Player Discussion Drake Batherson (RW) - Part II

Sens might be looking to trade Batherson. Apparently Staios considered trading Batherson at the trade deadline but Norris went instead.

"Whether Batherson stays or goes, Garrioch reports the Senators are looking to add a proven top-six forward and a right-shot defenceman to boost their roster this summer.

The need on defence in Ottawa, Garrioch writes, comes as veteran Nick Jensen is believed to have undergone hip surgery last month which is likely to sideline him into the regular season."

There were rumours from Friedman after it was announced that Ottawa and Buffalo were discussing a Cozens deal that the holdup was that Staios was trying to acquire Peterka as well.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Batherson was going the other way in that hypothetical.

Peterka and Batherson had almost identical stats last season.

Peterka is 4 years younger and has shown progress each season in the NHL. I also really like Batherson, he gets 68 points a year consistently and he is almost never injured.

I am not sure what I would have thought about that trade, Batherson for Peterka.

For what it's worth, I found this article on a supposed trade rumor of Peterka going to Ottawa:

Here is the actual rumored trade:

This article dates back to late January, well before the actual trade deadline.
Interesting that it includes JBD, who ended up being in the Norris/Cozens deal.

Just don't see why Buffalo would want more draft picks & continue to prolong their never-ending "rebuild".
You would think that it make more sense to get an established young player (like Bath) in return.

If it’s not for Robertson or Peterka, I don’t want it.
You aren’t wrong, but I’d much rather Peterka. Robertson is currently better but Peterka is still relatively young. Plus I think we’d have an easier time extending a friend and countryman in Stützle Vs a guy from Cali who probably wants to play in the states and will surely want a fat contract.

Keep Batherson & get rid of Zetterlund, add Sogaard & the 2025 1st & then add Jensen or Perron to even out the money. Jensen is hurt so he could be out, don't think you can trade injured guys getting surgery. Although why not if it's likely they return or it's just to balance out the money anyway? They could end up trading him at the TDL anyway & get something for him they could use.

I highly doubt those were the two they were considering in the same deal. Batherson has tremendous value while Norris likely has negative. Batherson deal doesnt make sense unless its for another scoring winger who is better or is younger with more control.

That wasn’t Friedman. It was a troll account “quoting” Friedman.

There’s always a number of websites that just speculate and say maybe this or that will happen. Not sure if people actually read the articles. But, there’s going to be lots of this kind of thing happening which will result in robust discussion in here like it's actually based on something more substantial.

Maybe Peterka will keep on improving and get to that elite superstar status like Timmy..
Either way, Robertson is only 2 years older and will be in his prime years when he does ask for that 11+M extension. You are getting 40-40 guy who’s consistently put up 80+ points the last 4 seasons. A player his calibre is something we lack. When right now I think we have a bunch of Peterka-like players

Why do we NEED to get rid of Sogaard? When he's sent to the AHL, he'll have zero impact on the salary cap, as he makes less than $1.1 million. I'm not opposed to dumping him, as I don't see much upside to the player, but it's certainly not a need.

His situation is the same as MacEwen's the last couple years, just send him to the AHL and his cap hit goes away.

Owner still has to pay him and he’s making the equivalent of ~10 AHL players.

He probably needs a change of scenery & if he still has some value he might work in a package for a better player who helps this team improve. If they want to acquire a good top six player it will likely cost a 1st, a good prospect & a player. I don't want to trade Batherson because I doubt we can replace his passing ability especially given that Giroux another good passer is leaving at some point. Zetterlund is the guy I think we need to move on from the sooner the better & use those assets to improve the team with a good top six player.

What owner wants to pay an NHL salary for a player to play in the minors? This is real money. I would trade MacEwan for McCaron who is a better 4th line enforcer, can play centre & we need a 4th line centre, can play on the PK & can add some pts from time to time.

Soogard isnt going to learn how to track a puck because he gets a change of scenery. He is done, he does not have it.

I dont think they are trading Batherson or should trade batherson unless there is a team pressed against the cap that will overpay for his services because they are a contender and his contract is so good.

That makes sense; however, you don't always get what you want and often have to take what you can get if the player wants out and will not sign a contract with you. I find the nhltradeerumours site to be unreliable.

Given that Bernard-Docker was traded for Cozens in the Norris trade, what would we have to add to the 2025 first round pick and 2026 third round pick to acquire Peterka?

Zetterlund?

I think Batherson would be too much given that we are already giving them a first round pick in 2025. I doubt we want to trade Batherson for Peterka as we would still need a top 6F.

We didn't need to get rid of MacEwen, it's the cost of doing business, sometimes a prospect doesn't pan out.
True but if we don't want him on the NHL roster, then it seems likely/possible that we would also want to trade him for "nothing" or a late round draft pick rather than retain him at his NHL salary. Unless they view him as having some value as a depth backup for a tough physical forward.
