the keys to the city, I feel like that's where this all went wrong with this last rebuild. Lias was the highest pick we'd had in years. I am sure they poured it on heavy when they walked him around. What the hell happened to him down in Hartford that broke him? Then Kravtsov came and they told him the same thing. Meanwhile there's no room on the roster. Then the shiny new toy Kakko shows up. At least he's on the roster. But what about Kravtsov? You pumped his head full of dreams you haven't given him the chance to make come true. Oh, we do it again when we finally get the big prize in Laf. He bumps everyone down even further. If you can show me another time in NHL history that a team got #2 and #1 OA back to back but didn't give either one of them any special teams time I would love to see it. But you can't tell the kid he's the king of New York on draft day and treat him like a walk on in camp. Kakko should have started in Hartford. Laf should have started in Hartford. Make all players go down there and prove to you that they are too good for that league. The next time they put on a Rangers sweater, they have the confidence that they belong in the NHL.
Whoever they decide to run this bench has to be one of those transformational guys. The team has to be in his image. There are certain transformational guys who, once you bring them in, nobody questions It's a short list. Torts. Tocchet, Quenneville. Then you surround him with the best X/O guys out there. That's the only way i could even fathom the inevitible Messier question because even though he has coached zero games in the time we have moved on from three coaches, there are still people who think he is somehow the answer.
