Unless Drai is willing to sign long-term on a team-friendly deal, no team would eat that Nurse contract. I don't see it happening.

It’s likely a bad idea to diminish Draisaitl’s trade value by including Nurse in the trade. It’s better to maximize Draisaitl’s trade value by trading him alone. Then, down the road, maybe the Oilers have the opportunity to trade Nurse for another bad contract but where the player might be a better fit with the Oilers.

Admittedly, the idea to swap Nurse for another bad contract is somewhat problematic in that most contracts like this have NMC/NTCs.
Nurse would be tradeable on his own with 3 million retained.

That is MUCH more preferable than using Draisaitl as a way to dump Nurse off a cliff.

Dumb teams make these kinds of moves. Keep Draisaitl for another playoff run and get $8.5M of cap space when he leaves. That's worth more an any throw-ins.

Verheage is a good supporting player.
Bennett is a good supporting player.

Leon Draisaitl would immediately become the best center on Florida if he joined. Yes, better than Barkov
Eh, really hard to say when Draisaitl is a completely different player when he’s not stapled to McDavid.

When was the last time a team traded their 2nd best player in order to dump a bad contract?

It's a preposterous idea.

Because no team is stupid enough to package Leon Draisaitl to dump a contract.

Especially not when said contract, retained even 25% quickly becomes a bog standard FA deal (probably better than half of what were signed a week ago).

And nobody on Earth is trading for Leon Draisaitl with a year to go on his contract as a rental nor would Edmonton be predisposed to do that either.

Because if they’re dealing him… they are expecting a ludicrous return. So, they wouldn’t be dealing him as a rental (unless it got to the TDL without any movement on a contract with them trying).
If you’re trading him it’s because he’s not re-signing, it’s not because you expect a ludicrous return. Draisaitl is still the type of player you don’t let walk to FA for nothing.

If you think you're going to win a cup, you do. You'd treat him as a rental that doesn't cost you anything.

The 3rd or 4th best forward in the league on a good deal (for now) isn’t what it’ll cost to dump Nurse.

I’d say you have to include Cooley and a 1st.

Depends what’s out there for a trade.

One good thing Edmonton has going for them is that even if he did ask for a trade I don’t see it being a locker room distraction, all the top guys are pretty good friends. Keeping him for one last kick at the can and letting him walk wouldn’t be a terrible thing.

Of course it would depend whats out there for a trade. But the premise of this thread to use him to dump Nurse for a player the Oilers basically have no real use for essentially sabotages any chance the team would have at winning a cup.

Draisaitl isn't going to ask for a trade. He wants to win a cup here as badly as anyone and recognizes where the team is at in terms of its progression. The Oilers are going to be one of the top 2 or 3 odds on favourites to win the cup this upcoming season. He might not re-sign here at the end of year, at this point we don't know, but he's not going to ask to leave before he plays the season out.

Probably already been said, but no need to thank Drai's value, if the Oilers are trading him.

From an ownership prospective… they want to be a legitimate franchise in Utah after being a complete joke in Arizona. They cut Leon Draisaitl the biggest check in hockey history and he’s there for a long time.

It helps them by giving them a 100 point C to go along with the Cooley or Keller they don’t trade
Can only offer 7 years. Oilers can offer 8.

So nope.

Considering the Oilers were one game away from winning the cup, I'd say they should just take the risk and run it back with Drai for his final contract year. They likely won't be able to afford his next contract though.

Somebody will definitely trade for his "rights" at the end of next season and then sign him to a monster contract. But yeah, the Oilers really have no reason to trade him this season unless somebody gives them an offer they can't refuse.
