Agree to disagree on that. If they hit their upsides, I'd definitely take Eklund over Desnoyers. That's kinda what I view the equivalent of this discussion to be.
We are talking about a true beast if Desnoyers hits his upside. So that’s kinda bold.

Agree- I’d take grittier Will Nylander over Reilly Smith. Fine- I’ll give him Derick Brassard.

If you told me there was a 6’5 horse that would basically lock down your bottom 6 for 20 years, could give you 40-45 points with 3rd liners and match up vs top centers I’d take that pretty high in the draft. But Desnoyers is nothing like Staal.

I can't relate to the people who don't want the Rangers to finish 10thish. That puts them in a really tough spot. We prefer they defer to next year but they will probably be too scared to do that. If they did implode next year, which I won't say is likely but isn't out of the question given their aging roster, we basically get a freeroll for Gavin.

Even if we grab an extra 5% chance at Gavin in 2026, that is a much better outcome than us selecting 14th this year with the Rangers pick.

If he truly is generational, if I'm the Rangers, even if they end up with pick #10 this year, they really have to consider giving it up. Long story short, as long as they don't fall below us, I want them to lose as much as possible to put them in lose lose situation.

This. And its kind of goofy to wish for otherwise. NYR losses are the way.

With the loss tonight against the Flyers below are the last four games for the Rangers.
Thursday- at N.Y. Islanders
Saturday- at Carolina
Monday- at Florida
Thursday- Home against Tampa

I can see them only winning one of those four games. The penguins are going to get their first round pick in 2026.

I think I'm more invested in NYR losing than the Pens losing at this point. If they keep racking up Ls, they could finish right around where the Pens are.

Which means we either get a fantastic pick this year or the McKenna scratch ticket, both of which are great options.
One thing that will happen is Laviolette will be gone after this season ends.

I think with the Flyers winning tonight against the Rags, the Penguins are getting their 1st rounder in 2026.
The way they're playing I hope we don't leap frog them in the standings. Teams just above us seem to not wanna win. I just hope we lose friday and sunday. It would solve a lot of problems.

I will say I think NYR takes care of themselves in terms of sucking.

I def want us to lose out.

2 point swing if we can drop Boston game. Hopefully they beat Chicago

The Rangers are currently 10th in point percentage. If they go 2-2 the rest if the way they are guaranteed to finish 13th or lower.
They could go 0-4. And that wouldn't be good. They're just not playing defense anymore.

They can still give up the pick this year even if they pick in the top 13. Like I said, they really need to consider it either way. It's a terrible situation for them unless they somehow win the lottery this year, then the decsiosn is easy. But, if they pick, lets say 8th and they end up with the 2nd coming of Derrick Pouliot, then they have a horrid season next season (totally possible) we get an extra chance (assuming we are in the lottery as well) at the 2026 god. If the scenerio happens and we get gavin with their pick that they deferred, they will have 20 years of pain, which we will all enjoy. Them finishing 14th this year would have been the worst outcome for us.

That's fine. I don't attribute that much of their struggles to coaching.

3 other things that will happen are Cuylle and Miller are RFAs due for big raises and Laf will be making 5 mil more per. That isn't going to improve the team.

I think it’s likely the pick is in the 20s next year because of Shesterkin but that’s okay. They’re tight against the cap and old. Been getting outplayed for awhile. Maybe they get even worse. It’s a no lose for us.

Now the top brass for the Rangers are thinking F- the penguins are going to get our 1st rounder either in 2025 or 2026. Thanks a lot Rutherford!

Just the chance they could be worse, is worth it. Maybe Shesterkin goes the way of Jarry, or he gets injured, having the extra chance at #1 2026 is all that matters and I can't see it any other way.

And good luck trying to move Panarin, Zibanejad, Krieder, Trocheck or Miller this offseason.

The more I think about it, the more likely I think they are likely to give us even the 8th pick this year if they get it. From their perspective, if they believe they can win now still then that 8th pick does nothing for them and then if they are having a bad season next season, they can sell off at the deadline and still have the chance at #1 in 2026 for themseleves.

If I'm GM of the Rangers, there's no way I would take the chance of losing out on Gavin for freekin McQeen or whatever other gamble is left on the board at #8.
