Happened to Marchand after 2016. He said he looked at himself as an elite player after the World Cup of hockey. His stats show this

I believe he has looked more confident, now we just need to see him carry that thru to the playoffs.

Yes, he's looked different to me. On and off the ice. My hope is that the difference is a desire to win. Being around that Canadian roster full of guys with a team-first winning mentality might have sparked something.

No, pretending he’s different after three games (and two quiet ones) is just the other side of the “what have you done for me lately?” thing that Leafs fans and hfboards people do.
I hope he has learned, I hope he remembers what it feels like to win and what it takes.

One or two bad plays doesn't define a player any more than one or two good ones.
That being said I reserve my judgement on the OP as the sample size is way too small. I am hopeful though.

I said he would be gassed this past weekend, he was, serviceable, but he had little emotional energy. Expected. So anyone saying he looks different on the ice is just making things up. As far as off the ice, his interviews look the same to me, maybe people hate him less so they’re not as hostile. He still says “great” eight thousand times, he’s no more relaxed, he’s Mitch.
What we hope is different, when the games gets tighter and mean more he can draw on his success and find the poise he showed at the Four Nations. Being around the best in the world, and standing out, can’t hurt a guy….

I don't see much of a difference due to the four nations, he's seemed like a more mature player all year, probably more down to age more than anything.

True, but he's been making those plays since he joined the league so for Mitch it's a LOT more than "one or two".
He really needs to cut that out of his game because we've all seen that when it doesn't work the puck usually ends up in the Toronto net. Forgivable late in the 3rd during a West Coast blowout in Mid-November against the Sharks or Ducks but a back-breaker in game 6 or 7 of a playoff series.

He is exactly the same. He was doing a lot of great things before the tournament. He even had a hat trick so I don't really get this does he look different.
He has looked good all season minus the high risk gaffes.
What remains to be seen is can he compete in elimination games in a hard playoff series. Can he work with the rest of the core to get us to an ECF or better? ECF is the benchmark, happened like 3 times with Sundin. This core is supposed to be far superior and has done nothing.

I've always said Marner is great when he has space to move and others generally need to create that space for him.
He has 2 goals in 3 games since returning from 4 nations. Both were not 5v5, one was 5v4 PP and the other 3v3 OT. Both plays, Matthews made spectacular plays to give Marner room. People really underestimating just how good Matthews is.
Goal 1:
On the PP...Matthews stick lifted and physically checked a Bruins player, allowing Marner to pick up a Tavares pass and walk into the goalie on a 2v1 with Nylander, with the Bruin defender standing still trying to defend the 2v1 in tight (and opted to defend Nylanders shot).

On the 3v3 OT, Marner jumped the zone all alone, relying on Matthews to win the 50/5] battle to a loose puck and sending Marner on a breakaway.
The real question is why isn't the best playmaker in the league (apparently), Marner, setting up any of these types of plays for Matthews? Why is Matthews struggling to score off Marner passes? Nylander set up a literal tap in for Tavares a couple games ago...why aren't we seeing Marner do the same?
Marner has a total of 4 points in his last 7 games.

Let's settle down a bit.

Pretty much. Nothing has changed. He is making some clutch plays and getting noticed. If he can do it without time and space in a hard fought playoff series we are good.
So, the $13M dollar man needs Marner - the guy you want to get rid of, to score, sounds like a fool proof plan. Nothing is ever Matthews fault, only Marner is too blame.

Exactly, in 2019 Berkshire said it on Sportsnet. He said Marner is overrated 5v5 and not overrated with the man advantage. He showed how 5v5 Marner ranked very low in goal generating offensive plays...while his teammates, Matthews, Tavares and Nylander ranked significantly higher. It's precisely what we are still seeing. Marner is a black hole in 5v5 goal generating plays.
Both plays yesterday Marner relied on Matthews to create space and the scoring chance.
Play 1- Matthews opened up a 2v1 for Marner on the 5v5 pp.
3v3 Marner was already sprinting to center ice (jumping the zone) when Matthews was going for a 50/50 puck battle with the bruin lol. See marner in top corner of picture (no bruin is behind him).

Impossible to find fault with his play this season, he's been excellent, certainly the best forward by a decent margin.
Two way street. Whenever two other players of these apparent caliber are on a team, they record 120+ points with ease. Both Marner and Matthews struggle to produce much more than 100 points.
The math doesn't work here. Someone isn't pulling there 11+ million dollar weight.
Over the 2 seasons prior to this, Marner and Matthews played about 50% together and apart.
Matthews scored more goals per 60 without Marner on his line over that time. His p/60 generally was unaffected whether he played with Marner or not.
Meanwhile, Marner in that time, goes from a 3-3.5 p/60 with Matthews down to 2.5 range without Matthews. Pretty significantly effected by playing without Matthews.
This hear Matthews is struggling mightily, while playing 90% with Marner.
Just going by what the stats indicate.
