Prospect Info: Draft 2025 - Waiting for the Draft Lotto

Tbh, now I've said it, I'd love a team to employ a strategy of only drafting guys they think'll be flashy scorers in junior and trading 90% of them before they turn pro. Look at Calen Addison. Was he actually a good draft pick? No. But did he have great trade value for a guy picked in the late 2nd.

I'd say they'd clean up before the rest of the NHL caught on but, well, Vegas kind of already did. And yeah, they gave away Nick Suzuki doing it which an oopsie, but you can't make an omelet without breaking some eggs.
Lol. Draft for who you think could make Team Canada at the WJC. Trade half, keep half.

If you got the eval right. It would probably be one of the best rebuilds ever haha.

FWIW, I was just checking out reddit on the Sullivan to NYR rumor, and apparently the same guy that said it's getting close (Mercogliano) also said the Rangers are likely to hand over their 1st to the Penguins this year because they view the draft next year as notably better.
Could be right, but man would be surprised considering Sullivan is a win-now move and it's their 100th season.

Rangers no matter have to hedge said bets here. No matter the thinking, no way they allow the Pens to have a lottery pick in 2026 as now it becomes really poor to not have a pick at the top of the draft. you never know as could be one of those years. Move the pick now and get it out of the way.

I don't know what the Rangers will do with the picks, but I know what I would do if I were them...give us this year's and move forward.

There is no way you can feel comfortable inside that NYR building knowing a team with our draft lottery history is holding your 1st in a year that has a clear franchise-changing player. Not to mention the overall depth of next year's draft vis-a-vis this year.

Seems like a no-brainer to me. Hopefully, their arrogance will convince them to make the wrong choice.

Sullivan is totally turning them around though despite showing zero evidence of being anything close to capable of doing so for going on a decade.

So watch out.
Well first of all, Sullivan is not even their coach yet. It's likely, but you never know. If they choose Sullivan and then Cooper becomes available...LOL to that whole scene.

I am completely unconvinced that Mike Sullivan can turn the Rangers around. I could see him turning around a more non-descript roster, but not convinced he can coach a team with high-end talent anymore.

I think Martin has a high floor and a ceiling as high as Eklund. Maybe O’Brien as well.
I would be cool with Martin. He checks a lot of boxes for us.

I don't dislike Martin but I think his upside is lower than Eklund's. Unless his offense pops more than I'm expecting, I think Martin will probably end up a crash and bang energy middle-6 center. I think a best case scenario with Martin is a smaller but faster Boone Jenner, which is a really damn good middle-6 center but a lower upside than Eklund's.

I could definitely see Eklund and Martin ending up 2 guys that have very similar NHL impacts, where Martin produces a bit less but playing center plus his physicality gives him an equal or larger NHL impact than Eklund. That said, I think Eklund's upside is higher if you go with him.

Dubas made a great point. coaches never are successful going from a champion to a dog and back to a SC contender. Sullivan had the greatest team player to cover things for him. Now hello to an older bunch of players who have never won anything.

NHL coaches almost never have enough job security to stay in the position that long. Takes years to go from contender, through a rebuild/re-tool, then back to contender. Most NHL coaches don't even have enough job security to go through one full phase. According to Seravelli, the average NHL coach only holds the position for 2 years and 3 months.

If we aren't getting a top offensive guy ala O'Brien, would love to see us go for Martin and Aitcheson at 9/11. That would be a huge change to the look of our prospect pool.

Feels like they've got 4C/6D floors and 2C/2D ceilings. That's a swing to take.

I would hope they don't make too many rash decisions on such a small tournament like the the U18s. The top scorer in the tournament is Ekberg, who has 9 goals and 16 points in 5 games. Meanwhile in the OHL, he had 45 points in 53 games and is ranked as the 178th rated NA skater by central scouting. Boumedienne is also lighting it up as well.

I'm not going to be mad if the Penguins get the Rangers 1st and they take Martin, but I would hope that the U18s don't have a huge say in it. None of Schaefer, Misa, Martone, Eklund or O'Brien are even playing in it.
It's less about the U-18s for me and more learning about how he plays. Seems very much a Bennett/prime Kunitz-type of competitor.

If they do hire a win-now coach in Sullivan, you have to think they'd be aware of the optics of keeping the 2025 pick because they're worried they'll be as bad or worse next year.

It would scream a lack of belief in the new coach.

I think a Sullivan hire would virtually guarantee they punt the pick to next year.

Maybe the pick we get this year just ends up being a Peyton Krebs we trade in a package for an Eichel.

Elias Pettersson, come on down!
