News Article: Drury signs multi-year extension

I mean on the one hand, fair enough, I don't know exactly what Drury gets credit for in his prior roles.

I know he has never had a hockey ops role outside of the NYR org. I know he GMed the Wolfpack to their usual .500 or worse seasons and publicly humiliated a 19 year old Kravtsov in front of his team.

I know he is collectively replacing Gorton and JD. JD who had previously been the President of 2 NHL franchises.

Gorton whose resume before becoming the Rangers GM was putting together the Bruins roster that was one of the best teams in the league for a decade or so after he left - the 2006 draft, trading Raycroft for Rask, and signing Savard and Chara.

So yea. I don't know exactly what Drury accomplished. But I can't see it being all that impressive relative to the two individuals he replaced, and his track record to date hasn't done much to cause a change in opinion. Call me crazy but for what should be one of the premier jobs in the entire NHL, I would hope the NYR would set their sights higher.
Feels like you are overstating Gorton's virtues.

Do you need a Little League World Series Champion in your camp like winners do, or don't you?

I mean I literally just listed things that occurred when he was the interim GM. I’m sure he leaned on his staff, and the Bruins no doubt must have had excellent amateur and pro scouts. But you can’t take the bullet points off Gorton’s resume.
I've listened to his interview on some pod or other after Dolan gave him the slip. He told how he came to the Broons as a media intern.. Funny I don't remember him talking about those bullet points at all. Maybe he's just modest like that.

Do I agree with everything Drury has done to date? No. I also have decisions I wish I could have a do-over on.

My wish has actually been granted - during this abomination of a season I wanted changes, drastic as they may, to please change the culture and team identity. Given Drury's track record so far, he is cold as ice in player transactions.

I'm looking forward to the offseason, and just really hope we keep our young core intact. (or most of it)

Dolan said Drury reminds him of Brian Cashman. He is here to stay. The question is how do we get an elite player? Brady-Matthews etc. That is how you win the cup.

Yep, for example if a player seems too much of an enigmatic character for his tastes. TRADE NOW!

Or if a player seems to be not up for it/ has an obvious attitude problem - give him a drubbing in front of the others. And when he comes back from the KHL totally unprepared for the reality of the NHL play him as much as possible so everyone and their dog knows he's no value.
Or sign a player who's not even NHL level out of no-one knows what considerations and then offload him for a tidy asset sum.

cold as ice. or just zero player appraisal skills. either or.

Reavo was a GG ask. Evidently helped with the workplace mood then. But extending him was on Drury.
Reeves helped the softest team in the league feel like they didn't have to be scared for a season. We went to the 6th game of the conference finals. Then we traded him for a 5th the next season. I think that worked out decently for us.

He's a bona fide player but we got the tail end of his career. He's cooked. He's been sat by his HC during the SC run previously. Not a good sign. Why extend him apart from the GG wishes? That was on Drury.

Extending him brought a draft pick back in trade.

Do you think the likelihood would be, then, to let Pittsburgh take the 2025 1st? If Drury's idea is to fix the locker room and likely move out some bigger names, the possible volatility could lead to a higher draft pick in 2026

I certainly hope so in the event we don't win a lottery pick (which thankfully we dont have to decide til after the lottery)

Accomplished exactly nothing to get the job, made far more bad moves than good on the job, and now gets an extension and a vote of confidence. Clearly a great politician, I'll give him that.
Self perceiving strong man for the sheep to blindly follow is all the rage in the US right now.

Oh really. Is it Brady’s career 0-2 record in the playoffs or Matthews one career 2nd round appearance that exemplifies that.

Brian Cashman is grossly incompetent. The Yankees develop hitters like the Rangers develop forwards and they haven't been able to win despite tripping over a top 15ish talent in the history of the sport.

I'm glad Dolan envisions being that except without Aaron Judge. It's gonna be great.
