News Article: Drury signs multi-year extension

Rod Brind'Amour spent half of his 21-year long career with the Hurricanes, captained them to a Stanley cup win, joined the team as an Assistant Coach immediately upon his retirement as a player and is eventually rewarded with the head coaching job.

Chris Drury spent the majority of his career with the Avalanche and the Sabres, came to New York as a mercenary, stole a ton of money from the organization by being thoroughly mediocre on the ice and by continuing to collect a paycheck when he could no longer play, f***ed off for 4 years after retiring as a player, and is eventually rewarded with the dual jobs of President and General Manager.

You. Can't. Make. This. Shit. Up.
Have you ever sat at a table with VPs & your immediate boss?

If they fish & you don't, you understand this scenario very well.

I wasn’t in the camp of wanting everybody out. For me the simple fix was to be rid of Drury who I really dislike.

However, I now think we need to get rid of everyone else. We can’t have the crap we had this year again and if Drury is gonna stay that means a big chunk of the roster must go.

I can’t see everybody just getting over the last year, they had a whole season to do it and it wasn’t happening.

So, brand new team come October please.

not sure what you're on about
I’ll say it all again slowly

Despite inheriting Trouba there were a lot of things Drury could have done with Trouba to push him to waive his NMC earlier and more importantly mitigate his detrimental effects on their ability to win a Stanley Cup (directives to coaching to play him less, bringing in an actual good top 4 RD that would take his minutes, bringing in a coach that wouldn’t think he is a top 4 D, etc).

Instead, and this really is the main takeaway, Drury did the complete opposite. They named him captain which in no world did they have to do. For years two Drury-hired coaches let Trouba run around doing whatever tf he wanted for 20 minutes a game with PP2. Countless playoff games thrown culminating in last years ECF where like half the Panthers goals came with Trouba on the ice.

It took until this season for him to see a slight decrease in his ice time. No shit it ruffled feathers when Drury tried to rip the bandaid off this year after treating this guy like royalty for so long. We’ve seen that Drury is willing to be cutthroat and is an asshole and douche to everyone. If he wanted Trouba off this team he would’ve taken measures to accomplish that a long time ago. But in typical Drury fashion it took him like 10x as long as the average fan to realize he sucks and it costed the team.

Best case scenario......We see a purge of the betas on this team, eat a few sh*t sandwiches with buyouts or lob-sided trades, and re-create a team similar to the Black and Blueshirts brand. We do this the same way we did it 15 years ago.....Lean on a star goalie, bring in defensemen that throw the body and block shots, promote from within, and hit on a few low-risk UFAs and reclamation projects.

Worst case scenario: Most players on this roster come back and do not waive their NMCs or NTCs (which is within their right). We deal with rhe same issues plaguing this team for the past 4-5 years.

The truth is probably somewhere in the middle. I think this team needs to completely reinvent itself with JT Miller and Cuylle amongst the foundation of that team. Berard, Othmann, and Perreault should be up full time. Maybe we see Sykora, Roobreck, and/or Noah Laba up with the big club for a little bit.

The inevitable downside is Drury will succumb to his fixation on trading a 3rd round pick or Zac Jones for someone like Dylan McILraith or Jeff Petry.

I dont think Drury's an especially good GM, but firing him would've meant giving in to the players (again). People complain about the fact that this is Drury's third coach hiring, but this is at least the 3rd coach the core has quit on, 4th for some even. I think Dolan is finally done with that, and we'll see where this takes us
Do you think the likelihood would be, then, to let Pittsburgh take the 2025 1st? If Drury's idea is to fix the locker room and likely move out some bigger names, the possible volatility could lead to a higher draft pick in 2026

Now Drury can ruin the team for even longer. Terrible trades and signings this year. We basically have the same defense next year with the exception of Dehaan. To many #6-7 d-men playing as a top pair thanks to Drury and his bad trade and extensions. Trades away heart and soul guys just to make us a softer team. Has players hating him. Yes let’s sign him for more years

I mean in the end this whole thing boils down to one question.

Do you need a Little League World Series Champion in your camp like winners do, or don't you?

Dolan knows the answer.

We have absolutely no idea what he did or didn’t achieve in those roles, i.e., what specific goals he and more upper management had in place for him.

I mean on the one hand, fair enough, I don't know exactly what Drury gets credit for in his prior roles.

I know he has never had a hockey ops role outside of the NYR org. I know he GMed the Wolfpack to their usual .500 or worse seasons and publicly humiliated a 19 year old Kravtsov in front of his team.

I know he is collectively replacing Gorton and JD. JD who had previously been the President of 2 NHL franchises.

Gorton whose resume before becoming the Rangers GM was putting together the Bruins roster that was one of the best teams in the league for a decade or so after he left - the 2006 draft, trading Raycroft for Rask, and signing Savard and Chara.

So yea. I don't know exactly what Drury accomplished. But I can't see it being all that impressive relative to the two individuals he replaced, and his track record to date hasn't done much to cause a change in opinion. Call me crazy but for what should be one of the premier jobs in the entire NHL, I would hope the NYR would set their sights higher.
