Draft day: move up, move down or stand pat?

Easy answer would be to stand pat....unless there's a big unexpected faller that comes our way. Shouldn't happen so stand pat and you will have quality AND quantity.....and a goalie!

Nah we're fine where we are. The only way I'd consider moving up would be if we could ship off extra forward depth we don't necessarily need (one of Gionta, Bourque, Desharnais)

I would stay Pat.

But if my name is Richard then i'd stay Richard.

But i dont know if i'd stay Fred if my name is Fred tho... i'd really have to think that one over.

...slooow day huh?

I think you have your list and if there's someone you think is really special, you move up if you can. I'd be surprised if they keep all those picks. I can see moving a 2nd and 3rd for a better 2nd or something. They've done that before and gotten guys before (Tinordi, for example) they had an eye on.

I think when you have that many picks you're going to look at organizational needs and although this is a deep draft and you're bound to get 6 good prospects, you might be able to really address some needs by moving up to grab with you really want, as opposed to the best of what's left.

Needs...
Big, gritty forwards
High end scorers
Big, tough, PMD
Goaltenders

I don't get how you guys can say if we should stand pat or trade up without even knowing how the draft is going to unfold... It's all about our prospects list.

Let's say the prospect ranked #5 on our list is still available at #20 (unlikely... but you'll get my point). I'm pretty sure they'll consider trying to move up in order to get him. It all depends on how it unfolds again.

if Timmins tells bergevin he should move up a few spots to grab x player,Marc will.If Trevor tells him to stick with our current picks,Marc will.

I agree, and I don't think there's much else to add to your point. It just depends. The Habs didn't have to trade up to get Collberg. They safely traded down to get their man in Fischer (despite how the pick turned out, the draft day strategy worked). They've got chips to play with this year.

move up no matter what is my answer.

We have a stupid amount of picks and could easily use some of them to move up considerably.

another top 5 pick would be nice.

Teams in the top 5 aren't going to drop down 20 spots no matter how many picks you give up.

What WTK said.

But I think I get what you're saying, if you mean: package a bunch of picks to make sure the Habs draft a guy who's very high on their list. As in, a scenario where a player ranked by consensus in the 10-15 range happens to be 5 on Timmins' list, and a team picking in that range is willing to trade down. Sure, spend the picks, and give Timmins and his staff the benefit of the doubt that the Habs ended up with a top 5 prospect in the draft but fewer 2nd round picks.

Actually, it could be an interesting discussion. Timmins' list, by what we've learned from fuzzy pictures taken by RDS on draft day, tends to have certain prospects ranked significantly higher than the consensus published scouting reports. Some examples include Galchenyuk supposedly at 1st overall, McDonagh at 7th, Leblanc at 10th or even higher. Never mind Pacioretty and his 2nd rounders.

So, what prospects from this year's draft are good candidates to rank much higher on Timmins' list than what we could expect from going by the consensus rankings?

Some people in this thread don't appreciate the value of a top pick, especially when all you are offering is draft picks in return. Trading up for Drouin... never going to happen.

Depends where we finish in the standings, depends what's left... I wouldn't mind moving down and get an additionnal pick in the process...

I think there will be more movement than usually concerning draft position this year. With the short season some good teams played way below average. They may covet NHL ready players more than a 2 year development plan.

Still, i dont see the habs getting up any higher than about #15. That being said, if there is a player they really covet around that point and giving up a 2nd is what it takes, go for it. We have that luxury this year with our quantity of picks.
