Prospect Info: Draft 2025 Habs you're on the clock

Ryabkin:

C
6'0"
201lbs
Skilled player who plays physically with a bitten all three zones.

He will slip and isn't undersized.
Ya, very intriguing prospect. I read that at one point, he was considered as the next Russian phenom. But failed to show any progress in Russia this year, so he was sent to the USHL mid-year. He was a point a game player which is good for the USHL, but not great, certainly not what you would expect from a player that is supposed to be extremely talented. His position in the public draft lists varies wildly. Some have him at 15, others in the 2nd round.
Are you aware of any obvious deficiencies in his game? Something like bad skating, or low hockey IQ?

Like with many youngsters, it's really a question of consistency.

He doesn't cheat and skimp out on his defensive responsibilities as a C. He also adds that physical element across the entire sheet of ice.

Beyond that, there's no denying his offensive creativity in the O-zone and his ability to vary his playmaking to keep opponents guessing, from crisp passes to the slot, to cross crease passes, to give and goes. I'd assume he has the right affinities to complement a style like one that Demidov possesses.

The possible chemistry with Demidov is one of the reasons I would like to select Ryabkin at the 2025 draft.

The other is the fact that St-Louis might well the right coach to enable Ryabkin to play with confidence at the NHL level.

The physical edge Ryabkin plays with also gives me confidence that he won't be just a perimeter player trying to be the smartest guy on the ice without as much implication in the play as might be needed.

Lastly, he is already in North America and that won't be an issue as it is with some Russian athletes who might be overseas for longer periods of time.

I also attribute the stalled development overseas to the stifling environment over there that prides itself on trying to break rookie players in order to make them better human beings à la Therrien, or like the Habs systematically did when they were ripe with superstars throughout their lineup. ;)

Not all players react the same way to that treatment.

Lafleur, for example, was stimulated to prove everyone just how good he was.

Wickenheiser just lost confidence and what should have been a good career was wasted.

You clearly did not see what I wrote.

I said: There is no such thing as BPA at the 16th or 17th rank.

Kotkaniemi was 3rd overall, not even in the same rank conversation. Can't you read ?

For 1 Cole Caufield, there are dozens of other busts that was BPA at the time of the draft.

In 2014, BPA at 16th, a pick held by the Blue Jackets Columbus, was around guys like Sonny Milano, Travis Sanheim, Tony DeAngelo and Nick Schmaltz.

They selected Milano at 16th... at 26th overall there was a guy named David Pastrnak picked by Boston...

Guess who won that ?! There's hundreds of other examples.

In 2019, BPA at 17th, a pick held by Colorado, was guys like Alex Newhook, Payton Krebs, Samuel Poulin...

They selected Alex Newhook at 17th ahahhaa.... at 25th overall, Connor McMichael got picked by Washington and Shane Pinto went to Ottawa at 32th overall... 2 players who are miles better than Newhook now and that weren't viewed as the BPA at 17th at the time...

You want me to continue ?! So my reply was right regardless of what you think.

I just showed you Cole was the BPA when we drafted him, you keep going in some odd circle of obscurity.

Yes, and the Habs were kind of lucky it paned out. Cole is an undersized one dimensional winger and always will.
If they went for a positional need and drafted Thomas Harley instead of Caufield, would the team be in a a worst place right now ?! The answer is no and I would rather have Harley than Caufield on my team.

6 years later, the BPA was not Caufield but Harley, so again you are still wrong.

IMHO, we are still in rebuild mode. I’ve read some absolutely Mike Milbury type trades around here? On the trade rumours thread people are suggesting Demidov for 2C ???
Insanity.
#’s 16-17 are valuable assets to a rebuilding team and this draft is deeper than first reported. Some of the “experts” I’ve read say there are 6 no doubters & 12 solid picks, so we may have a couple fall to us.

I still believe Dach can still turn it around! We will be better next year with Dach, Hutson & Demidov comfortably fitting in. Our D will be faster with Reinbacher or Mailloux coming up.

HuGo may stick to the master plan and simply add two very good assets #16-17…...or make a move to get an Issac Howard type deal. Either way I trust HuGo will not jeopardize the future.

Cheers

Cole was a very obvious pick. He was top 5 on many lists.

I think teams always draft BPA... but BPA is a very subjective thing in many cases... when it is not then absolutely run up and pick the guy... like they did with Cole.

Just to give it some context... it would be like Frondell being available at 16. I think if that happens Hughes will run to the podium.

I like Ravensbergen but there's plenty of mid round goalie targets. Frolov or Hood are particularly impressive and don't have a lot of hype.

I know we have a great pipeline of G's but I really hope they find another one this year! I love how they have been finding the G's!

Also wouldn't it be great if someone takes him top 15.... OR wants to trade up a few spots for him at 16 or 17!

I watched Josh quite a bit, the kid has all the tools but he really did not have a great year for Prince George when it mattered. Some really bad goals in the playoffs. But size and compete.. if he's there in the second round I'd grab him for sure.

Exactly, BPA is going to vary wildly from person to person and team to team. You see it easily with size, a lot where critics will say "oh they went for size instead of BPA" but in reality the team went with who they thought would become the BPA it's just they projected that the prospect's size was going to help make them the BPA.

Carter Bear said in an interview with Marco D'amico that he went to dinner with the Habs already.

I'm not surprised. He is exactly what they are looking for in a player.

Bear has a special ability to get on pucks... what a motor! I hope his injury does hamper him. I'm a bit worried about his frame and lack of speed taking a toll on him with the style he plays... but you might have a Gallagher replacement...

It would be very exciting if Bobrov & the team like him!

He's not big but not small either. 6' 180lbs right now is alright.

I don't think you can go wrong with him, he'll become at least a good complementary piece in the top 6. He'd look good with any guys we have.

who are the big meanies in this draft
From what I've seen, Mace'o Phillips tops the list. His physical game is chaotic as hell and he's quite unhinged at times.

Not a shit disturber nor the biggest, but one I'm a fan of is Malte Vass. This kid hits like a train, and often looks like the most annoying dman to play against.

Holy PIM's batman... Maceo Philips ... that's a lot of PIM for the NTDP!!

What do you think of this years draft? Any favourites? Who you hoping for at 16 & 17? 41 & 49?

For sure not a spectacular draft. Also it's such a crapshoot so many prospects can end up in the top 12 depending on what teams value more in a player.

I'm not overly excited by anyone who could fall to us except for Bear, if the injury scares off scouts. But I do like Lakovic's talent (even though his lack of commitment can be frustrating), Hensler all-around game, Spence and Cootes' pro game. I know he's not ranked anywhere near the mid-teens by anyone, which leaves me a bit perplexed after my isolated viewings, but Zharovsky is some "reach" I'd entertain going for depending on who's off the board. He's a project but he's an offensive line driver with a toolkit that is much more interesting than a lot of players ranked above him, in my opinion.

I'm not sure about Aitcheson's game as I find it quite chaotic for good and bad reasons. Same with Carbonneau, whose shot and grit is great but his IQ leaves to be desired. I know Ryabkin has his share of fans around here but I just don't want anything to do with him.

I don't think a trade up is realistic this year as I don't believe the picks to hold much value. Perhaps they could be sweeteners for a 2C, which I would be down for. And if this can't fetch anything, I would entertain the idea of trading down a bit and going for potentially high-reward projects like Nestrašil, Amico, Rombach, Prokhorov and West (if he fully commits to hockey).

If we stay put in the second, then I'm liking Horcoff, Vass, Limatov or any of the aforementioned projects, should they drop. All of them are higher on my list.

TL;DR: Tough to call the picks, several options available.
