Seems like every team coming Toronto has an excessive amount of 'money of the board' and family in the stands.

Does it hurt the team? And more importantly, what can be done to remedy this issue?

I think it had a much larger effect when the team wasn’t very good and we missed the playoffs forever. It always seemed the other teams showed up ready to kick the leafs ass and play the game of their lives.
Now that the leafs have a good structure with strong team play it seems they can weather the storm more often than not, even if the opposing teams seem to get up more to play in Toronto.

The media hurts the team. Just cause it’s always a home coming really doesn’t impact that much

You do see a lot of guys come to Toronto and thrive under the spotlight, often coming home in front of friends and family.

I would like to see the Leafs play up to that big stage mentality more and use home ice as a platform for their own success. Take the mentality that no one's coming in here to upstage the home team, whomever tries is going to have to pay a heavy price. Make it intimidating.

The title of the thread doesn’t have anything to do with what it’s about. What does “hockey Mecca” have to do with anything?

The only thing that hurts this team is this team.
They don’t seem to take lesser teams seriously.

Leafs, heavy price, make it intimidating all in the same sentence. Bwahahahaha

Every jackass “good Ontario boy” or rival team or some nothing team have a chip on their shoulder when they play Toronto for various reasons. They want to impress family, they want to show off in the spotlight, or they just plain don’t like the Leafs. Yes, it is an issue and it’s something our team still fails at preparing for. At this point you should know that teams like Ottawa, Montreal, and Buffalo are going to come in and play balls to the walls because not only are they rivals, they’re shit teams with nothing to play for so this is their “big game.”

The only team the Leafs seem to play hard consistently that we know wants to beat us is the Jets and I’m not sure why. I love the effort the Leafs have played the Jets with since Scheifele’s infamous postgame quote, but why is Winnipeg the only team the Leafs do that with? With the aforementioned teams the Leafs seemingly lose brain cells and fail at every aspect of the game and make critical mistakes.

Voted you're delusional.

The Leafs perform better at home than away. Especially the last two seasons.

How many excuses can we come with for these guys?

The media
The Sit Room
Bettman
The Refs
Dept of Player Safety
The schedule
The playoff format
The "suits"

Now it's the geographic location

1 more and we can rank the Top 10

Salary Cap
Playoff whistles go away, won't let us dipsy doodle
Opposing teams too ornery, contact hurts
Tampa Bay Dmen all 6'2 and bigger, clearly they're doping
Once our goalie gives up a goal, it just makes sense to shut er down and rest up for the next one

The fans.
yea, I called them "suits" in the post

Can't believe I forgot Salary Cap

Our inability to play 3v3, a bargain basement bottom 6 and patchwork goaltending are what hurt our regular season record. Our status as a mecca is just a poor excuse for what are obvious issues. Throw a lack of toughness on there too if you want, or even our gutless pushover coach. Lou steamrolled the country club only for Dubas to build a more exclusive and entitled version with Keefe as their butler/coach.

Good point. There are probably a lot of guys in the NHL who grew up as leafs haters.

If the Leafs keep playing well at home, Ontario boys on other teams might feel a bit tight around the collar and choke a bit too. Pressure to perform in front of family and friends against a superior team. I like it.

As someone who watches the NBA a lot too, this era of the Leafs reminds me a lot of the Boston Celtics with Tatum and Brown (Matthews and Marner being the Leafs version). Those 2 had to go throw a lot of post-season battles against elite players/teams before finally making the finals last year. The regular season is a walk in the park for them too but by virtue of being an iconic franchise, maybe even the iconic franchise in their respective sports, players get up more for those games.

The Leafs will break through at some point, and when they do that door will stay open just like it is for the Celtics.
