Prospect Info: Draft 2025: Is it too late to tank? Asking for a friend

Yeah, I'm just expecting the Rangers to punt the pick to next year. They're not gonna trade this year's pick imo because it's a public admission that they're worried next year will be the same or worse. They're gonna try, in vain imo, to right the ship.

I think that Eklund and O'Brien strategy would probably be the Rangers handing over pick #11/12 and the Penguins trading up to #8/9 to get O'Brien.

The issue though is that Dubas hasn't done that with draft picks, he has traded down far more than he has traded up.

Entertaining the possibility (which I still think is really unlikely) I would maybe do the inverse and move up for Eklund, who I think could fall but other than that I don’t see the point. I think O’Brien is a comparable player to the rest of the guys in that range. It’ll cost a 2nd+ to move up 3 spots in the lottery.

Would rather just keep 2nd rounder, make a bunch of dart throws on day 2 of this draft and hope one becomes a player.

I'm really hoping the Rags give us the pick this year. It would suck to have had such a shit season to only have our pick in the 1st followed by the Caps 2nd that will end up being like a 3rd rounder... 2 players drafted this year close to the top 10 could also speed things up

Yeah I think ultimately If the Penguins do get the Rangers 1st, I think it's more likely they trade down with someone who wants to get McQueen than trade up.

If you believe Gurgs mentioning they really like Kindel and Boumedienne, I could see something like the Rangers 1st to Montreal for the Habs 1st and the Penguins 2nd back. Picks #11 (NYR 1st) for #16 (Habs 1st) and #39 (Penguins 2nd) is a dead even trade according to the draft pick value chart. Take Kindel at #16 and Boumedienne at #39 with those two picks.

Yes I would love to trade down in this class, unless an Eklund/Smith falls.

Like Cullen Potter/Kindel/Cootes prob go in the late teens/20s and I’m kinda failing to see how they’re in a diff tier than OB/Martin/Desnoyers.

I still love Hagens. Would be thrilled if he dropped. He’s obviously not the prospect people thought he was earlier, and will probably need another year with BC, but I still think with his speed he’s going to be a good player.

If we don't get the Rags 1st and can't find any deals for a 2nd or late first, surely they wouldn't take Kindel with their 1st...right? I mean, that would be negligent...right?

Good chance it will be #10. And for this hypothetical, let's say that it is. Drury asks Dubas what it would take for Penguins to absorb Kreider's contract as he is refusing any LTIRetirement. What are you asking for? I'm guessing at least one unprotected 1st.

Jesse said a few days ago that he keeps being told by different people that the Penguins absolutely love O'Brien. That's what I'm basing the thought that the Penguins will take him on.

I am by far from the most connected guy in the business but I'm happy to have made a lot of friends very close to the OHL in a variety of capacities. Multiple times over the last three weeks, one of them reaches out to me to tell me how much the Penguins love Jake O'Brien. Like clockwork. They've been omnipresent up there since the holidays.

This is what I'm basing my "the Penguins will draft O'Brien with their 1st" idea on.
 
I mean, we heard how much they loves Yager and they took him. I wanted Matthew Wood over him but oh well. I would be comfortable assuming that if they "like" JOB, they will take him unless there is a major fall.

Months ago Scouching said Clark will like O'Brien and Kindel. Never heard anything in regards to Boumedienne.
 
Yeah I'm only basing the Kindel and Boumedienne things on what Gurgs has said in here. Combining those rumors with Dubas' history of trading down to get more picks, I think it's a pretty reasonable prediction to make that he'll try to trade down with the Rangers 1st to get another late 1st/early 2nd to take some of these guys they're rumored to really like.

The Rangers 1st to Montreal for either the Calgary or Montreal 1st plus the Penguins 2nd is very even in value, as is the Rangers 1st to Philly for both the Colorado and Edmonton 1sts. That said, I think it's still unclear for how the weaker 2025 draft will impact the value of picks in terms of trading down.

Ya I think they use this years pick. I wouldn't be surprised if they traded it for help too.

Maybe we can trade them Rakell for this years pick lol

Yeah he's spoken about it in several of his podcasts and has mentioned multiple times both O'Brien and Kindel are Clark players that will be high in their draft board. Haven't heard much on Boumedienne. Seems similar to Brunicke. And from what I understand in this draft especially when you start getting into pics 20 and later it's going to open up really wildly. So maybe he's around for the second round.
