I can't remember the last time the Rangers re-signed a pending free agent that far ahead of their contract ending.

agreed, no recent precedent
i didn't think they'd go as late as they did with Henrik, but they did

but just maybe, since
(a) Staal is a big piece,
(b) they have high hopes for this season, and
(c) the Hank deal became a distraction,
maybe they break form, as they did with McDonagh

Zuccarello was be extended on January 2nd. I wouldn't be surprised if there isn't a nod, nod, wink, wink deal already in place.

Stepan not until after the season. He's only RFA so not as much urgency.

Staal? You tell me. Let's see how he is playing between now and Christmas and then discuss. Could be reupped, could be traded. Won't walk for nothing though.

don't be so sure of that. Staal very well may be a cap casualty; or Sather will figure a way to maneuver things and Staal will not be. But, if we are sitting here in March with the Rangers fighting for a top spot, and Staal is an integral part, do you trade him? If you do trade him, he's a rental to another team and what do you get in return for a rental? Not a top 4 defenseman who is young and cheap. You get someone(s) young and cheap and picks. So do you potentially derail a return trip to the Finals, or do you just lose the guy for nothing? Again, if guys weren't lost for nothing there would not be an UFAs come July 1. It happens.

What's your definition of a top spot? Because last year we weren't really a contender going by our record (12th in the NHL). But going by fenwick and corsi we were one of the best teams in the league. We could easily post a similar point total while being more of a paper tiger than an actual contender this year.

a spot in which management feels they rather tweak the team to get better and not go the other direction. Last season they went out and rented a player, as opposed to giving out a rental. One can call the position whatever he likes, but it's a position in which you decide to go for it or not. If not, and they're sellers around the deadline, by all means trade him.

Alright, but it's really hard to see them selling if they're in a similar place in the standings, even if the team's actually worse and has little shot at contending. I think they'll probably try to add again at the deadline, despite likely diminishing returns. We need to take a middle ground approach. Staal's really one of those cases where the best course of action may be to play out the season with him and then let him walk.

I heard that Staal would like to go to Carolina, to join his brothers...

didn't say they would be sellers. I can't say today what they will be. Making the case that there is a scenario in which a guy like Staal can walk without any return, which is the scenario you pointed out + not being able to afford him under the cap = he signs elsewhere as a UFA, with which I believe you're agreeing, and I wouldn't argue. Not every UFA-to-be is monetized before he leaves.

its basically keeping that player as a rental for yourself.

Let's not kid ourselves, Zucc is not happy with this one year deal. Actually is very upset with it. He did not do this for the team. I just heard on TSN radio that the Rangers will try to sign Stepan and Stall during the year.

Both players will get north of 6 million on long term deals and they believe both players deserve it. TSN believes Zucc will get a 3-4 year deal around 4 million. Sounds right to me!!

Under the exact same circumstances, the Rangers moved Callahan and would have moved Girardi. Expect the same intractable attitude by the front office if it comes to that.

they moved Callahan for a 30-goal scorer and were able to do so because they "had" two #1 picks to give up. A Staal rental isn't getting a MSL kind of return, and the Rangers don't have the picks, nor do they have depth of youth, to be offering up much more than Staal. So what is the value of a Staal rental? Something less than Staal and thus it would hurt this season's run, if they were in a position to run at that point. So then you say, do you scrap the run and get some youth, or get back some picks to not lose Staal for nothing. Again, as someone else points out, Staal becomes the Rangers' free rental since nothing was given up to acquire him.

I doubt he'll accept that if he has another good season, then his UFA years could be worth 6M on the open market.

Rangers will probably have to give him a Brass-deal, 5M per. Maybe 4.5 if he signs an extension in January.
