Whatever you do in life, NEVER EVER EVER count on Sullivan to do anything but work against the greater good. :D

Can Philly pass us in the standings if the stars are aligned?
If I am reading it correct, Philthy winning in regulation brings them to 7th and losing in regulation brings them to 4th in the lotto drawing. They should be benching everyone for this meaningless game.

Finished up the Brady Martin tape. I think the basement here is so high its on the first floor. Like there is no basement. He's a good skater, plays with energy, loves hitting. Bare minimum you get a bottom six energy guy. And the ceiling might have some high potential if he can get a little better with his decision making. Sometimes he dangles himself into some bad situations or right out of a play completely, but I'd rather that than someone who lacks the skill to work themselves into those situations to begin with. Engaged in all three zones, though. One thing that is super important to me is how much the actions of a player that doesn't have the puck change the scope or trajectory of a shift. That is Martin's specialty. My favorite shift in this mix is the one where he destroys both defensemen and then goes straight to the front of the net and there's no one there to cover him because he laid waste to all the people responsible for it.

Thanks for posting these. Will you be coming out with your own rankings list? Curious how you would rank the forwards you've reviewed based on their defensive aptitudes.

So what's the best possible situation for the final day of games? Pens lose in regulation, and the Sabres get at least one point? I don't think the Pens can jump the Flyers if I'm reading correctly, because of regulation wins. The 7th overall pick seems to be the best case scenario.
We also want the Rangers to lose in regulation and the Islanders to win in some fashion. If this happens, the Rangers pick will be #10 (before the draft lottery).

Here are our placement conditions based on tonight (7th - 9th picks)

Penguins Lose in Regulation:
9th: N/A
8th: Sabres lose in regulation
7th: Sabres lose in OT/SO OR win

Penguins Lose in OT/SO:
9th
: N/A
8th: Sabres lose in any fashion
7th: Sabres win in any fashion

Penguins win in regulation:
9th
: Guaranteed (Penguins win tiebreaker w Ducks on ROW)
8th: N/A
7th: N/A

Penguins win in OT/SO:
9th
: N/A
8th: Guaranteed (Penguins lose tiebreaker w Ducks on RW)
7th: N/A

In short, regulation win, we get 9th. Extra time win, we get 8th. Any loss, we get 8th or 7th depending on Sabres. We hold the regulation win tiebreaker with the Ducks, and they hold the Win

Martin is an interesting guy that I can definitely see being a surprising top-10 pick above someone like Eklund. I don't mean this in terms of play style, but he seems to be in the same category of Desnoyers as a really safe NHL bet while having the upside to end up a legit top-6 guy.

He seems like Kunitz if Kunitz was a center rather than a winger. The only question is whether he actually has the skill to hit that top-6 upside.

Can’t believe I’m going Empoleon mode (aka 180ing quickly) but starting to wonder if the vibe gets so bad they convey the pick this year.

Yeah, I am going to do an official top-40 before the draft. I actually have something I'm brewing for it at launch.

As far as defensive aptitudes goes, this is just off the top of my head based on the guy's I've watched so far without thinking about it too much:

1. McQueen (Seriously, I thought this was one of his strongest assets. Generates a ton of turnovers deep in his own end)
2. Martin
3. O'Brien
4. Spence
5. Desnoyers

Spence is a wing but he's all over the place in his own end.

Like I've said, I kept thinking the Rangers are going to rebound next year. But it seems like it's just going to get worse.

They'll probably just scapegoat Laviolette and not make any notable changes.

It's a weird conundrum. They're going to try to better, but we don't have any evidence to suggest that means anything. This year was supposedly their best attempt at trying to be better and look how it went. Looking forward to Rick Tocchet coaching J.T. Miller version 2.0.

I think any reasonable GM would give up the 2025 1st and keep the 2026 1st, unless the Rangers win the draft lottery. If the Rangers are the same or worse next year, they'll be able to keep an equal or higher pick in a better draft and actually properly start a retool, which I think they'd do if they have another shitty season. If they're better next year, they won't really care about trading the 1st for Miller and can use that 2026 1st as a trade chip to make the team better in the short term.

The problem is that the Rangers aren't exactly known to be a reasonable team, so who knows what they're going to do.

Depending on if we get the NYR pick I think Bear might be a bit of a sleeper pick. Kid has solid offensive tools but also plays a very high energy buzzsaw style game, could be a monster after some mentoring from Crosby.
