Draft day: move up, move down or stand pat?

Remember: we have six picks in the first three rounds. A first, three 2nd-rounders, two of which come from non-playoff teams, and two 3rd-rounders.

Assume the best we can pick at is ~#20 if the Habs stood pat in the first round on draft day. That is, if we didn't somehow make the ECF/SCF. Then, should we move up, move down or stay pat in the first round?

Personally I want Drouin so I would see if I could somehow swing our (hopefully late 1st) a 2nd (ours) and a 3rd for him... That still gives us 4 picks in top 90... And Drouin...
However, I am probably alone in that.

Drouin? Are you sure moving up from #20 to #7-10 would cost us only one 2nd-rounder and one 3rd-rounder this year around? In the KHL maybe but not in the NHL.

And even getting Drouin at #7-10 is pretty low... realistically, to even think about getting Drouin, we'll have to deal both early 2nds in two separate trades. Hypothetically:

Trade #1:

:habs

Winnipeg's first-rounder

:jets

Montreal's first-rounder
Nashville's second-rounder

Trade #2:

:habs

Philadelphia's first-rounder

:flyers

Winnipeg's first-rounder
Calgary's second-rounder

Even that may not net us Drouin.

Was there a trade that I didn't know about? We don't have Nashville's 1st rounder. We have their 2nd rd pick.

I voted for staying pat for two reasons.

1) Everyone and his monkey believe this to be a deep & strong draft so it'll cost dearly to move up. If you find a GM that thinks otherwise and is willing to trade at a deflated standard sure go ahead but I doubt MB will find A GM who thinks this is a bad draft year.

2) Timmins & his team of scouts are elite so give them as many opportunities as possible to do their thing.

It's too speculative a question. I don't see them moving back, they have plenty of picks, moving up depends if the player or players they want will make it.

In other words if they like 3 players at #25 and it gets to 21 or 22 and they are all still there, then no reason to trade up. If you get to #21 and 2/3 are gone then you look at maybe trading up 3-4 spots.

I'd do anything to get Drouin basically.

If the teams that could potentially pick him up need some nhl players i'd do it.

Our 1st, our lowest 2nd, plekanec, leblanc/beaulieu/kristo/wtv vs their 1st and maybe a C prospect.

But i'm sure it won't happen lol.

Haha wow no way!

wayyyy too much voting options, so much it's missing some obvious choices. I think we should move up no matter the situation as long as we can get a player that our scouting staff think it's worth the move. Quality over quantity. That being said, if we can't move up for a player that our scouting staff feels that it's worth it, well go BPA with all those picks and cross your fingers that they indeed develop into something worthy. Draft picks are massively overrated, especially on hfboards. You build teams with core players and most of those players are draft with high picks.

I would personally try to move up twice. Reasoning is that we have a lot of mid-talent players coming (Kristo, Beaulieu, Tinordi, Collberg), but we need more Galchenyuk type players.

I'd try to package our 1st and a 2nd to move up the 1st round, and possibly 3 other of our 6 picks to get another high 1st round pick. Or something similar, maybe package a prospect if required.

It would take more and I would offer more, I was just saying picks wise I would do those to get him

Is a draft day fire sale an option?

40 good games, 4 bad games, still 2nd in the east, and people are talking about a fire sale

could you at least wait and see what happens in the playoffs?

we need to stay pat. I don't want us to trade half of those picks for a middle tier first pick... since drafting players isnt a perfect science, having multiple 2nd picks instead of 1 middle tier 1st pick gives us better odds of drafting a player that might be good someday

I realize Drouin in the perfect mix of being both french, and a prospect so people will naturally covet him. But why would we compromise our depth for another small winger? Or do you guys want our top wingers after MaxPac to be Gallagher, Drouin, Colberg, and Kristo? If we are paying a premium to get a guy it should be because he fills a need, not because he speaks french.

Still, we cannot move up to #7-10 with only one trade.

if Timmins tells bergevin he should move up a few spots to grab x player,Marc will.If Trevor tells him to stick with our current picks,Marc will.

WE TRUST

I don't really feel we need to move up.

We have six picks in the first three rounds of what is considered a very strong draft. I trust Timmins with what we have and feel he can add six quality prospects to the system.

Forget about Drouin. We aren't moving into the top 5, just accept it. I get it, he's ridiculously good, he's vaguely like Giroux, and he's Quebecois, I'd love him on the Habs, but him being as good as he is ensures that the Habs aren't the only team interested, regardless of what language he speaks. One of the worst teams in the league aren't going to take Plekanec and 2nd round picks for him, sorry.

If we were capable of that, wouldn't it make more sense to go for Barkov or Mackinnon anyway, considering how obsessed everyone is here with our lack of size? Or for that matter, go for Zadorov, Ristolainen or Nurse considering how soft our back end is.

But realistically, if we move up, it'll be to the teens at best. I'd love to move up to get a Wennberg type, but I don't think we should be throwing away all our seconds considering the depth of this draft.

MB must go into the draft thinking to trade away not wanted players. It might take some hard decisions. Leblanc? Weber? Moen? Pateryn? White? or someone else. they just might bring the Habs a 2nd or a move up or a high 3rd. Give Timmons more picks and let him do more magic.

Very much agree. Sorry - top-five ain't happening.

I think Bergevin will take a shot at trading two 2nds (or something similar) for a higher 1st, but I'll be shocked if we get anything close to a top-10 pick, no matter who's thrown in.

A lot depends on players none of us know. If Timmins thinks there's gold among the top-35 we may be best to stand pat.
