Does Mitch seem different since coming back from the 4 Nations?

Two way street. Whenever two other players of these apparent caliber are on a team, they record 120+ points with ease. Matthews has scored more goals per 60 without Marner on his line over the last two full seasons. Both Marner and Matthews struggle to produce much more than 100 points.

The math doesn't work here. Someone isn't pulling there 11+ million dollar weight.
It seems obvious who is and who isn't playing to their salary this year, don't you think?

Marner is 23rd in the league in 5v5 points per 60 and continues to drop. Marner is 265th in 5v5 goals/60.

Matthews despite injury and a terrible year, is still 20th in the league in 5v4 points.

23rd overall 5v5 and 265th in g/60 playing primarily with 13.25 million dollar Matthews.

Personally, I wouldn't make him the top 3 paid player he wants to be. We are seeing how affective Rantanen is when he isn't surround by Makar and Mackinnon.

You really need to drop the per 60 nonsense unless you have a formula for when Marner is out there to shut down other teams best players. It skews everything. per 60 is a stat that you use as the be all end all but most other players in the top 20 for offense don't play the same shutdown mins Marner does. Anytime you say 5v5 per 60 it contributes nothing to actual on ice performance when it pertains to Marner.

He’s injured though shouldn’t that be clear n I was genuinely asking a question
I'm not convinced Matthews can ever be healed, the Matthews we have here today is the same Matthews we had last playoff and all season so far, this very well may be who he is going forward.

Sounds like Marner might want a short term contract, similar to Matthews. Like Marner reportedly wanted last time and didn't get and ultimately settled for 6 years.

Matthews got another 3 years this past contract, meanwhile he did 4 last time. For a total of 7 years.

So while a player like Eichel signed for 8 years at 10 million. Matthews will be on his 3rd contract before Eichel hits the same 8th year. Matthews by that time could hit 16 million per year for the 8th year or even more. Which would mean he would make about 12 million more than Eichel over the 8 years. If it weren't for COVID that number would be much more substantial.

Leafs cannot sign Marner to 3 years...if they did, it would be an admittal they are just here to sell jerseys..because they would be dead in the water based on remaining cap compared to other teams in win now mode. Signing Marner to a three year deal, like Matthews would mean they are up for new contracts again in 2 and 3 years and both in the 16 million range each.

In that case they'd make around 32 million while Barkov and M.Tkatchuk make 19.5 for 2-3 full seasons!

There would be a 64% discrepancy and 12.5 million dollar difference between Marner/Matthews and Tkatchuk/Barkov for 3 seasons.

Leafs would be paying Marner and Matthews substantially more than there comparables in age and skill and at putting them at a significant disadvantage with the cap.

Remember when Dougie Hamilton complained that his team (Carolina) was beat by a team 18 million over the cap (Kucherov IR)?

We'd be doing the same to ourselves...God forbid if we hit a team skirting the system on IR too! Lol.

Leafs are already at a disadvantage in that they need to pay more money because of higher taxes (thats why im told by certain marner supporters). However, looks like leafs are the only one lol. Winnipeg is getting reasonable contracts to their top players.

Yes. He seemed different in that last final game too.

Mario was in the great Canada Cup of 1987, we will never witness skill like that again on both Canada and Russias side. He went there with a giddy approach, calm and cool, just dominating as he always does while Gretzky was laser focused on winning. It is said, I think even Mario has admitted it, that being around Wayne taught him alot about how much the game meant to him and so many others. To his country. Mario wins back to back Cups and came back from back injuries and cancer. A warrior that didn't exist it seems just a few years earlier.

Perhaps Marner understands that he may not find happiness in Toronto unless they win a Cup.

Also apparently he has a kid on the way (or born, I don't know I just saw a headline). That makes one a man real quick. Consider that Cooper said "that kid has alot of skill" or something when referring to Marner.

He is no longer a kid. He must take the step to be a man. A man is accountable and honest. Get it done in this years playoffs or fly to another nest. There are at least two others I would suggest the same advice.

I'd love to be wrong. I would post on here a lengthy apology for doubting Shanny and his lot of happy losers. It would be the most enjoyable apology.

Win the Cup. That's it.

Would be great if the tournament is a blessing in disguise for this team.
Leafs in general have been scoring alot of goals around the net. Maybe in order to buy into former enforcer Berubes two to net menality and dirty goals...they needed to see superstar players Mackinnon, Crosby and Mcdavid standing in the goalies crease after every shot like a bunch of vultures waiting for an easy meal.
