He dropped out, or was cut?

Anyone know the story?

25 games at college, 4 points.

Be interested to know the why.

With the Terriers, Piccinich was trapped in a deep lineup and forced back into the shutdown offense position he had once played in the USHL. Where he'd begun to develop an effective game with the Phantoms as both a penalty killer and a power play specialist in his draft year, the 6 foot winger was given limited minutes in sheltered situations only.

With the option to head to the Knights, though, Piccinich knows that he can carve out a role for himself as a mid-line forward with more of a defensively responsible game than many OHL players can offer. He's got that scoring upside he developed in his draft season, which will give him enough all around value in London and the experience he gained in the NCAA to hopefully finish rounding out his game and succeed at the NHL level one day.

Could this guy be a useful player for us one day or is he just going to London without much expectations.

Does anyone have any background on why the Leafs chose him last year? He is an extremely nondescript player. He went a round earlier than Nolan Vesey and objectively Vesey has far more to show.

Anything on J.J.?

I have a friend whose a big BU fan (Brother went there for something) and apparently he just wasn't used... Like at all. Probably going to do well in London based on his supposed skill set and age

So what's the skill-set?

I have a friend whose a big BU friend (Sister went there for something) and apparently he was the captain bench warmer. Often times Eichel took his seat after JJ had warmed it up.

He had a good draft year in the USHL, showed he could score and skate and kill penalties. It just seems like he chose the wrong university to go to.

From the bits and pieces i've gathered he's expected to be a two-way second line winger for London. Not a great point producer by any means, he probably tops out as a Glencross type player. Realistically, he's a long shot prospect.

IIRC Piccinich was a red-shirted freshman (fairly common to happen) and didn't get much time this year. The expectation was that next year he'd get a much larger role with players like Eichel moving on

If he can find a way to play top-6 for for the Knights he should be able to pick up some big points. He would most likely be playing with two of Marner, Dvorak, Tkachuk, or Jones.

Looks like it's confirmed. Piccinich will join Marner and the Knights.

Could see JJ and Marner on the same line. That'd be interesting.

Since Piccinich was drafted out of the US could he go back for an OA year without us having to sign him to retain his rights? What about an AHL contract?

I wonder if this change see's him climb up our prospect rankings going into next off-season, its a big opportunity.

Was he a buried gem or a justified scrub? Up to him now.

I watched him play a few times, and he got ice time just didnt do anything with it. I cant see this move as being a big deal.

Mostly I wonder why he was drafted so high, ranked #135 for NA players and not much to show statistically - seems like someone we could have gotten in the 5/6 round region

Have to admit, was very underwhelmed when we selected this guy in last year's draft. Just seemed like better players were available at this slot and someone we could have got later on with a lower pick. Cant really comment on his level of play in the OHL, but his numbers so far are very impressive.
