Not willing to employ the brainpower required to wade into the debate around him getting fired, simply to state Don Cherry probably should have taken that severance package when Rogers took over HNIC - his legacy would be somewhat less divisive than it will likely be now.

If you move to a country you should be appreciative of the men and women that made that place somewhere worth moving to IMO. Whether you like the current state of the world or not, had WWII ended differently, odds are that many of us that aren't blonde haired and blue eyed wouldn't be here today.

Unfortunately, Grapeline, with Don and Brian Williams, is no longer on the air after 35 years. It was different in its tone than Coach's Corner and Don and Brian had mutual respect for each other. I recall after the "Punch up in Piestany", both had opposing views of what had happened. But, it was never an attack at each other.

Theres no conspiracy theories being espoused- But this is digressing a bit.
I think its a sad day for free speech in Canada. We need guys like Don in the public sphere to keep censorship at bay, even if he is a bit senile. People should be allowed to think for themselves. People should exercise their rights.
I respect his use of his platform to promote the soldiers who have suffered for us, and we should acknowledge that is a lot different from supporting the military industrial complex which is a horrible thing. War is wrong, but respecting those who have suffered and sacrificed, the victims of politics and aristocratic machinations, is clearly different.
I think we ALL KNOW what Don was trying to say and where his heart is at. He is from a diffetrnt era and i dont think he hates immigrants and refugees, he is just trying to instill Canadian values that he has espoused for the last half century. We shouldnt get our feathers ruffled so easily.
Acknowledging his mistake and apologizing should have sufficed. What is occuring now is unCanadian.

In Don's World, there has always been a long standing demonizing of 'you people' that has included European hockey players, French hockey players and province, political and societal beliefs different than his own, NHL players who sought compensation for head trauma, and last night lumped all Immigrant Newcomers to Canada with his statement. He's a cartoon character who has always held an 'us ' versus 'them' mentality which has been devisive. Society has changed massively since the Coach took the airwaves to entertain, sometimes enlighten and often to provoke about the game of hockey as it is played and over time the Don's ego drifted out of his lane to provoke harmful beliefs through his pulpit. It's bittersweet. He was once entertaining and somewhat relevant in breaking down the game. But he's chosen his line in the sand to define his legacy failing to correct a long standing pattern of behaviour to stigmatize whole groups of people with negative, discriminatory commentary that was never held to account by Maclean, his employers and beyond. On a day and weekend focused on the tragedy of war, the human cost and honouring of the ultimate sacrifice of so many, Cherry chose to cherry pick and unfairly stigmatize through his value judgement a whole group of Canadians who do not align with his limited world view of Canadian life.

Thanks so much for your post--to doubters-take a moment to imagine what our World would look like (literally and figuratively) if it wasn't for the heroism of the allied forces. I can't imagine being that brave in front of the Nazi machine. Walk around Calgary and Edmonton today and you see the vast diversity that these people have given us. I pity anyone who would say otherwise.

Didn’t always agree with his views but always appreciated how he tried to teach kids how dangerous hockey was. Not that Rogers has great production values to begin with but one less reason to watch HNIC.
One thing I think everyone can agree on is that honouring and respecting our veterans past and present is the right and respectable thing to do.

Okay, but don't single out immigrants for not wearing poppies when:
1. It's not a proven fact
2. No statistical evidence shows that immigrants refuse to wear poppies
3. No information is out there showing that Canadian born residents wear poppies at a higher rate than those born outside of Canada.
To those saying he didn't single out immigrants, he clearly says, "you people, come here, want our bread and honey." If you're looking for specific classification, you're just being ignorant.
He targeted immigrants for zero reason, and saw the consqeunces of it.
You should edit your post to say, "everyone should appreciate the sacrifice," you don't need the "if you move to a country" bullshit. You have just as little information to prove that immigrants don't appreciate our customs and tradition, especially in regards to Remembrance Day than anyone else.
