Prospect Info: Draft 2025: Is it too late to tank? Asking for a friend

The Penguins won't get a No. 1 overall pick as long as Crosby is on this team.
You trade Rakell at the deadline for a 1st+prospect, you trade Rust by fleecing some team that missed out on the Marners and Boesers on July 1st, you trade EK once his bonus is paid this summer. That team is very much in the running to pick top 3 for the final few years of Sid's contract.

Crosby's still very good but let's be realistic here. This is a one line team. This team tanked with Mario Lemieux, man.

Nobody said they were gonna out tank the Hawks or Sharks, that's dumb. The point all season once the team faltered badly before Christmas was to get into the top 4 to land one of the guys everyone says is a clear cut above the rest in the draft. That was easily within reach, they were sitting 4th or 5th at the TDL.
They weren't going to out tank Nashville either, clearly. I think the floor for this team if Dubas had gutted the roster more was finishing 4th or 5th overall.

But even trading a Rakell might not have been enough to make that happen given how f-ing awful the Bruins have been.
There's a huge difference between sitting 5th and sitting 8th, and it's disingenuous to say otherwise imo. Sitting 5th allows you to snag a guy like Hagens or Martone if a team in the top 4 goes for someone like Frondell or Desnoyers cuz they're centers, or McQueen because of his size or whatever. Sitting 8th you're probably shit outta luck even if a multiple teams above you make reach picks.
And if Martone and Hagens are off the board like they should be by the time pick 5 arrives, then what? Then you're left with getting a prospect that in all likelihood is similar to what you'd get at #8.

You're not wrong that 5th gives more flexibility in case teams go off board though. That could prove to be a factor. We shall see.
It's wild to me that people aren't more annoyed about yet another miserable season where the only silver lining was being in position to snag the best prospect on paper they've had in 20 years.
It's been so long since we've been shitty that it just doesn't bother me that much yet. Plus y'know three cups, all the good memories, etc.

If we're stuck in shitty limbo three-four years from now with no end in sight (a la Buffalo) maybe I'll get annoyed then, but for now, it's whatever.
This team had the opportunity to come outta this season accomplishing three very important things; getting value for Petts (success), getting value for Rakell when his value was higher than it'll likely ever be (fail), and settling into a top 5 pick and landing the best prospect they've selected since Staal in 2006 (not looking good). That sucks. But we'll always have these 4-2 wins in mid-April to remember, potentially adding a guy like Martone or Hagens isn't nearly as important as Sid getting a few garbage points.

I have a feeling the Rangers are keeping the pick unless they're forced to hand it over. They don't seem like the kinda organization/owner to essentially say publicly that they can't risk leaving next year's pick unprotected because the team may be just as bad or worse.
Rakell could still be dealt in the summer though that seems unlikely. The draft is gonna be a big fat who the hell knows for 2-3 years unless we draft an instant impact prospect there and even if we somehow win the lottery I don't see a lot of those in this draft.

The rumors are that the Rangers will keep the pick and try to be better next year.

I think pragmatism, not probability, needs to be the mindset. Yeah, you can hope something unexpected and unlikely happens with that 8.5% chance, but it's not wise to plan for that. There just seems to be this expectation that the Pens would have realistic chances to move up if they were 4th or 5th worst right now, and past results really don't bear that out.

If you want a chance at a No. 1 pick, you have to be willing to be the worst team in the NHL. And the Pens aren't going to do that with Crosby, understandably so.
Being the worst team isn't always a guarantee either anyhow as we've seen with Chicago. Celebrini looks like he might be good enough to guide San Jose out of the basement, but Bedard is looking a ways away from being that player if he ever even does become that.

And we've all seen where Buffalo has been.

If there's an argument here where by anyone thinks it's better to pick 8th 9th or 10 and so on as opposed to getting a top five pick because it means you suck that's just ludicrous! Staying in the mushy middle gets you nowhere!

Sounds like many here are using a coping mechanism and not wanting to face the truth. lol

I don't agree that "it's been so long since this team's been shitty" tbh. They haven't won a playoff round in seven years and they'll probably miss the playoffs for the final half decade of Sid's career. They're already shitty, they've been shitty. They'll continue to be shitty. They're just too proud and f***in' dumb to be benefiting from being shitty.

As for the Sabres, that team's misery is entirely self-inflicted. They could have a roster with Eichel, Tage, Cozens, Hagel, Reinhart, Dahlin, Power, and Ullmark but years of a meddling owner and insanely incompetent FO/coaching has them perpetually in limbo.

I dunno, man. All this "don't rush into the teardown" stuff is so dumb. Nobody's advocating they trade Sid or Geno. Just supporting cast pieces that don't matter now and won't matter in the future when it's time to try and compete again. This team's just spinning its tires in no man's land for no reason. They have full control over getting out of the ditch and getting back on the road to competing but they simply refuse. And people are like "yeah, no, that's fine actually". It's craziness.

I want them to lose as bad as anyone but I really really don’t think keeping Raks cost them much more than 2 points max

Decent goaltending out of nowhere really killed the tank
It's a combination. Rakell's been a PPG guy since the TDL. Agree that Jarry suddenly remembering how to play goalie is the real killer, but you take away one of three offensive weapons this team has up front and I do think the team probably loses a couple more games between the TDL and end of the season. And that's a big deal when the race is just as tight for a top 4 or 5 pick as it is for any WC spot. If this team loses 3 more games throughout the season they're sitting below the Bruins for 4th overall atm.

I'd like to see us lose ONE game in REG, like tomorrows.

Shouldn't be too much to ask for a team that's lost this season to the Bruins, SJ and CHI, just one more bad game, that's all those losers have to do, lose! That's all this team had done for 7 years!

How about the fact that the Isles top two goalies are out with injuries? And the fact that Sullivan and Crosby are playing these games as if it's game seven of the finals?

I know BOS and WAS won't play balls to the wall like we will. Maybe we'll get lucky but...
Sully came out of retirement, reg Dunlop style?

Yes, we’re not losing enough…idiots…

It's f***ing sickening to thik of how close we were to a top 4 pick only to drop to f***ing 8th or higher.

f*** you Dubi for not selling more at the TDL.
f*** you TJ for finally playing well now that the season's over.
f*** you Sully for finally playing the kids, who look great, now that the season's over.

f***ing losers.

Why’d they give him a 2 year, one-way deal?
When they signed Larsson on April 29, 2024. At the time, they didn't have any idea whether Murashov was going to come over to North America and Nedelkjovic was a pending free agent.

Murashov didn't decide what he was going to do until after the development camp in July. Ned signed an unexpected extension in June.

Larsson was signed to ensure they had someone besides Blomqvist and Gauthier in the system no matter what happened at the NHL level. The fact that Ned returned and Murashov came over suddenly made things crowded instead of thin.

Djurgarden won 2-1 today in game seven. OT too. Great game. Eklund and Frondell will continue on. Which also means Frondell's attendance at the U18's is probably off. Pretty sure those start at or shortly after game one of the next round.

Interestingly enough, Scott Power of The Athletic wrote this week that the Blackhawks love Frondell, and indicated his history with Kruger makes them value him more than a lot of other people within the range.
