BPA is just "don't screw up." No one complains that Romanov wasn't BPA anymore, though there was some griping at the time. The first 5 to 10 picks are more and more reliable every year, so it's pretty risky to reach with really early picks, but once you are into the teens you have to hope your scouts know more than the media, and that you know the player that will help your team. Even with that there are years like the Slaf pick where there was no consensus at the time, and not much now. Cooley looks good, as does Nazar, but the habs didn't really have space for another small forward, though either could have replaced Newhook. Slaf has been up and down.

Taking KK when he wasn't really in the discussion was a reach, compounded by bad development. McCarron was a reach because they could probably have taken him a round or two later. Taking one of 5 guys ranked in the teens at 16 or 17 is not a reach, unless you are passing up Caufield. I doubt you need to worry much about BPA or anything else by the end of the second round because any player who makes it will have developed so much that he is unrecognizable from draft day.

The habs have often failed in the draft chasing big players, since the last cup, and been successful with small guys who dropped. They need to find a few good big players, and they can't really play another small D, but they shouldn't pass on an elite small forward.

Never forget Tom Wilson was a 16th overall pick. Unless you get a player with a similar impact than Wilson in his prime (26ish) then it's not worth trading the picks. Trading the picks to patch a short term hole would be a mistake.

I wonder if a trade of 17th, 41st, Adam Engstrom and Arber Xhekaj to Seattle for 8th would work. I feel like they're looking for toughness and prospect depth at D and they might still be able to get their guy in the middle 1st. This also helps us to move out a few prospects before the inevitable next expansion draft which is not too far away.

Draft Roger McQueen, Brady Martin, or Jake O'Brien there at 8 and sign Gavrikov to make up for the loss of those young Dmen. Tidy piece of business.

But it all depends on who's the 2C, I'd want someone 25 and younger and proven for Guhle.

The Canadiens need new prospects in the pipeline. I guarantee there will be head-scratching moments in the first round, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a 10th-12th overall ranked player fall into Hughes' lap. Just don't trade them for another overpriced redemption project. Two consecutive picks is a good position to be in. Pick a highly-ranked player and your guy. And don't let the play-offs fool you into thinking we need size above everything else. Unless it's a talented player with size.

I would not be against such a trade simply based on DRs injury history but high odds, Utah would feel the same way now.

I’m not trading Reinbacher straight up for that pick. You got an almost NHL ready 6’3 RD who not only fits an organization need but is a super rare commodity with his skating ability and decent offensive ability. I’m not trading him for an 18 yo potential 2nd line center who’s 3 years away from maybe making an impact.

The Habs need both a 2C and a RHD. Reinbacher has been developed for two years. Now you suggest we trade our possible RHD prospect for a 2C who will be one or two years behind. You haven't really done anything to fill the two holes we have on the Habs.

This is the first draft class in ages when none of the projected 1st rounders are expected to be ready to play in NHL next season - it’s a testament to the weakness of this draft cuvée relative to last 20-25 years.

I’d trade them both with package for an impact player (even older), or draft if it fails. No in-between.. team has been one of the worst in the nhl 4 consecutive seasons and a half, miraculously made the playoffs on their last game… Adding mid players to a (not even) average team won’t move the needle, except take everyone nearer retirement..

Habs have craps to trade outside their underage nhl core + Fowler in the ahl so those picks might be what org needs to get a trade done. Being so young they can skip a draft year imo.

Utah would make that deal yesterday and it’s not even close. Now maybe Reinbacher doesn’t become that top pairing guy in hindsight, but his value as an NHL ready prospect at a premium position is 100% higher than anyone not named Schaefer or Misa in this draft.

What Dach/Nazar situation ? They traded Romanov for Dach. They never had any intention of drafting at 13 or drafting Nazar.

People seem to disregard Konyushkov as a valuable RHD prospect for the Habs. If nothing else, he will become minute-munching D that can play in all game situations, even if he is only 5'11". A future RHD depth of Mrtka - Konyushkov - Mailloux mightn't be all that bad at all.

I have a really hard time trading Reinbacher.

We have to learn from our mistakes:
1) Trading Ryan McDonagh (then, we had PK Subban) for Gomez - one of the worst trades in our team's history
2) Trading away PK Subban for Shea Weber (Weber 1st year or so was great, but injuries and was on the back 9 of his career) - not the worst trade but check my next point
3) When we traded away PK for Weber, we had a young and promising prospect in Mikhail Sergachev in our system. But then once again, Marc Bergevin's obsession with a "1C" got him trading away our PK replacement in Sergachev for Jonathan Drouin in the hopes he turns out a 1C.
4) Trading away Sergachev and with Drouin never panning out in Montreal, it has created such low years in a row of lacking a sound defenseman.

David Reinbacher has all the tools and physical attributes to become a 2-way logging machine for us. He is only 20 years old. If you give up on him now, we could be looking at many more years of a weak bad end. Reinbacher needs to remain healthy and continue his progression. Don't give up on him, he is a stud and plays the game the right way. He would be the perfect perfect complement to Lane Hutson. Even more than Kaiden Guhle

If reaching their potential, that's a pretty good top 3. Reinbacher also brings the big boy physicality we lacked in the playoffs.
