Ott is not a player I want on this team, especially in a defensive shutdown role. You watched what Duchene did to him the other night right?

Boyd Gordon would've been nice. Jay McClement would've been perfect ( :( )

If I were to bet the farm on it:
-Stastny will be resigned for 4-6 @ +/- 5.5 i think. He seems to like what has transpired this year and Roy/Sakic seem to value his presence.
-Avs will package their 1st only for an established "older" player like Ehrhoff or Edler or a young NHL tested player like Kulikov or Josi. Otherwise they will keep it and rely on Siemens and Bigras developing.

"It's a beautiful problem to have," Roy said. "I'd rather deal with this than having no centers. Honestly, it hasn't been a problem so far. Everybody is having their share of ice time. We're very lucky. You look at all the teams at the top of the standings, they all have three very good centers and four good lines. When you build a team, you want to build it (up) the middle."
-Roy

"Whether it's in the back of my mind or not, it's something you can't really worry about," said Stastny, a former University of Denver star. "It's out of your control. If you're part of the solution, then you are. If you're not, you're not. I'm just having fun with this team right now and doing anything I can to help it win."
-Staz (talking about no contract talks yet)

Avs do not necessarily have to trade Stastny for prospects/picks though. I could see several situations where they trade him to a team for a #2 or #3 D man and a third line player.

If it does come down to wanting a bigger role and cash for Stastny, Buffalo makes a ton of sense to trade with for the Avs.

Myers or Ehrhoff would be huge adds for the Avs for Stastny. Maybe get the Sabres to throw in someone like Steve Ott for the playoff push.

Avs Get:
Myers (would be my choice for the long term upside)
Ott

Sabres Get:
Stastny
Elliott
Hishon
Conditional 1st 2015 if Stastny does not re-sign

O'Reilly-Duchene-Downie
Lando-Mac-PAP
McGinn-Mitchell/Ott-Tanguay
McLeod-Ott/Mitchell-Bords

Hejda-Johnson
Benoit-Myers
Wilson-Guenin

Working Barrie and Malone as the depth players.

For the playoffs you probably look to add a 3rd or 4th line center at the deadline to allow thug buddy Bords to sit and run a 4th line of McLeod-Mitchell-Ott if you get the right 3rd line player.

Swap PAP to play with Mac for the speed factor. Tanguay plays on the 3rd line which is asked soak some of the shutdown time. In certain situations, i.e. a close playoff game where the Avs are looking to hold a lead rather than score a goal, you can shift O'Reilly down to the 3rd line for face-offs and pop Tanguay or McGinn up to the 1st line, though I would try to keep the 1st line intact as much as possible.

Myers IMO suffers a bit from the same thing that EJ does/did, trying to live up to unrealistic expectations. Put him on a 2nd pair with Benoit, who seems to be a steadying unspectacular force on the ice, and let him relax. Wilson and Guenin make a solid 3rd unit.

In the offseason the Avs have options. Trade Barrie for a better long term option as the 3rd line center. Re-Sign Ott or Mitchell if they can take the role on over a 2-3 year span. See if Malone develops into the player he can be. Sign a UFA...

All that said, it sucks that Paul is not signed for one more season past this..... I would much rather be facing the choice of keeping him or letting him go after seeing a full season and a half of Mac. He has some growing to do still and I do fear breaking him if you push too hard early.

I don't mean to shoot this down, but in my opinion this is a brutal trade for the Avs. We trade Stastny, our top D prospect, our top forward prospect(tho injury prone) and we have to throw in a first? For Myers who is pretty good, and Ott who is over the hill in my opinion. I'd rather wait til next year and let Bigras, Siemens or Elliot get a fair shot at sticking.

really not excited about paying a 3rd line center 5.5m, no matter who it is

The Avs could get away with it for at least a couple years with MacKinnon on a ELC. The key to it working would be the cap going up, or have some flexibility to trade him if a cap crunch came in 3 years.

Dater has his obligatory Stastny story of the month up on the DP. He just used Roy's quotes from the presser but has a quote from Stastny. (oops, see you guys just posted it)

So reading into it maybe Stastny wants to stay? It's all very vague at this point, I know. Dater also keeps up with his obsession that Mitchell should be moved up to the third line.

I wouldn't call Stastny a third line center, we all know he does more than that.

I wouldn't pay much attention to Dater calling Stastny a third line center considering Dater's a third line sports reporter. Man knows next to nothing about the game.

I don't agree and I think that's WAY too much to give up in the hopes that Myers can find his game again. We all saw him last week, I didn't think much of his play, he had one decent shift where he handled the puck pretty well but that's it.

The whole 'change of scenery' argument that's made holds too much stock. Sure players can benefit (James Neal / Jamie McGinn) but I'm not sure you want to end up on the other side of those types of trades. I think trading for Myers there's a good chance that's what we'd be doing. (ending up on the wrong side of the trade)

You gotta have some foresight. I see Stastny settling into a Stoll+ type of role with the Avs (if he wants it). In 4 years, when the cap is at or close to 80m, that kind of $$ will be just fine against our cap.

IMO the change of scenery only really works when a player either is finally going to get a chance to succeed or is disgruntled. Myers doesn't seem to be either of these things. Now I would be willing to take a chance on him, but not at a great cost. I'd rather have Ehrhoff who is night and day better and has at least 5-6 good years left in him.

I am at the point to which I want nothing to do with Tyler Myers. He is lost without a paddle in his own zone, and his offense isn't good enough to rectify it. Add in an awful contract, and I would stay far, far away. I'm not sure he's going to get back into form.

Buffalo 09-10 was a weird team. They made the playoffs with 100 points lead by semi-bums like Connelly (65P) and Roy (69P). Vanek had an off-year with 53 points and then Myers who put up insane amounts of points.

Miller having his best season in the league was the key I guess.

Thus confirming that Roy will in fact sign Stastny :sarcasm:

But seriously, is this Roy's decision? What is Sherman's job?

I think it is Roy and Sakic's decision. Sherman is pretty much an accountant.

It would all depend on the cost with me. Anything that Buffalo would accept, I probably wouldn't be game for, but if the cost was say... Wilson + 3rd I don't see how you couldn't take that risk.

I tried to explain the Av's hockey decision making tree to my wife when she asked about Sherman the other night and she thought we should give them one of those stupid combination names like Patkic.

I think Myers has passed that "point of no return". Let me just say that he is still young and I have watched Buffalo quite a bit this season. IMO He is conducting bad habits that an incompetent coaching staff doesn't know in their own regard.

He is,
- Soft: to a certain point of their careers you can change him, but I honestly do not see him becoming a tougher player.
- PPQB: This area was the place which I was the most disappointed in his game. He has all the potential to become a solid QB on the PP, but thus far no result.
- Complex: Especially in the defensive zone, he is trying to do too much with the puck and is completely failing at it. This part is teachable at any time, but will take time. But it will be harder to teach once he is further on his career.

Soft can be dealt with. It is disappointing, but there are plenty of soft defensemen that do well. I think he really just needs a really good coach that will tear him down and build him up around his strengths. Most of all in that, don't try to turn him into something he is not. That has been Buffalo's biggest mistake... they have tried to change him into a physical, giant #1 defensemen in the mold of Chara. Myers will never be that sort of player.

The biggest issue with Myers is his contract cap hit (not even his salary at this point). If his cap hit was 4.0m instead of 5.5, people would be a lot easier on him. Going forward with the cap that might be less of a problem, but right now 5.5m says that you should be at least a #2D and possibly a low end #1. Myers is neither at this point and that is why he gets a lot of grief (it doesn't help that he doesn't look close either). If he played a smaller and more defined role he would be a better player. Over time he might develop into the #2, but it is going to take a lot of coaching and a team that is willing to be patient.

Much as I like Dater, his views on Stastny are 100% wrong. No matter how many times guys like Jibblescribbits try to correct him, he just gets more militant about it.

Hey, if Stazz wants to stay and will sign for a reasonable $$$, I don't see why not. But I won't hold anything against him if he decides to test the open market. I just hope the Avs come to a decision regarding that before the trade deadline.

I think a lot of this comes down to Ryan O'Reilly. So far I haven't heard a thing one way or the other about a contract extension, and I think that goes a long way toward deciding Stastny's fate as well.

They can't wait and see what happens with O'Reilly. I'd be SHOCKED if O'Reilly signs anything before late summer even if talks are completely amicable. That agency uses time as one of their best assets.

One year ago I wanted ROR to be traded and I was ready to see him traded and was pretty much 100% sure he was gone as well, but at this point I have to admit I was wrong and It would have been huge mistake to trade ROR! This guy is so good for this team. Defensively one of the best in NHL. This guy will win cup with this team, we must keep him.
