Kings News: Holland officially GM

Sucks its just another guy like many other GMs and coaches that just merry go around the league for decades, was hoping for someone new however I am just glad it is someone new to us.

I want to see them win a cup again, of course but ultimately I just watch for entertainment, hopefully this spices things up a bit with some trades or change in direction... anything but status quo. I live too far away to go to any games so they arent getting any of my money anyway.
 
I asked my question "what his first move will be" because often a new GM's 1st move is a statement piece.

I'm hoping that 1st move doesn't suck all the Cap space out of the room. Which is GMH's M.O.

Unfortunately, they think there close, so probably will entertain trading him. Maybe they see if they can get Marners rights for lower tier prospect or Moore or wait till July 1st, of course it depends if he stays.

I am wondering who assistant Gm will be, if it's his son, maybe that prevents Dad from completely destroying the prospect pool we do have. I am interested in presser to see if he comes across as that he's here for only the Kings or if he is concerned about whole franchise ie; prospects, development etc.
 
The directive has already been made, and Friedman has said it repeatedly this week in that Holland is coming here to win a Cup, and that's what Luc said is their goal. So at least they've made that clear, however, depending on Kopitar to be your top center and Doughty as your top defenseman in 2025-26 isn't going to get them there.

I imagine that the Kings are going to be aggressive in free agency and add another dynamic forward and a top 3-4 defenseman, hopefully in addition to getting Gavrikov re-signed, though I wouldn't lose any sleep if they filled up the blueline with two upgrades over one Gavrikov.

Friedman also mentioned in his latest podcast that the plan is for a younger assistant GM to be hired to eventually be his successor, which likely means Holland probably is going to be here for around three seasons as the head honcho.

I know we've had discussions and disagreements in the past, but as it's mostly been in the context of Turcotte, I may have had an incomplete argument.

I don't think the WJC replaces months of scouting. But it still holds value in showcasing a player in a desired role in a best versus best tournament.

With Turcotte, him being buried in a lower role at Wisconsin didn't show how he'd play in a top-6 role. He was a puck hound, and it showed his instincts on how to play, since tournaments have a lot less preparation as in the season.

We also saw it with Byfield, but in the opposite context. In Sudbury, as the guy, he usually commanded the ice and played with speed and purpose. In the WJC, when put in a bottom 6 role, his confidence and uncertainty was there. Once he played with better linemates and put in a role with a bigger purpose to score, he played more assertively.

Obviously the more data and observations you have, the better, and no tournament gives you enough time and data to see everything. Mostly because a whole season doesn't give you enough.

But there's certainly value in seeing how players respond in a setting where they have to play on instincts.

Hopefully getting rid of Kopitar and Doughty for a 1st and a top 6 player or a good prospect if someone is willing. I can see a team that is a contender with some cap space willing to take on Doughty and Kopitar because of their names alone.

Slap on 50% retain on each of them since their contracts expire like in two seasons.

This team doesn’t need Kopitar and Doughty since they’re so far away from contention, however they can use some draft restocking.


Honestly I’d trade Byfield and Clarke too and just start fresh. I don’t see either of these guys being good enough to retool or rebuild around.

On the assistant Gm aspect, I hope he elevates Yannetti to assistant Gm, if not in know way should they screw around with him in the role he's in. He's been loyal and done one hell of a job and I feel it's the development part that needs to be seriously looked at.
Why not have multiple assistant Gms like other teams.
Yannetti cube one who can still oversee the Draft scouting etc..
Maybe another to oversee Development departments
Etc..

The NHL is in a great spot right now with the on-ice product, I can't wait for the games to start everyday. I just wish more people in a lot of the country would get behind the sport.

A couple of years ago it was Makar putting on the cape, this year it's Rantanen, who will probably be opposing the Oilers two big-stars in the conference finals. The Oilers are playing an exciting brand of hockey with a nice mix of skill and physicality and Dallas is just loaded, that is going to be a fun series if both teams finish the job. At least there is going to be great hockey to watch while our beloved Kings continue to wander in the woods.

It makes me think about the days of Quick in 2012 and Doughty in 2014, and how much fun it was to watch. Hopefully one day soon the Kings will have players like this again and can be playing games well into May and June.

I know a lot of people here get really emotionally invested in prospects. My advice would be, for the next two years you should adopt my way of thinking. Just view these guys as assets and nothing more, because that is exactly how Ken Holland is going to view them.

Holland has zero connection to any of these Blake picks, and will not think twice about moving young players away if he thinks the return will help the team win in the next two years. My guess is this was a point of conflict between Blake and Robitaille, and Luc was the win-at-all-costs now. F the future guy.

I'd actually be very surprised if we don't make it through the summer without one or two of Clarke, Greentree, Spence, Turcotte, Laferriere or one of the young goalies moved on from, for more immediate reinforcements. And you know if it is indeed Kopi's last year and they are anywhere close to the playoffs, they are going to be all-in at the deadline.

I actually like what I'm reading. A couple things that stand out:
- he calls his dad 'Ken'. Not 'Dad' or 'my dad.' It's a direct mindset of wanting to go his own path, nor does he cling to his past relationships. It's the inpersonal and objectivity he values in how he talks and thinks
- he didn't take advantage of his connections to get an edge. He seems to value ethics.
- he didn't run to work for Detroit and work as an overpowered fan of the team. He turned down working with his dad there, but agreed to work with him in Edmonton.

Now, that's very different from Lombardi, who strongly believed in family and close ties to understand the people he works with. But it's also more showing of a spine, where maybe he wouldn't have let Luc bully him into trading for PLD.

He also sounds very thoughtful about explaining his thoughts and process. So in a way he doesn't shut up like Lombardi either. I think it's a lawyer thing :sarcasm:

I really dug his views and analysis of drafting teens and how other sports analyze draft prospects. Like you said, he actually does seem thoughtful, and he also is mindful of using analytics.

At face value, fans will look at it as another nepo hire, but he seems to be forging his own path and wouldn't necessarily be a bad hire by the Kings.

hey if he's a long-term GM, with a great pedigree and mentoring, I could get on board with it.

Still would far prefer Janko, but there's a lot to like about Brad.

Well you know… we were right there again, eh? We like the Greentree kid — real good player, good head on his shoulder, but he's just a baby you know, won't be here for a few years. But listen, Me and Kenny, we’re tryin’ to bring the Stanley Cup home to LA for Kopi and Dewy. And we think Anders Lee, he might be that last piece of the puzzle, y’know?
