Prospect Info: Draft 2025 - Everyone is trading up, but no one seems to be trading down edition

Wasn't there an interview recently with Dubas where he was asked about some prospects and he specifically said "Porter's special" and grinned or something?

Trade up for Martone. Do it, coward.

Yeah that is true, I have zero doubts that Dubas loves Martone. The issue is that if he's going at #4 to Utah, how are you moving up to get him?

I think Hagens will be easier to trade up to draft, Hagens seems like he'll be sliding while Martone doesn't.

I don't really know how things are gonna shake out. I wouldn't be surprised to see Martone at 4OA, I also wouldn't be surprised to see him sitting there at like 8OA.

Watch us move heaven and Earth for Martone and he busts. While McQueen goes 11th and becomes the GOAT.

I don't see any way Martone goes lower than #6 right now. Even if Utah passes on him to take Martin, I think Philly jumps on him at #6 if he's still there.

I just don't see that many fits for Hagens in the top-10 if Nashville or Boston don't take him, which I think they take Desnoyers and O'Brien over him.

I'm typically a fan of not getting overly-cute even though it can be fun in the moment.

I wanted a better pick than this but the team decided to uncork it's head from it's ass at the exact wrong time and here we are. Just get the pick right like you said.
For me it’s the logic + cost. If the team thinks it’s own scouts are so good that they “KNOW” some player is gonna be such a stud they have to trade up for them at 8th… you’re telling me they can’t still draft a good player at 11th?

It’s never fair value to move up into these high picks. Always gotta give up an arm and leg.

Whatever they do they gotta get it right

NYI - Schaefer
SJ - Frondell
CHI - Misa
UT - Martin
NSH - O'Brien
PHI - Desnoyers
BOS - McQueen

Pens trade up to snag either Martone or Hagens at 8OA. Seems well within the realm of realistic imo. Especially if Seattle likes Rakell or Rust enough.

The thing that makes the whole "trading up" debate tough is that I'd do it or not depending on who is available at #11, but it's impossible to know who will be available at #11 if you're trading up. If #11 and #12 will be Eklund and Aitcheson, I'd rather trade up to #8 to get Hagens or Martone easily. If #11 and #12 will be McQueen/O'Brien and Eklund, I'd rather stick at #11 and #12.

I still think the best case scenario is #11 and #12 for #8 and Tampa's 2026 1st and you just take the best guy available at #8 and have a late 1st in a much better draft next year. It will suck if the draft falls that you gave up McQueen/O'Brien and Eklund, but trading up to get the guy you prefer is worth it and I dislike drafting Aitcheson more than I like drafting McQueen/O'Brien.

I'm just interested in getting the best player possible out of this draft tbh. If that means flipping 11+12 for 8+Tampa's 2026 1st, cool. If that means using the 11+Rakell/Rust to move up, cool.

It's gonna have to be a draft floor, on the fly thing though. Lotta variables.

From what I’m reading there’s a good chance Chicago selects Martone at #3…I give Dubas about a .1% of making him a Penguin lol

There's a lot of talk about Chicago trying to trade their pick, either to move up for Schaefer or move back to add win now talent. Also there's a bunch of people saying the Sharks may pick Frondell at 2OA, so the Hawks may stand pat and just take Misa if he falls into their lap.

But anyway, Rust+11OA to Chicago for 3OA+ something. Do it, Dubas.

Rust would have to waive for Chicago since NMC is still there at the draft…Rakell it is lol

Would take more IMO.

Moving up 8 slots costs a boatload... dumb as it is.

Doubt Chicago is adding anything in that. This deal is already probably stupid for Chicago.

If it's Rust being involved, I feel like it's closer to Rust, #11 and #12 for #3. Which at that point, I'd rather just not trade up all the way to #3.

Yeah that's probably a tad rich but more realistic.

I get moving up in the NFL draft being expensive... I have no idea why it's the same way in the NHL. Though trading from 11 to 3 in a draft like this is like going from abject poverty to living in a gold-plated palace so I get it in this specific instance.

We have these rumors every year about how teams in the top-5 are interested in trading the pick but the pick never gets traded. I don't think this year is going to be any different.

The highest I think the Penguins move up to is probably #8.
