As of now, the Pens are drafting 9th, Rangers 11th, pending draft lottery results. Quit with the whining about the Pens winning down the stretch. Its over, its not changing and it doesnt need to be constantly brought up. If you cant control yourself youll be removed, you guys had the last few days to get it out of your system.

Order as of now:

If everyone stays put:

1. SJS - Schaeffer
2. CHI - Misa
3. NSH - Hagens
4. PHI - Martone
5. BOS - Desnoyers
6. SEA - Eklund
7. BUF - McQueen
8. ANA - Frondell
9. PIT - Jack O'Brien
10. NYI - Radim Mrtka

This changes if draft order changes.

What odds on getting the pick from the Rangers? Could see them bouncing back next year but also equally likely for another crap season.

Grier apparently stated the Sharks are willing to move their pick. I wonder if they end up picking #2 they offer it for a young and upcoming defenseman.

In his comments, he mentioned a specific trade where a team traded every pick in the draft for the single pick. I can't remember when, but I think the NYI offered that for someone.

I put this in the main boards, but they NEED Schaeffer. That is who they need moving forward. That group needs a young #1dman to grow with Mack, Eklund, Smith, etc. If they win the draft lottery, it will have to be a HUGE offer. I don't see it happening. If they get 2nd OV and they know 100% that whoever gets 1ov is taking Schaeffer, then MAYBE they can look at a deal around a young #1dman on Schaeffer's level with the other team wanting Misa. I suggested Buffalo and Owen Power being a potential base for that.

But honestly, every GM every year says "we'll listen to offers" and the trades RARELY happen.

I know thats the example he used. But if someone like the Sabres offers one of their defensemen, I am not sure he says no.

IF they can't get Schaeffer. I think Owen Power would be on the table given how much Buffalo needs a top end center. They keep Byram in that situation and supplement from there. But Misa-Norris-Krebs/McCloud down the middle, they can start to build something good. Especially if you can get a young guy like Benson and Peterka to mesh well with Misa. Leaves a Tuch-Norris-Thompson 1st/2nd line which would be heavy line to play against.

Youd think, but Buffalo is going to Buffalo. This draft feels like its going to be shaken up. Someone in the top 10 always reaches, there isnt a real consensus outside the top 3/4, etc.

First off I hope you're accurate here. But I just don't understand how or why McQueen is so high. His numbers are meh when you're looking at the top of the draft. Just over a point per game with a serious injury? I don't see it. What is so appealing about him? I cannot imagine a team thinking McQueen is the higher caliber prospect over O'Brien considering everything.

I just hope the team that's potentially reaching isn't the Pens.

I have faith in Clark though. Beyond Carolina and maybe a couple others I think we have the best staff we've had in 15-20 years. Likely top five in the league. Hopefully I don't regret that assertion.

I listen to McCagg, Scouching, and EP podcasts regularly. Everyone of them has said in the last month that NHL scouts are very skeptical of McQueen's health. I find it hard to believe a team would take a chance on him top 10 as well.

Will be interesting to see how the draft order shakes out. I think then you can start to see some semblance of who may go before our pick

Ok I am bored and ran one lotto sim. Here’s my mock draft until

SJ- Schaefer
BOS (up 3 slots)- Misa
CHI (down 1)- Frondell
NSH (down 1)- Martone
PHI (down 1)- Desnoyers
SEA- Smith
BUF- Hagens
Anaheim- Martin
PIT- ???

Bolded means I think they are a lock to go before our pick

I think Buffalo 100% takes Mrtka if he's available for them. Feel free to criticize them for drafting based on need rather than BPA, but he's basically exactly what Buffalo has been missing for years on their defense. What Mrtka projects to be is exactly what Dahlin needs in a partner, I can't see any way that they pass on him. That's also part of why I think they move Byram, Byram is so redundant on their defense that needs more size and defensive ability.

Without any changes from the lottery win, I'm still expecting the top-10 to look something like:

1. San Jose: Schaefer
2. Chicago: Misa
3. Nashville: Hagens
4. Philly: Desnoyers
5. Boston: Martone
6. Seattle: Frondell
7. Buffalo: Mrtka
8. Anaheim: O'Brien
9. Pittsburgh: Eklund
10. NYI: Bear (think they make an upside swing for a center here)

Exactly!

I never understood the fascination prior to the injury TBH. Now, I'm not as up to date on all these guys as I've been in the past, but still. If you have that type of injury it has to hurt your stock considerably. I doubt he's taken before 12th OA..

I dunno. The draft is deeper. Even McKenna lottery stuff aside, they could end up with a better player next year at 20 than they get at 11 this season.
They could also implode and be giving the Pens a top pick, thats my believe as to what will happen.

Opposite of O’Brien— The more I see Kindel the more I like. Give me this guy at 9 if Eklund isn’t there.
Why do you say that about Kindel? I haven't watched much of him. I can't imagine they would take him unless trading down which I wouldn't be opposed to. O'Brien looks more boom/bust to me the more I see of him. He almost never makes any play on puck with any pace. Scares me a lot and does look like Glass as a prospect. I worry Eklund might just end up being a safe Hagelin 2.0 type of middle six winger with less speed and better hands.

We've already discussed this a bunch, but I still feel like the Rangers will end up giving up their 2025 1st to the Penguins just because it would be criminally brazen to give up an unprotected 1st in a season where you finished like the Rangers did this year. The Rangers giving up an unprotected 2026 1st for Miller in 2025 feels a lot like if the Penguins would have given up an unprotected 2024 1st for Karlsson back in 2023. The Rangers didn't get any better after the Miller trade, just like the Penguins didn't get any better after the Karlsson trade.

Adding that on top of how weak the 2025 draft is, I think it makes the most sense for them to give up the 2025 pick. That doesn't mean they would do it, but I think not doing that would be completely absent minded of risk.

Yeah it's just a few clips, but I'm not seeing any sort of skating concerns here. I think there's a lack of top end speed but his stopping/starting and shiftiness all look good.

This clip starting at ~51 seconds showed him with some really nice explosiveness in his skating to break away on a 2 on 1. #15 has some super clunky looking skating but Kindel looked explosive there.

Re Eklund- agree with bolded being the concern but I kinda think that’s his floor. Good 3rd liner. But there’s definitely upside. I think if you are taking a guy who has hard tools to be a 1st line, number 1 W but compete/energy to be solid bottom 6er/3rd liner if you misjudged the offensive upside… that is ok at 9OA.

Re O’Brien. I agree

Re Kindel. I know consensus has him lower so you’d “trade down” in a perfect world but I don’t particularly care. He’s got skill and brain and does it on the move. Feet are always moving which is a huge green flag for me (why I like Eklund and dislike O’Brien) plus I think he’s anticipatory. I think the skating could absolutely hold him back but you could really unlock him if he cleaned it up.

So O’Brien- boom/bust but so much has to go right for him to boom imo. Add skating, pace, size, strength, move his feet more, harden up the shot, shoot more. Kindel? Just gotta skate better and get stronger. Just feels simpler to unlock his pro upside.
