This one's for @francis246 since he enjoys my posts so much. His agent saying he doesn't want to be the highest paid Leaf.
Marners team is certainly digging their feet in for a 4 year contract like Matthews got. He was rumored to have settled on 6 years last contract but wanted less term (like Matthews received).
Pure greed.
Brayden Point and Marner both were up for a new contract in 2019. Marner has made about 17 million more than Point over the past 5 years. Marner is rumored to probably get around 12 million.
So that would be another 12 extra million more than Point over Points full contract.
So Marner will have made 29 million more than Point at the end of Points 8 year contract. That's not good enough for Marner... he wants to a 4 year contract so the difference between him and Point could 33 million or more.
Ridiculous, greedy and definitely not a player who cares about winning a cup.
Matthews is no better....but you got to pick one and Marner definitely doesn't have the clout Matthews has.
Draisaitl, Mcdavid, Mackinnon are okay with 8 year contracts.
Not our guys.
Take a hike Marner.
Marner is a player you sign if you want playoff appearances, but not if you want to win a cup.
It was shown a couple years ago that no team with a player with 10 million has ever won the cup.
Does @francis246 know of a team whose allocated 14-15% cap hits to two players that have won stanley cups?
Let's hear it. If we sign Marner and Matthews to 4 year contracts around 14-15% we are statistically unlikely to ever win a cup. This isn't even bringing the fact that Marner is maybe the worst "star player" in physical games. So bad, that his biggest supporters, coach Cooper, demoted him to 3rd line and admitted that he is underskilled compares to his peers. Additionally Team Canada A. Coach Rick Tochett admitted that the reason he was demoted was the team wanted less perimeter play lol.
