Prospect Info: Draft 2025: Is it too late to tank? Asking for a friend

Buffalo losing in the SO isn’t even a bad outcome for the Penguins, winning would have obviously been better but Buffalo needed to just average 1 point a game in their 2 games in hand on the Penguins. Getting 2 SO/OT losses puts them in the same spot as 1 win and 1 loss.

The Penguins just need to lose tomorrow or in the final game. It makes it impossible for them to jump any of the Rangers, Islanders or Wings with just 1 loss. Losing tomorrow also puts them in the driver’s seat to get the #7 pick and keeps them in play for the #6 pick.

I'm not terribly confident we'll lose to Boston on home ice. The Caps game seems more likely to result in a loss given Washington may want to play their starters in that one to give them a tune up before the playoffs.

Who knows though. If you try to predict this shit you'll go mad. This team will go out and beat Dallas and then lose to Chicago

You know we’re going to win both of the final two games, don’t you? This team is cursed lol

Even if the Pens did that it would require the Islanders losing all of their games for the Pens to pass them. Anaheim would have to go 1-2. If Anaheim ties us (eg we go 2-0, they go 2-1), they'll most likely have the RW tiebreaker. If the Rangers get even a point in their final two games we can't catch them. Ditto Detroit, and Detroit actually has 3 games left. Both of them will have the tiebreaker on us.

I'd say even if the Pens go 2-0 the most likely result is that leads to them finishing ahead of Anaheim and picking 9th or 10th. Passing Detroit or the Islanders would require a pretty healthy dose of bad luck.

Anaheim, plays COL (Without MACK) AT WIN and AT MIN. I don't think they are going 2-1.

Islanders have a 3rd string goalie to finish out the year. Losing out is a strong possibility.

I don't think they're cursed, I think they're very stupid. THIS IS intentional.

It's utter incompetence that no one organizationally is trying to prevent this!

Play Larsson, sit some vets, just stop playing JARRY every f***ing game! WTF!

red wings miss the playoffs for the ninth year in a row. Sharks locking down the worst record in the league again. It’s too bad they can combine their points this year with last year. Then they’d be a wild card team.

Wish Jarry wouldn’t have screwed us but maybe we get a ping pong ball bouncing our way.

9th or 10th would suck…hell, 8th sucks..I want us back to 6th or 7th at worst lol

It's possible but I don't know that I'd put money on it.

The glass half full take on our schedule is we're due a loss or two. And we only really need one loss to secure a reasonable position.

But we'll see how it shakes out.

I appreciate your optimism and I sincerely hope you are right.

With yesterday's results, the Rangers can't pick later than #13 in the draft, and could only pick higher. We won't automatically be getting their pick, and can only get it if they choose to give it to us.

There have been more rumors to suggest that the Rangers will be giving up their 1st this year than rumors to suggest they'll be keeping their 1st this year. I wouldn't automatically assume that they'd hold onto a #10 overall pick and let the Penguins have their 2026 1st.

I know they expect to be better, but handing over an unprotected 2026 1st right after missing the playoffs would be brazen. Even if they think they'll be better, I am really skeptical they'd want to take the chance to hand over that pick to the Penguins.

I think the ideal outcome is that the Rangers lose out and finish with the #9 or #10 pick and just hand it to the Penguins. The Penguins sitting at #7 and #9/10 would set them up really nicely if they either want to trade up (get both O'Brien and Eklund) or trade back (get O'Brien, someone like Kindel and get an extra 2nd to trade back).

Rangers will have a new coach and maybe a GM and no way they give up the 10th pick as if 2026 they will be bad. I actually believe Rangers will risk the 2026 pick being lower as they will be a playoff team. But if the Rangers do go south which is my hope, then a pick with the Pens pick could be nice odds of getting a stud.

Apparently Kingerski was telling the team they needed these two wins to have at least a .500 season and they took it to heart…Rust saying they’ll do all they can to win these games…hope isn’t a strategy…they need to scratch some good players and play Ned lol

There's nobody in the 20+ range next year I even remotely care to draft, if they are even a #5 to #20 next year I don't care who's there. That's how bad next year's looks to me. It's McKenna or the blah leftovers.

I'd be tempted to trade both picks if neither isn't top #1/#3, that #8 to #10 next year isn't worth the time.

I think either way the Rangers are handing the Pens a good pick. Either it's this year's and it's like 10-11ish, which is great. Or it'll be next year's, which has the opportunity to be just as good or better considering all the Rangers' issues. I think I'd personally prefer next year's because of the potential high reward, but landing like Eklund and O'Brien this year would be great for a team like the Pens.

The Rangers surrendering thus year’s pick to us would be an admission that they expect to be worse next year, which would be tantamount to a letter of resignation for Drury. Not even worth considering really. They’re keeping the pick.

All things being equal a pick in this draft is more valuable than a pick in a future draft. That’s why we could get a 2nd for Reilly Smith.
