Draisaitl vs Makar

I think i take the elite #1C over the dynamic defenceman here. You can sort of get by with lesser defencemen, if you have a guy like Draisaitl up front. I'm not sure the opposite is strictly true. I don't think Makar is able to be as effective if he doesn't have that dynamic offensive talent in front of him.

Makar is the Avs MVP outplaying everyone. He takes over games no matter who gets thrown on the ice with him.

His post said "the support from the back end", unless you think Nurse, Bouchard and Broberg are all very good players which would be very off brand on HF.


As for the topic, as an oil fan, I'd take Makar.

Great defensmen are great regardless of who they play with. Would Paul Coffey be considered less of a d man if he didn’t play on stacked red wing and oilers teams? Same with Bourque, Pronger , Karlsson and Lidstrom. D men are great in the same way forwards are great. It’s because of who they are not because who they play with. Makar is just as productive for a d man as Draisitl is a forward but Makar can also defend which is something lacking from Draisitls over all game. Drai is great, I think Makar is more valuable

As a franchise D, Cale also plays 5-10 minutes more every game. If Draisatl really was Edmonton’s franchise 1C, there’d be an argument. But we all know this is leading into the McDavid/Makar poll this summer.

Yes. Exactly. Demonstrating that Draisaitl can be effective, without any real top quality help from the blueline to do what he does.

Whereas Makar...well, he's working with a lot more up front than Draisaitl is behind him in Edmonton with a fairly embarrassing blueline.


Unless the argument here is..."Makar is on a better team, so he's better"...i'm not sure what the point is.

The point is that you said that you can sort of get by with lesser defenseman if you have a guy like Draisaitl up front. Well... the Oilers have Mcdavid and Draisaitl and I’d argue it’s not exactly working out in well.

Pretty close to equal players IMO so it comes down to do you need a #1 Center or #1 D. Or whether you believe its better to start a team with #1 D or #1 center.

Really hard choice, I think one would have an easier time building a Stanley Cup winner around Draisaitl than Makar. But that’s just me. Both franchise changing players, can’t go wrong either way.
