NHL Draft lottery III - Bruins locked into 5th before ping pong balls.

My take is you always wait until the end of the season.

It's foolish to go off lists that are outdated. Things change as you can see.

As I said before, the only reason Central Scouting releases it's list in mid April is because GM's want the list by the end of the season.

I have never, and will never understand monthly rankings.
Makes total sense. Are you planning to share a list? In DOM we trust.

psychos like me need something to read on the deck

The likely scenario is we drop a spot to 6. Schaefer, Misa, Hagens, Frondell, Martone or Desnoyers are six players. Don’t f-ck it up. No reaching allowed.

People saying we should pass on Martone’s combo of finish, size and nastiness is a head scratcher for me. I’d gladly take him there.

Back in November Craig Button (also cautiously known as Buttons the Clown at times) had Martone ranked first. If we get him at 6 you run with that.

This is interesting 🤔

Every year multiple teams in the top 10 take players ranked a few spots higher by consensus in mocks. I expect this year will be no different.

Schaefer and Misa look likely to go in top two. But as for the next three, I think it’s anyone’s guess. I think the only guy I’d be truly surprised to make it thru that group is Hagens. But I’d be willing to bet good money that either he, Desnoyers or Frondell will be there at 6. Some team is going to surprise a bit they always do.
Don't we know that :sarcasm::laugh:

If someone had told me at the beginning of the year the Bruins could be picking at one of #1, 2, 3, 5, 6, or 7th overall with their own pick I would have said they are crazy.
But I also would be very excited by the opportunity to select a very good player and hopefully infuse some much needed high-end talent into the lineup.

My oh my how things and the lineup changed as the Bruins struggled mightily throughout the season.
We were teased for a while the last month with hopes of sitting 4th overall going into the lottery and our mouths began to water with picking no lower than 6th.
Sitting currently 5th is a little trickier, with a possibility of picking as low as 7th, which if happens could be selecting after the higher viewed talent at the top of this draft.

Our final picking place rests in the fate of the lottery balls.
Just a reminder to myself that these are 18 year old kids, and what looks good today could look vastly different in 10 years.
So much room still for growth and development.
One just never knows.

Once we know our final picking place we can analyze which player(s) may be left on the board after other teams selections and immediate needs.
Then try to project out which remaining available player(s) best fit Boston's team needs, both immediately and in 5 - 10 years.
Hopefully, they will pick the best player to build around and their projections are accurate.

Whatever happens with how this plays out the potential is exciting, filled with discussion and debate, and mostly fun.
This is only the beginning of what should prove to be a very interesting and potentially franchise shaping summer and next few seasons for Boston.
Exciting times.

Yes, predicting the future continues to be a difficult task.

How many "if you told me's" did we get after the 2022-23 regular season.

That said, it is exiting to have a pick this high in the draft.

If it’s between OBrien and Martone at 6, you have to pause a second on blindly taking a C, right?
IMO NHL front offices shouldn't do anything blindly let alone blindly pick a player because of the position they play. Yes, we need a center for the future but would you, hypothetically, rather use this very valuable pick on a good middle 6 center or a potentially great top line winger? Player comps tend to be silly, but, using Pronman's comps, would you rather have Jason Robertson (Martone), Elias Lindholm (Desnoyers), or Mika Zibanejad (Frondell)? Sounds like you would take either of the centers just because of the position they play...which I would disagree with in this made up scenario. No one knows what these prospects will become or how teams ultimately have them ranked but if the Bruins do have a winger (or defenseman for that matter) clearly ranked ahead of a center, then I hope they take the player they think will make the most impact in the NHL.
No one knows what the NHL roster will look like in 2, 3, 5+ years. If the Bruins sign Eichel next year, suddenly our need for a top center isn't so pressing, is it? Even if they don't sign Eichel, if Martone takes off and his stock increases, then you're better positioned to trade him for a center down the line if needed. You draft the best player you can and figure the rest out later.

PS: Spare me the "hoW CaN yOu tRuSt SwEenEy's rAnKinGs? ThEy aRe gOnNa pIcK sOmE bUm" responses. The draft is a crapshoot and the Bruins have done just fine (if not better than fine) over the last several years considering where they were picking. This narrative is played out and adds nothing to the discussion. (This isn't directed at wintersej but rather all the other folks repeatedly making these comments in pretty much every Bruin prospect thread that was created in the last 10 years).

I feel like teams passing on Martone is going to end up like teams passing on the Tkachuk brothers in 2016 and 18.
Martone is a solid hockey player.
Being from Brampton, where his junior team plays, I have watched him play many games.
He reminds me of Brady and Matthew T as a high comp, Corey Perry as the low comp.
Playing 178 games in the OHL is a bonus, he has lots of junior experience.
He is NHL ready and would welcome him coming to the Bruins.
Misa has scored at a .64 goals per game, Martone at .52.

watched Spokane spank my Royals last night but Reschny with another 4 pt evening. With the team getting thoroughly spanked entering the 3rd, all the kid did was continue to bust his ass and put up 1 G , 2 A in the third to try and bring the troops back into it, think he now has 24/25 pts in 9 games

Looks like he has snuck back into the first round to say the least.

The “comp” thing is so interesting. Button’s comps were Perry or a Tkachuk.

Three of those guys are/were great hockey players. Jonsson as a whiff, but if you look at that draft, it was terrible, 9/10 picks right after him were also whiffs. Hamill, well, that was just a bad one.
Maybe I should have been more specific: What a great Bruins legacy. Seguin, Hamilton and Kessel each only lasted three seasons in a Bruins jersey. We seem to have a tradition of not hanging onto our top-10 ranked draftees. So why is everyone getting their knickers in a knot over whether we draft at the 5th or 6th spot? If history is any guide, it won't matter much in a three or four years. lol
