I'm pretty disappointed overall...
- Alfredsson leaves for a chance at a cup, but goes to a team that isn't any better
- Overpay for a leaf, of all things
- Overpay for Ryan. Win now, lose big later type of trade.
- Don't replace Gonchar at all.
Senators will do better this year but that's mostly because of Spezza/Karlsson being around.
- True, but from a hockey standpoint only, Alfredsson is 41 y/o and declining/aging severely. Wish he could have retired instead of pulling this (IMO he should have)
- Overpay for MacArthur? 3.25 is not a lot for a guy who averaged 53 pts per 82 games the last 3 seasons... at least when you take the actual market in comparison
- Overpay for Ryan? Yes, if he walks after 2 years and we finish low in the standings next season, but otherwise, not at all. You have to give to get and Ryan is clearly the best player in the deal and should remain as the best by a fair margin. If we fail to extend him that's another story, but we control his destiny for now
- Well, off-season is not over and for now we will replace Gonchar by Wiercioch who should be as good offensively. PW is a lot younger (Gonch is 39 y/o!) and more mobile but it will be hard for him to match Gonchar defensively and in the experience factor. Let's see if BM can get another veteran D-man first.
Sure, point is - why didn't he want to sign with us? B/C he was convinced Detroit had a better shot at a cup. He was convinced... I would have liked BM and EM to CONVINCE Alfie the best place for him to be was Ottawa. Also, as a disclaimer, my previous points were after Alfie, but before Ryan (timelines are important for understanding events, yo)...
I would have liked so many things in life, but reality is a different beast than dreams. You do the best with the cards you hold, and that's what Murray did
I don't want to be the one crushing kids' dreams but you have to settle with reality at some point.
Agree with all points. And I also agree with the poster saying we should sign Blum and Brunner. Team would be set at that point.
I just don't think Ryan is the type of player we think we need and we paid way way too much to acquire him. I firmly believe Silfverberg will come very close to matching Ryan's goal totals within the next 2-3 years. Then who knows with Noesen and who knows about the 1st round pick.
lol wut?
Ryan is not the player we need? A power forward winger who scores 30 goals and 65 points each and every year on Anaheim's second line (Point totals could go up in Ottawa playing with Spezza on the 1st line)
We paid way too much? Silfverberg will become a 30 goals/65 pts forward? That remains to be seen...
We spend all this time acquiring picks and developing players just to turn around and throw 2 of them and a 1st rounder for 1 guy. A guy who is definitely "good" but not "great/elite." Poor asset management in my eyes and I don't say that often about Murray.
Yes and in fact it's great asset management to use those assets to upgrade your roster and acquire Elite talent... Those of us who follow the team very closely have hoped for that type of move for a long time.
If you think Ryan is just "good", then you clearly have no idea who he is. And he makes less than Clarkson
