The infamous "Curse of the Montreal Canadiens' 1993 Cheating" continues to haunt the league. It all began with the controversial events of Game 2 in the Stanley Cup Finals, when Montreal benefited from an illegal stick penalty on the Kings' Marty McSorley. While some saw it as a clever play, reports later suggested that Canadiens coach Jacques Demers had inside information about which stick to challenge—thanks to a Montreal Forum employee moving the Kings' stick rack into Montreal’s locker room.

Though Demers denied any wrongdoing, this alleged act of cheating has left an unpaid debt, with many feeling that the curse still hangs over Canadian teams to this day.

In 1993, LA won the 1st game in Montreal , were up in the 2nd game , then LA took a penalty , and miraculously Montreal called Marty McSorley for an illegal stick , it had too much curve , Montreal was suspected of "stealing" the stick during a practice so they knew. Montreal won that game and the series (4-1) after that. Some accused them of "cheating", and since then Canada hasn't won the Cup. The "Curse" is just a way of Trolling Canada.

And since LA doesn’t deserve a team, and know nothing about hockey, when we placed the curse we got Canadien and Canadian confused and doomed a country.

There's only 6 teams. You understand this, right?
The odds of no Canadian team winning the Stanley Cup for 31 consecutive seasons is incredibly low, roughly around 0.00024 (or 0.024%). This is a significant mathematical outlier, as one would statistically expect a Canadian team to win the Cup multiple times during that period.

The Leafs have the best shot. They took the cup champs to 7.
Basically Leafs will be the same team without Marner and that defense is not getting any younger. By next years playoffs Tanev will be 36, OEL 34, McCabe 32, and Rielly already looks older and slower.

I think the Leafs are worse next year.

Love it every year!

Montreal will have to remove that 1993 banner.
Kings will have to raise it.

Jacques Demers will have to apologize publicly.

Then, and only then.... will a Canadian team win the cup again.

Literally over half the team is Canadian, we win it every year. Theres no curse. Take the Canadians off the team and see how far they get

A Canadian will NEVER win the Cup again, unfortunately.

Good players don't want to come here and fans will, for the most part, show up regardless of how good the team is so there's less incentive for them to spend too much on top talent.

Sad but true. I'm pretty much just following the Canucks strictly for sentimental purposes at this point.

I still can't believe you guys didnt win it in 2011. That Vancouver team with the Sedin twins and Luongo was such a machine. The powerplay was a work of art. I remember thinking there's no way this team is getting beat by anyone.

I was sure after you went up 2-0 in the finals against Boston that the Canadian drought would end. To me that was still the single best chance at ending it that Canada has ever had.

A couple points here:

American talent has caught up, so you could replace those names with comparable players that happen to come from the US, and the result is the same.

But more importantly, the reason this drought is painful for many is not that no Canadian players ever win. It's that Canadian fans never get to experience a win.

Imagine no US-based team winning the Super Bowl for 32 years.

Ya, that was actually the final that made me truly realize that neither the Canucks, nor any other Canadian team, will ever win the Cup again barring some miracle run.

Not only were they up 2-0, they were up 3-2 and had home ice advantage as well. Statistically their odds of beating Boston were as damn close to 100% as you could probably get.

Some people don't realize this, nor did we know it at the time, but the 1995 lockout is what ended up killing any Canadian teams chances as that was not only when salaries started to skyrocket and the percentage of Canadian teams started to shrink, but also when unrestricted free agency was introduced. So these players now actually have a say to where they did and didn't want to play.

I remember how pissed some fans were when the Raptors won the NBA title and that happened only once. Imagine that happening every year until at least 2052!

American teams definitely have big advantages. But there's also been some luck that Canadian teams have gotten within one win of a cup many times over the past 3 decades and never managed to win one.

This is only true if winning was based solely on chance. It isn't.

Unfortunately, injuries finally caught up with us. Almost every single player in our top six/top four were playing injured or outright gone from the series. Couple that with how well Boston played and we just couldn't overcome both them and said injuries.
