I think a lot are overreacting to Podkolzin's performance at that tournament. He's been one of the best scouted players in his draft year. No one had the guy top 10, very few had him top 10, prior to this tournament. 11-20 range guy, in my opinion. Don't see dynamic ability to be a top 5 pick, especially considering he's a winger.

I don't think it's an overreaction, per say. I think that most never seen him play prior to this tournament and wow'd the majority. I think he'll digress against men this year, but you can tell the kid oozes potential. He should get a serious look in the KHL, but I think he spends a majority of the year in the VHL.

According to CapFriendly, Rangers already brought in one of the NCAA free agents who could sign with any team after August 15....

Dwyer Tschantz, who played with Cornell for 4 seasons and was a 7th round pick by the Blues in 2014, will be with the Maine Mariners of the ECHL.

Any guys there worth getting worked up over?

  • No, I do not rank Hughes #1. I've explained this many times already. Down to positional value. I don't think he has much of a chance of sticking at center. Great player, but if there are 1C's or 1D's in the draft, they will likely be more valuable NHL'ers than a winger.
  • Russian CHL forwards don't make my list. They are basically DND list, unless they are available late in the draft. The odds are against them, whether they are more talented than others or not.
  • I've included 9 Americans in the first round, and 18 in the first two rounds. The record for most Americans in a first round is 11. The record could be broken, although it'll be hard. Definitely looking like a great draft for the USA though. Canada, especially Western Canada, is really strong. Russia is looking a little weak because of the idiots. Sweden doesn't have the top end talent but I like the depth. Finland is looking average across the board. Czech Republic looks pretty weak.
  • Very strong center draft at the top. I think it levels off towards the middle of the first round. Defense is a little weak. Winger is decent, as is goalie.
  • I've included a Watch List that has 20 guys who just missed, and are mostly interchangeable with the bottom 5-10 on that list.

Hughes 3rd lol.You love being "that guy" dont you

Meh, he was spotty. There were times he took the game on his stick and others where he just coasted. I think USA's best player was Farinacci. Kid hustled every shift and was a force on both sides of the ice.
That's fair, and I thought he was their second best player. Those moments of brilliance were what caught my eye with Kaliyev, and I guess we have differing opinions on if he coasted or not. I didn't know much about Farinacci going into this tournament, so he was a pleasant surprise. His stats in prep hockey were very impressive last season.

Do you know what his plans are for the 18-19 year? Is he staying in prep hockey or going over to the USHL?

Post-Hlinka rankings should be taken with a grain of salt, especially if the only time these kids were viewed before the Hlinka was the 2017 under-17 worlds.

Spiridonov and Zaitsev had quiet Hlinka's but were excellent last season in the MHL. One tournament shouldn't trump an entire season of work. At least that's how I view things.

Newhook, Turcotte, Kakko, Lavoie and Zegras are going to be impossible to knock down after I rank them all in the top-10. Krebs needs to play the full season at center and it was a bit uncomfortable ranking him ahead of Newhook, who IMO has the biggest star potential of any of the Canadian-born centers who made the Hlinka team over him.

Hughes aside, I'd love for the Rangers to draft Newhook, Turcotte or Byram. But still a long way to go.

And the Cozens thing - Maybe it's me, but I'm not feeling it. Great attitude, smarts and work ethic, but he just doesn't peg me as a franchise, cornerstone, building-block type.

Essentially agree on all counts, with the exception being that I'm not quite sold on Lavoie yet.

I feel pretty set on my pre-season top 5 including Hughes, Kakko, Byram,Newhook and Turcotte.

It's the 6-10 spots that I am still trying to decide.

You love trying to disagree with my every post? Don’t you?

When I see I have a notification from you, I can be sure it’s something really bothersome. Maybe next time you’ll tell me where better I could place a period or comma.

Im sure im not the only person on here to disagree with you.I think your reasoning for Hughes dropping to 3rd isnt valid. You can absolutely feel it is,but there is evidence to dispute your reasoning why-and years of it. P.s if you let another posters replies to you bother you, grow a thicker skin.People are going to disagree with you, thats life.

Not sure. If I were him, I'd take the next step to the development program and then go to Harvard. Dexter is a phenomenal prep school, though.

It's still early on the year for Kaliyev. Opinions change

Dylan Cozens is a baseball player no need to draft him imo

I'm trying to figure out what the knock against him is. Great skater for his size, good in all zones, skilled stickhandler, produced more points last season than any CHL'er in his age group other than Lafreniere.

I'm not sold on Lavoie either. Not sure he'll stick at center, and his playmaking skills are questionable. I think he might be more of a complimentary power forward from the wing.

There are times I come away really impressed with his play, especially considering he was still a year or two away from being draft eligible.

But there were other times that I just didn't understand what he was thinking out there. It didn't just seem like inexperience, it was like he was out of step with what was going on within the game.

So that's something I am going to keep an eye on this season. I don't know if it's part of his growing process, or if it's a difference between him and some of the other perceived top players.

When we miss out on a top 5 pick and end up with Cozens, I am going to be thrilled.

Just from his highlight videos, he doesn't seem to have a good shot and he doesn't finish a lot of the plays on the video.

He was snakebitten at the Hlinka with his finishing. Still played very well, and is a better goal-scorer than most of the best centers in this draft.
