I don’t know if this player simply was forgotten or whatever, but I’ve watched this player slide, in my estimation, for like 8 rounds, and is one of the most important players in NFL history. The Philadelphia Bell selects DT/MLB Bill George.

George started his career and all-pro run at what was then called middle guard (what we’d call the nose tackle of a 5-man D-line), right across from the center, running A-gaps, and dropping back into coverage, all of this as the signal caller. In 1957, the Bears moved him off the line permanently, and at that point revolutionized defenses and gave birth to the 4-3 defense as a base package, simultaneously establishing the legacy and tradition of the Bears middle linebacker. It seems that time has sort of diminished his role in the mystique, but there are some who saw him as the most feared or meanest of any Chicago Bear.

Footage has been hard to come by, but you can search a long form documentary called ‘tradition of bears defense’ on YouTube.

1937: "The largest vote (for all-pro team) this year went to Joe Stydahar..." [received 43 points out of a possible 50 from the league's coaches]
1938: "Stydahar...best tackle in the business"
1940: "Joe Stydahar is miles the best tackle in pro ball."
1945: "Stydahar rated the greatest left tackle in pro football has been honorably discharged from the navy..." (his career was paused in 1943, 1944, and part of 1945 to serve as a lieutenant in WWII)
1967: "Stydahar was an All-League tackle on our championship teams in the 1940's - as great a two-way linemen as I've ever seen."
