Prospect Info: Draft 2025: Is it too late to tank? Asking for a friend

Reading some of his scouting reports gives me "McGroarty at center" vibes with him. Definitely not a bad pick, but more of a complementary piece when they need more of a driver with this pick. Very smart player that can be the defensive presence for a line, but not a guy that's really going to be driving offense on your line. Seems like the kind of guy you'd want centering a winger like Kaprizov or Panarin.

Desnoyers is a guy I'd love to pick if I already had a Celebrini/Bedard in my system. The Penguins just need to aim higher because of the lack of top end talent in their system. I think that's similar to why I really like O'Brien as well, he has the highest boom potential outside of the top-4 picks in this draft IMO.

I'd be interested to see what he does with a greater compliment of player surrounding him. Essentially what you said about the Bedard/Celebrini type is the way I feel too. He shot a lot this year, and not all of them from very good circumstances. He tried to do it all. Sometimes it worked, but he lacked the individual offensive dynamics of someone like Jake O'Brien. You can see it's in there, but it hasn't fully come together yet. That being said, when he gets into a prime chance and rips them, forget it. He can fire them as well as anyone.

The Rangers would probably be better off just giving us the pick this year. Bite the bullet now, that way you're not sweating next year if you start to inevitably bottom out even harder.

If I'm GM of the Rangers, there's no way I would take the chance of losing out on Gavin for freekin McQeen or whatever other gamble is left on the board at #8.
Yes, Dolan is thinking that too. But there's absolutely no chance he's going to let Drury stay GM through that process either. They would get another GM just like FSG did with Hextall and Dubas changeover.
If you owned the New York Rangers would you let Drury go from the year he just had into overseeing a rebuild?

Penguins fans. “We can move Kevin Hayes and Noel Acciari this summer cos of the cap increasing”

Penguins fans also ”good luck moving Panarin”
He's probably the only one they could move and they most likely would have to eat a lot of cap. No one is going to want Mika for 3 years at 8.5 per or Kreider at 6.5 per for 2 years

The more I think about it, the more likely I think they are likely to give us even the 8th pick this year if they get it. From their perspective, if they believe they can win now still then that 8th pick does nothing for them and then if they are having a bad season next season, they can sell off at the deadline and still have the chance at #1 in 2026 for themseleves.

If I'm GM of the Rangers, there's no way I would take the chance of losing out on Gavin for freekin McQeen or whatever other gamble is left on the board at #8.
I'd love the penguins to draft sixth overall, and get the Rags 8th or 9th pick in 2025. Some team will reach on a player before the penguins pick.

Yeah I actually think the worst case outcome as we stand today is the Rangers somehow landing 14-15th. I am not even sure it’s possible anymore.

I would rather take the lottery ticket on a team who is clearly aging, not much youth to speak of, and not many routes to get noticeably better in the offseason.

Yeah it could turn out that the Rangers could finish much better in 2026 but I just don’t see that happening.

It also gives yourself additional ammo in a stacked draft to do what is needed. And as others have stated, hopefully they attempt to get more ammo for said draft.

They need to be looking at all avenues to get young players and draft picks.

Yup, we are in a good spot. We just need to go 1-2 in the last 3 games.
Yeah they can’t get above 79 points because worst case that could potentially get them into the teens.

Silver lining is that even if they get to 79 points, the lowest they will be is 9th because they lose the RW (a good thing in this case) to everyone in the league not named the Sharks, Blackhawks, and Flyers (which is truly sad).

Best case is we obviously lose out. Bruins play us Sunday and the Blackhawks tomorrow. But I have no doubt we beat the Bruins on Sunday.

We lose out and the best we can do is 4th with a bunch of help. But a realistic best case is probably that 5-6 range. Hard to see any more wins on the Kraken or Ducks schedules.

Flyers have the Islanders, Blue Jackets, Senators, and Sabres (big game for seeding). Can they somehow get 3 points in those 4 games while we don’t get another point? Those odds are low.

Like I said, best case is 4th, realistic best case 5-6, realistic 7-8, realistic worst case 9, worst case 11-13

Just hoping this team can lose out, but with this stupid heater they've been on the past month, doesn't look likely. Ending up top 4 was always key, but top 5 would be great. Settling in at like 7th or 8th is whatever, just sucks ass that that spot puts them out of the reach of landing somebody like a Martone or Hagens if teams ahead of them decide to go with somebody like McQueen or Frondell or Desnoyers.

What an annoying, disappointing, yet predictable end of the season this has been.

I'd still like to see somebodies work that 2026 is a better draft year because I call BS.
I feel like the strength of the draft is usually gauged by the top end talent ready to make the jump. Not a lot of that this year.

There’s 200+ draft eligible players and scouts only see most of them 2-3 times year at most from my understanding.

Kind of off topic , Is Issac Howard worth offering The Rangers 1st to Tampa ? If they wouldn't keep it.

I'm thinking Brady Martin is a viable option in the 6-8 range as well.

I'm not even convinced this team has a timeline yet tbh. They're just in suspended animation until Sid retires, then the timeline can begin. Assuming they don't somehow luck into like, Misa and McKenna.
