Prospect Info: Draft 2025 - Everyone is trading up, but no one seems to be trading down edition

Outside of Misa, who is way out of trade up range, there are no centers worth fretting over losing. /shrug

Scouts and prospect gurus aren't even sure if Hagens is gonna be a center at the NHL level.

If all the centers go and at least one Dman, probably Mrtka, then that means Eklund would be available. Not a bad pick.

Some people do think that if a called back goal should actually be counted then the game still goes the same exact way. Which is wild to me. Why would it go the same way??? Not sure if I'm describing it the right way but I do hate writing on my phone. Will try again if that point isn't coming across.

This 1st rounder is extremely important. If played right that pick could be the first piece of a future core. So, if we have to pay a small premium to try and facilitate that by moving up, so be it! It's far too important not to.

I think the issue though is that Aitcheson also offers more value than just hitting and fighting. His hockey IQ is lacking, but he has a rocket of a shot as well and is super willing to join the rush to attack. He's not just some stay at home tough guy, he offers 2-way value.

He's a guy I flip flop on regularly, because what he can be if he pans out is so enticing but it's also terrifying to see what he can be if he doesn't pan out. I don't just mean that as in "what if he's a bust", he can also become someone like Jack Johnson who is a drain on the team for years.

I guess my preference, and that’s all it is, is towards offensive potential. I’m not against physicality at all.

I feel like Trouba at one point was somewhat of a 2 way player? I just get worried about someone chasing hits from the backend.

I'm waiting for Bobby Mac's ratings later today, but my feeling right now is the top-10 is shaping up to be something like:

1. NYI: Schaefer
2. San Jose: Misa
3. Chicago: Frondell
4. Utah: Martin
5. Nashville: Desnoyers
6. Philly: Hagens
7. Boston: O'Brien or McQueen
8. Seattle: Martone
9. Buffalo: Mrtka
10. Anaheim: McQueen, Lakovic or Aitcheson

A feeling I have is that if O'Brien gets beyond Boston at #7, he's lasting until #11 for the Penguins to pick. It really depends on whether Boston likes him or McQueen more, my gut feeling is that they take O'Brien at #7 but I can be swayed either way. Anaheim is a real wildcard here, they've gone off the board so much in the past few drafts that it's easy to see them reaching for a high upside guy like Lakovic here. Aitcheson and McQueen also both fit really well their draft track record too.

My feeling is that Eklund will definitely be available at #11 and there's a 50/50 chance that either McQueen or O'Brien will be available at #11. If they have #11 and #12, I think there is a reasonable chance that they can get Eklund and O'Brien/McQueen, which is the ideal outcome of this draft IMO.
 
If for some reason we traded down I really like what I’m hearing about Cullen Potter.

Him and Logan Hensler are intriguing to me. Partially because with a name Logan Hensler how do you not become a hockey player.

I think he offers clearly more offensive upside than Gudas, though. I'm not even referring to how he plays like a rover now, I think his shot plus willingness to join the rush are all things that Gudas doesn't have.

I think Aitcheson projects to be a Gudas/Dumba hybrid middle pair D. I feel that's an appropriate player to be going in the 10-15 range in a draft.

Nah. I don’t even have him as a first round talent. Not sure how interested I’d be at 59th. He looks like a less physically talented Chiarot imo.

Going back through drafts there’s always a D that gets massively overdrafted with hindsight. I feel pretty strongly Aitcheson will be this years.

It would be kinda funny if the Penguins ended up picking Carbonneau with their 1st, not because he'd be a bad pick but because I feel like he's been the least talked about guy they could draft. I've spent significantly less time looking into Carbonneau than I have guys like Aitcheson, Eklund, Lakovic and such.

The scouting reports I'm reading on him say he's a goal scoring winger with great skating and good size, which seems like a really good pick if they take him. The main area of hesitation I have is that he's putting up those numbers in the Q, which is just a shitty league and not really something that is a problem with him.

I want to watch a bit of video with him, but a 6'1", 205 lbs goal scoring winger with good skating and a bit of a physical game looks like good option with the Penguins pick. I want to get an idea of how I'd compare him to Eklund.

If this happens (assuming Martin is gone too)

I’m taking Smith. I know people will hate it (I don’t love it) but the dude has a ton of upside and the skating/size and willingness to be physical is good enough where his floor is high. He’ll play 300+ games even if he “busts”

I don't see any way that Martin isn't going in the top-8, so I wouldn't worry about this too much.

I think Eklund is likely available at #11 and one of O'Brien or McQueen has about a 50/50 chance of being available at #11. I also like the preliminary stuff I've read about Carbonneau as well. I'm not really worried about them not having a good player to pick at #11.
