Prospect Info: Draft 2025: Is it too late to tank? Asking for a friend

I think we’re in good shape. Top 10 pick, a late 2nd, a bucket of 3rds. McGroarty, Pickering and Koivunen are knocking on the door. Blom, Murashov. A bunch of maybes like Harding, Pieniniemi, Broz, Pono, Fernstrom. 2 1sts, 3 2nds, 2 3rds next year.

I'd love to move up into the early 2nd round using one of those 3rds.

I’d imagine we can probably get a 2nd for Lizotte next year and maybe a 3rd with retention for Hayes.

I'd love to get top eight with our 1st this year if Buffalo passes us and or if PIT loses on thursday. If so that's a pretty big deal.
Fair but unless we win the draft lottery, it sounds like they are leaning O'Brien and I think he'll easily be there at 8/9/10

I would love to get O'Brien! Eklund or Desnoyers if they slip. Any one of those three and it would be a homerun IMO! Getting 8th though would almost assure us that's a likely outcome. 9th or 10th (if we get jumped in the lottery) would likely keep us out of that scenario. 8TH would be great!

It’s a hell of a lot better than Rutherford last years as penguins general manager.

One will slip down to the penguins with their pick. One team always picks a player who is to go mid first round and is picked earlier than projected and hopefully it’s the flyers.

Eklund and Potter or Kindel would be a nice little draft for us.

Pens need a center out of this. If Rangers pick is available as Rangers decide that they do not want to risk an unprotected lottery pick going to the Pens in 2026. O'Brien is my pick and then Martin if Rangers surrender said pick. I still think Dubas want more high end talent and will make moves at the draft to get that caliber of talent in the draft. He has picks to trade in 2026 to move up. Pens need a couple really good centers and go from there. Ekland is a physical winger and is not a typical Euro as to his play. If my wants are gone, he is a good get here.

The Pens don't need a specific position. They need the highest projected talent they can get imo (excluding McQueen f*** that guy I cannot be convinced otherwise lmao).

Martone, Hagens, Frondell, Desnoyers, O'Brien--doesn't really matter what position. This is like year one of what's likely gonna be a 5-7 year rebuild, since the first two years are mired by "Oh, but we can't deal X or Y cuz then who will Sid play with as this team hovers around bottom 5 in the league? :( " bullshit.

Maybe I'm just out of the loop, but I don't remember trade ups especially at the top of the draft and trade ups involving only draft picks.

I think people are missing the second we draft one of those players they become the best prospect we have in our system. Probably the best we’ve had since Staal.

With the Rangers winning yesterday, that pushes their pick down to #11 and will go to #12 if the Red Wings lose their next game. It seems like the Rangers pick can't realistically be lower than #12, it's possible they get to #13 but that would require Columbus to lose out (currently on a 4 game win streak) and NY to win their last game.

Either way, I think the hope should be that the pick comes in at #11 and the Rangers decide to give it to the Penguins even though it's top-13 protected.

The Wild traded up from #13 to #12 in the most-recent draft. It cost them an additional 3rd-Round pick in 2025.
Also, the Sharks traded up from #14 to #11. It cost them a 2024 2nd (pick #42).

This is what I'm hoping the Penguins do but in reverse. Get the Rangers pick at #11 or #12, and trade down to #15 or #16 to get an extra 2nd.

Using the current draft standings (so Penguins at #8 and NYR at #11), what I'd be hoping to do is something like #11 to Montreal for #15 (Calgary's 1st) and #40 (Penguins 2nd) and end up drafting something like this with their top-2 round picks:

#8: O'Brien
#15: Kindel
#40: Brzustewicz
#62: Hillstrom

That plus getting Hynninen in round 3 would make me really satisfied.

Ok, so it has happened but not anywhere near the top of the draft. Like a team trading from #7 to #4.
In the Cap Era, no. It happened in 1999, though.
The series of moves is somewhat complicated, so I'm just going to copy and paste from Wikipedia. These moves involved the top two picks in the draft:

  1. Vancouver's acquired first-round pick went to Atlanta as the result of a trade on June 26, 1999, that sent a first-round pick (# 2 overall) in the 1999 Entry Draft and a conditional third-round pick in the 2000 Entry Draft to Vancouver in exchange for this pick. Vancouver previously acquired this pick as the result of a trade on June 26, 1999, that sent a first-round pick (# 4 overall) and two third-round picks (# 75 & 88 overall) in the 1999 Entry Draft in exchange for this pick.
  2. Atlanta's first-round pick went to Vancouver as the result of a trade on June 26, 1997, that sent a first-round pick (# 1 overall) in the 1999 Entry Draft to Atlanta in exchange for a conditional third-round pick in the 2000 Entry Draft and this pick.
