The Rangers surrendering thus year’s pick to us would be an admission that they expect to be worse next year, which would be tantamount to a letter of resignation for Drury. Not even worth considering really. They’re keeping the pick.

All things being equal a pick in this draft is more valuable than a pick in a future draft. That’s why we could get a 2nd for Reilly Smith.
Yep, I think if you're Drury and you wanna keep your job you have to keep the pick. For job security alone he needs to keep it, or trade it for a tidy sum yes (not to us).

Yeah, I kinda feel the same. I think it'd be smart for them to send over this year's pick all things considered (next year's draft considered to be deeper, and having a legit franchise cornerstone at 1st overall, their issues/weaknesses, etc), but I do not believe it's a slam dunk for a team with as much (unearned) arrogance and bravado as the Rangers. They're simply not going to essentially admit publicly that this year has the potential to be the norm and next year may very well be as bad, if not worse.

There's nobody in the 20+ range next year I even remotely care to draft, if they are even a #5 to #20 next year I don't care who's there. That's how bad next year's looks to me. It's McKenna or the blah leftovers.

I'd be tempted to trade both picks if neither isn't top #1/#3, that #8 to #10 next year isn't worth the time.

There's

Mckenna..

I think it's very premature to conclude much of anything regarding next years draft. And I guarantee unless they get an insane offer they aren't trading next years 1st.

Apparently Kingerski was telling the team they needed these two wins to have at least a .500 season and they took it to heart…Rust saying they’ll do all they can to win these games…hope isn’t a strategy…they need to scratch some good players and play Ned lol
Kingerski was telling them this? huh?

Boston is tanking here. Normally Pens would be in for a tough day. But Boston just did what the Pens didn't do. they want a top 4 pick. Pens looking to be 8-10. I was hoping for a top 5 or 6 but now what looked promising a couple weeks ago with Rangers sliding and pens we were looking at some higher end talent. Like all are saying win when it counts.

If you look at goal differential we're 6th worse ATM. We're -50. So even in that regard we're inefficient in as much as not sucking in the standings to the degree we should. Which hurts us for the draft. This team is awful.

We can still finish as low as 12th IF we win out.

Why not, has anyone here deep dived it? It hasn't kept them from saying it's a deeper draft with certainty.

I've scanned over it quite well (enough) to come to my own conclusion. I'll even give it the year to prove me wrong it deserves it can develope into a better result/draft.

I really think McKenna drives it all for next year. I believe it's a transition year.

I don't think this logic makes sense. The Rangers can think they'll be better next year while being reasonable about the risks of giving up that pick. Viewing it as that black and white would be really silly for an organization to do.

It's just like what happened when the Penguins traded for Karlsson. They reasonably expected that they were going to be better after adding Karlsson, but they still lottery protected the 1st just to be safe. They ended up not improving despite adding Karlsson.

They're not trading that pick! Our core will be even older, thus the law of diminishing returns. Our prospects are not world beaters. Even if you added a Marner that in and of itself doesn't make us a playoff team. They're not trading that pick. The potential for a top five pick next year is pretty high.

I seriously doubt we'll be trading any 1sts for the foreseeable future. We need to build through the draft. We're long overdue to be doing so.

It is hard to tell what NYR has planned (with that pick and everything else). All I know is that I am happy to see that little "e" next to their name in the standings. They could have easily been the 2025 version of the 2022-23 Florida Panthers, who were left for dead but we gave them life and they became a juggernaut. That would have never happened without our help, IMHO.

So, while the current draft situation does not look great, it could have been far far worse.

I always assumed they put the pick protection in for a reason. Never thought they would surrender it.
Agreed. If you're Drury you cannot trade that pick to PIT. Next year could be a disaster, but that's next year and GM's who might be in the hotseat have to look at the here and now..

VAN should be kicking themselves. Their 1st is worse than the Rags is. Dubas did well with this trade. :thumbu:

I think NY will be better. Probably 15-20 pick next year? I still hold out hope though that they collapse and we Carolina Panther them and get McKenna.

One must have dreams.

Kingerski is the biggest homer moron that exists. He hasn't asked a useful question with his press access in his entire career.
It sounds like something a coach would say, not a reporter, that's why I didn't understand it.

Also, they wouldn't get to .500 as they have 12 OTL.

I keep hearing people say this and no one is providing any evidence. Talk to Rangers fans, they don't feel the same. I'd say it's a coin flip if they improve or not. It could get worse for sure. Saying "I think it NY will be better" is just a blanket statement, I'm assuming based on last years performance and having a topish tier goalie. Their back end is meh. Their young forwards are underachieving. Their ageing players are, well, ageing. Also, the division isn't getting any easier.

I've said it over and over again, WE WANT NEXT YEARS PICK!
